Hybrid Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of a single clay layer and a donor-(π-electron system)-acceptor (Dδ-π-Aδ−) zwitterionic molecule (ind-TCNQ), prepared from 1,3,3-trimethyl-2-methyleneindoline (donor) and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (acceptor) were prepared. The characteristics of the electrostatic interaction between the clay layer and the ind-TCNQ molecules were investigated. The amount of ind-TCNQ molecules spread onto the air-water interface was increased systematically so that mono- and multi-layers of the molecules could be formed on the clay layer. The hybrid LB films, which were deposited onto a solid substrate, were characterized by means of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and optical second-harmonic generation measurement. The amount of ind-TCNQ molecules adsorbed on the clay layer increased with an increase in the amount of ind-TCNQ molecules spread onto the air-water interface. On the other hand, the SHG intensities of the films did not change with the change in amount of ind-TCNQ spread. The results indicate that the electrostatic interaction between the clay layer and the ind-TCNQ molecules operates only in the region where the ind-TCNQ molecules are in direct contact with the clay layer.

Second-harmonic generation of the relativistic self-focused chirped laser pulse in plasma has been studied with the exponential plasma density ramp profile in the presence of a planar magnetostatic wiggler. It is evident that the exponential plasma density ramp is helpful in enhancing second-harmonic generation as, with the introduction of the exponential plasma density ramp, self-focusing becomes stronger and hence, it leads to enhance the harmonic generation of the second order in the plasma. Also, it is observed that the efficiency of second-harmonic generation enhances significantly with an increase in the value of the chirp parameter. Further, the magnetostatic wiggler helps in enhancing the harmonic generation of the second order. This is due to the fact that dynamics of the oscillating electrons is altered due to the Lorentz force which, in turn, modifies the plasma wave and, hence, results in the efficient second-harmonic generation.

A s-polarized short-pulse laser impinged obliquely on an overdense plasma slab is shown to produce very significant second harmonic in the direction of specular reflection and transmission. The laser induces a non-linear current on electrons, which is curl free. However, with sharp plasma boundary, it gives rise to electromagnetic radiation at the second harmonic. Our formalism includes multiple reflections of the incident and second-harmonic waves from both the front and rear surfaces. The present work includes finiteness of the slab. The normalized second-harmonic amplitude acquires a sharp peak at some specific angle of incidence for a particular set of parameters dependent on thickness of the slab and plasma density.

Second-harmonic generation by an obliquely incident s-polarized laser from an underdense plasma in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated analytically. An expression for the relativistic factor γ has been obtained in the presence of magnetic field. The efficiency of second-harmonic radiation η has been obtained as a function of angle of incidence θ, normalized electric field amplitude of laser beam a0, normalized electron density ${\rm \omega} _{\rm p}^2 /{{\rm \omega} ^2}$, and magnetic field b. It is observed that γ increases with b. In turn, the conversion efficiency decreases with an increase in b. It is seen that the conversion efficiency is affected by the magnetic field due to the modified relativistic factor. In the absence of magnetic field, η increases with a0 and θ. However, in the presence of magnetic field, the conversion efficiency starts decreasing as the magnetic field is increased.

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) can be used for imaging membrane potential in neurons, but poor signal-to-noise (S/N) limits accurate measurements of small voltage transients. We use photon counting to improve the S/N of weak SHG signal detection. Photon counting generates shot-noise limited and integrable signals, eliminates pulse-to-pulse variation, and built-in discriminators reduces the background to practically zero. In single trials, by using photon counting, we obtain a more than a twofold S/N increase over analog voltage detection. Trial-to-trial variability is also reduced by 50%. Finally, we show that, using photon counting, the kinetics of fast events such as action potentials can be recorded more accurately.
