Effects of proso millet interference with irrigated dry beans were evaluated in Nebraska over a 2-yr period. Dry bean yield reduction ranged from 12 to 31% from a wild proso millet density of 10 plants m-2. As density increased, dry bean yield reduction could be predicted with a rectangular hyperbola regression model. Ten wild proso millet plants m-2 growing with dry beans produced 14 780 to 21 420 seed m-2. Dry bean yields were reduced 41 and 11% in 1990 and 1991, respectively, when wild proso millet removal was delayed 6 wk after dry bean planting. Four weeks of weed-free maintenance were sufficient to provide dry bean yields comparable to plots kept weed free all season.

Jointed goatgrass is a serious weed in winter wheat, and presently no herbicides are available for its selective control. This study examined the effect of time of emergence and removal on jointed goatgrass interference in winter wheat, as well as its rate of development and soil water extraction. The goal of this study was to suggest cultural practices that minimize jointed goatgrass interference in winter wheat. Jointed goatgrass development was identical to ‘Vona’ winter wheat in two crop seasons, even though precipitation differed drastically between seasons. Depth of soil water extraction of both species was also similar. Jointed goatgrass at 18 plants m−2 reduced grain yield 27 and 17% when emerging 0 and 42 d after Vona, respectively. The relationship between time of jointed goatgrass emergence after winter wheat and grain yield loss was Y = 30.6–0.29X (X = days, r = 0.72), indicating that plants emerging in late fall still caused yield loss. Removing jointed goatgrass by early March prevented winter wheat grain yield loss. The interference data suggests that producers assess infestation levels and plan control measures in early March.

Two series of experiments were conducted from 1976 through 1978 on Marvyn loamy sand in central Alabama to determine the competitive relationship of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) with cotton (Gossypium hirustum L. ‘Stoneville 213’). In the first series of experiments yellow nutsedge was left undisturbed or removed from plots to give periods of competition of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 25 weeks. Seed cotton yield was reduced 2 of 3 yr with full season (25 week) competition, but was unaffected by shorter periods of competition in all years. Main stem diameter of cotton was also reduced 2 of 3 yr when competing full season while main stem height was reduced in only 1 of 3 yr with full season competition. In the second series of experiments yellow nutsedge densities were monitored in 48 individual plots and regression analysis showed yields of seed cotton were consistently reduced with full-season competition. Yellow nutsedge shoot densities ranged from zero to 93 shoots/m2 (measured 13 cm on either side of the drill) and approximately 18 kg/ha of seed cotton were lost for each additional yellow nutsedge plant per m2.

Effects of wild proso millet interference with irrigated corn were evaluated in Nebraska and Colorado over a 2-yr period. Corn yield reductions ranged from 13 to 22% from a wild proso millet density of 10 plants m–2. As density increased, corn yield reduction could be predicted with a rectangular hyperbola regression model. Ten wild proso millet plants m–2 growing with corn produced 4200 to 6200 seed m–2. Corn yields were reduced 10% at one location if wild proso millet removal was delayed 2 weeks after corn planting. If removal was further delayed until 6 weeks after corn planting, corn yield reductions at the two locations ranged from 16 to 28%.

Field research trials were conducted in Idaho at the Aberdeen Research and Extension Center in 2006 and 2007 to determine the critical interference period of hairy nightshade in potatoes. ‘Russet Norkotah’ variety was planted both years in plots three rows wide by 12 m long. When the potatoes had emerged, one- to two-leaf hairy nightshade plants that had been germinated and grown in the greenhouse were transplanted at a 2 m−1 row density and allowed to grow for 10, 20, 30, or 40 d after emergence (DAE) before removal, or the potatoes were maintained weed-free for 0, 10, 20, 30, or 40 DAE before transplanting. Potatoes were harvested from the center row at the end of each growing season and yield and grade was determined. Russet Norkotah is a small-canopied potato variety and often does not completely close canopy in Idaho. Russet Norkotah U.S. No. 1 and total tuber yield were similar to weed-free yield when hairy nightshade transplanting was delayed up to 22 or 24 DAE, respectively, or planted at emergence and allowed to remain for only 6 or 11 d, respectively. Otherwise, yield decrease was 5% or greater. Therefore, the critical weed-free period for Russet Norkotah potato U.S. No. 1 or total tuber yields was 6 to 22 or 11 to 24 DAE, respectively.

The critical period of weed control is the portion of the life cycle of a crop during which it must be kept weed-free to prevent yield loss due to weed interference. The advent of herbicide-resistant canola (Brassica napus L.) varieties in western Canada has meant that there are now more options for postemergence weed control in canola, and this has prompted increased interest in identifying the optimum timing for weed control in this crop. A critical period experiment was conducted at three locations in southern Manitoba in 1998 and 1999, and it consisted of two sets of treatments. In the first set of treatments, the crop was kept weed-free for increasing lengths of time to determine when emerging weeds would no longer reduce crop yield. In the second set of treatments, weeds were permitted to grow in the crop for increasing lengths of time to determine when weeds emerging with the crop began irrevocably to reduce crop yield. Results of the experiments indicated that canola must be kept weed-free in most cases until the four-leaf stage of the crop (17–38 days after crop emergence [DAE]) and, in one early-seeded experiment, until the six-leaf stage of the crop (41 DAE), in order to prevent >10% yield loss. After the four- to six-leaf stage of the canola crop, few weeds emerged, and late-emerging weeds accumulated little shoot biomass. Weeds needed to be removed by the four-leaf stage of the crop (17–38 DAE) to prevent >10% yield loss due to weed interference. In all but the early-seeded experiment, the critical weed-free period and the critical time of weed removal overlapped, such that a single weed removal at the four-leaf stage of the crop would have been sufficient to prevent >10% yield loss. This information will be useful for providing weed control recommendations to canola producers.

Field research was conducted near Saint Joseph, LA, in 2008 and 2009 to evaluate Texasweed interference in drill-seeded rice. Season-long Texasweed interference at 1 plant m−2 was estimated to cause 5% yield loss. Yield loss from 10 and 50 plants m−2 was 31 and 61%, respectively. Yield loss was primarily due to a reduction in effective tillers per square meter. Thousand-grain weight of rice was not affected by season-long Texasweed interference. Path analysis indicated yield component compensation, i.e., a reduction in effective tillers per square meter probably caused an increase in grains per panicle. However, that effect was not strong enough to reverse the detrimental effect of reduced effective tillers per square meter on rice yield. The critical period of Texasweed interference to cause more than 5% yield loss was estimated to be between 0 and 6 wk after rice emergence.

Volunteer potato can be a host of serious pest problems in potato and could provide a source of inoculum for subsequent potato crops. Volunteer potato can also be difficult to control in many rotational crops. Potato shoots were removed once, twice, and throughout the growing season, beginning at early and late tuberization. Compared with no shoot removal, two or more shoot removal treatments reduced the number of tubers 42% or more. A single shoot removal treatment at early tuberization reduced tuber biomass 37%, compared with 65% when shoot removal was initiated several weeks later. Regardless of timing, a single shoot removal increased the number and biomass of small tubers (≤ 57 g each). Control tactics that remove or kill volunteer potato shoots require repeated application or integration with other management practices to suppress the weed.
