We compare the solutions of two Poisson problems in a spherical shell with Robin boundary conditions, one with given data, and one where the data have been cap symmetrized. When the Robin parameters are nonnegative, we show that the solution to the symmetrized problem has larger convex means. Sending one of the Robin parameters to $+\infty $ , we obtain mixed Robin/Dirichlet comparison results in shells. We prove similar results on balls and prove a comparison principle on generalized cylinders with mixed Robin/Neumann boundary conditions.

We give an equality condition for a symmetrization inequality for condensers proved by F.W. Gehring regarding elliptic areas. We then use this to obtain a monotonicity result involving the elliptic area of the image of a holomorphic function f.

For holomorphic functions $f$ in the unit disk $ \mathbb{D} $ with $f(0)= 0$, we prove a modulus growth bound involving the logarithmic capacity (transfinite diameter) of the image. We show that the pertinent extremal functions map the unit disk conformally onto the interior of an ellipse. We prove a modulus growth bound for elliptically schlicht functions in terms of the elliptic capacity ${\mathrm{d} }_{\mathrm{e} } f( \mathbb{D} )$ of the image. We also show that the function ${\mathrm{d} }_{\mathrm{e} } f(r \mathbb{D} )/ r$ is increasing for $0\lt r\lt 1$.

The empirical measure Pn for independent sampling on a distribution P is formed by placing mass n−1 at each of the first n sample points. In this paper, n½(Pn − P) is regarded as a stochastic process indexed by a family of square integrable functions. A functional central limit theorem is proved for this process. The statement of this theorem involves a new form of combinatorial entropy, definable for classes of square integrable functions.
