While digital technologies have induced profound global transformations, political scientists often lack the analytical tools to grasp their effects on politics. In particular, digitization's impact on dictatorships remains not only empirically understudied, but seriously under-conceptualized. How do new technological possibilities affect autocratic politics? This contribution starts from the inner logic of authoritarianism rather than from technical innovation. It first maps the ways in which autocrats employ various digital technologies to maintain power. This helps us identify seven core areas where dictatorial politics are transformed by the use of new tools. We delineate the key characteristics of these areas of change and conclude that, in their sum, technologically induced transformations significantly alter the nature of dictatorship if and when it is digitized.

Resilience is a cross-disciplinary concept that is relevant for understanding the sustainability of the social and environmental conditions in which we live. Most research normatively focuses on building or strengthening resilience, despite growing recognition of the importance of breaking the resilience of, and thus transforming, unsustainable social-ecological systems. Undesirable resilience (cf. lock-ins, social-ecological traps), however, is not only less explored in the academic literature, but its understanding is also more fragmented across different disciplines. This disparity can inhibit collaboration among researchers exploring interdependent challenges in sustainability sciences. In this article, we propose that the term lock-in may contribute to a common understanding of undesirable resilience across scientific fields.

It is no longer possible nor desirable to address the dual challenges of equity and sustainability separately. Instead, they require new thinking and approaches which recognize their interlinkages, as well as the multiple perspectives and dimensions involved. We illustrate how equity and sustainability are intertwined, and how a complex social–ecological systems lens brings together advances from across the social and natural sciences to show how (in)equity and (un)sustainability are produced by the interactions and dynamics of coupled social–ecological systems. This should help understand which possible pathways could lead to sustainable and fair futures.

Deontic meanings have frequently been considered in relation to epistemic meanings and the present paper introduces a novel framework for investigating this relationship. The paper first introduces the basic ideas in Deictic Space Theory (DST), illustrating the geometrical elements involved with respect to counterfactual conceptualisations. This framework is then used to explore deontic conceptualisations in relation to epistemic conceptualisations. Following the implications of the geometrical structure logic of DST, epistemic concepts are taken as fundamental and as presupposed in deontic meanings. It is argued that counterfactuality, which can be modelled as a geometrical reflection transformation, is crucial to the modelling of the conceptual space of obligation concepts expressed in English modal verbs. It is further argued that a second-order reflection transformation can model permission concepts. Deontic ‘force’ is modelled in a natural way as force vectors, an already assumed ingredient of DST's geometrical framework. Finally the paper considers ways in which this framework does and does not run counter to existing claims about deontic and epistemic meaning in Cognitive Semantics.

For many years there has been an underlying pathology within the literature about families with children and adults with intellectual disabilities (Helff & Glidden, 1998). This literature has emphasized stress and burden, incapacity and dependency, leading to negative stereotyping of families in this context. Over the last 2 decades research has led to some important reconceptualizations of how families approach their caring, affording an improved understanding of how they deploy strengths and resources, and who benefits. This paper reviews this thinking, arguing that it provides a suitable context for understanding the scope and form of family caregiving contributions that are less visible, and therefore less recognized. An attempt is therefore made to chart invisible contributions. It is suggested that invisible contributions have implications for thinking about human and social capital (Putnam, 2000) as well as for practice in supporting families.

When can one find a smooth transformation of a random variable so that the transformed random variable has a specified distribution? If the random variable is continuous, the solution is elementary; if it is discrete, it may be impossible. In this paper, a simple method is given of transforming a random variable in a smooth way to match a specified number of quantiles of an arbitrary distribution. The problem arose from a request for a simple way of transforming marks given in school assessment so that the distribution of transformed marks matches the distribution of external assessment.

This Chapter describes methods for defining the level of damage from an event, its impact on the functional status of the affected society, and for identifying the needs that result from the damage. The event may produce damage to the population (injuries, death), its constructions and societal functions, and/or to the environment. Societal functions are described as production functions with inputs, transformations, consumption of resources, and outputs. Distinction between available supplies, requirements, and needs is stressed. The differences between damage assessments and needs assessments are described. Needs for goods and services that are greater than the available level of supplies produces deficits. The concept of thresholds of available resources required to maintain the pre-event functional state, those necessary to sustain basic functional states, and those required for survival is developed. Surplus of available supplies is subdivided into those needed for contingencies and those that comprise luxuries. Indicators are required that define either the level of function or the level of available supplies.Distribution of available supplies (who receives them) impacts whether critical and functional requirements of a population, or part of the affected population, are satisfied.When critical requirements are not met, the crude mortality rate increases. Severity scoring of the damage sustained and the effects of responses is described. All damage and needs assessments and responses to them relate to the pre-event state of the affected society, and the objective of disaster responses is to return the affected society to its pre-event functional state.

It is shown that the stationary, autoregressive, Markovian minification processes introduced by Tavares and Sim can be extended to give processes with marginal distributions other than the exponential and Weibull distributions. Necessary and sufficient conditions on the hazard rate of the marginal distributions are given for a minification process to exist. Results are given for the derivation of the autocorrelation function; these correct the expression for the Weibull given by Sim. Monotonic transformations of the minification processes are also discussed and generate a whole new class of autoregressive processes with fixed marginal distributions. Stationary processes generated by a maximum operation are also introduced and a comparison of three different Markovian processes with uniform marginal distributions is given.

Six transformations viz., , log[log (x + 2)] and log[log (x + k )] were tested for their efficiency in stabilizing variance of Coccus viridis (Green) population counts which followed negative binomial distribution. Only log[log(x + 2)] transformation was found effective in stabilizing variance. This is a new transformation proposed by the authors.

A transformation is introduced to stabilize the variance of the largest value in a sample from a normal distribution. The transformed distribution is found to approximate closely to the limiting Gumbel form for all sample sizes. The practical implications of the result are discussed.
