The fatigue behavior of a low-cost Zr52.1Ti5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Y0.4 (at%) (ZrCuNi-based) bulk-metallic glass (BMG) prepared by industrial-grade material was investigated under three-point bending loading modes. In order to obtain the fatigue stress-life (S-N) data, stress-controlled experiments were conducted using a computer-controlled material test system electrohydraulic testing machine at 60 Hz with a 0.1 R ratio in the air at room temperature. The fatigue limit (~174 MPa) in stress amplitude and fatigue ratio (~0.14) of this BMG is comparative to the similar BMG (Vit-105) prepared by high pure raw materials. The crack initiated from inclusions near the rectangular corners at the outer surface of the rectangular beam due to stress concentration. The striations and vein-like patterns were observed in the crack propagation region and fast fracture region, respectively.

Natural metamict mineral found as large (1-3 cm in size) homogeneous grains (as assumed, former single crystals), was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (pXRD), high-temperature pXRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). The average chemical composition obtained by EMPA is (wt. %): Nb2O5 – 42.6; Ta2O5 – 4.4; TiO2 – 9.2; UO3 – 4.4; ThO2 – 1.0; MnO – 1.3; FeO – 19.4; Y2O3 – 16.6.

The untreated (original) sample is X-ray amorphous. The sample remained amorphous after annealing at 400 °C for 1 hour. The sample became almost fully crystalline after annealing at 700 °C for 1 hour with an X-ray diffraction pattern similar to that of Fe-columbite (ICCD: 01-074-7356). Further annealing at 1000 °C and higher temperatures caused changes in the phase composition of the sample. It was proposed that under self-irradiation a single-phase U-Th-bearing solid solution, based on monocrystalline Y-niobate, became metamict but remained homogeneous without evidence of solid solution destruction. However, this metamict solid solution is unstable under thermal treatment and recrystallization.

Yttrium titanate belongs to a family of compounds called pyrochlores with significant properties such as ionic conduction, optical non-linearity and radiation tolerance that have resulted in applications thermal barrier coatings, high-permittivity dielectrics, and materials for safe disposal of actinide-containing nuclear waste, and hydrogen storage material. The application of these materials in ODS ferritic steels, photocatalytic water splitting and a more efficient host material than TiO2 for Er3+ luminescence have been evaluated. ErxY2-xTi2O7 has tremendous applications in fiber amplifiers, integrated optical devices and selective emitters for thermophotovoltaic applications. Since 1-D nanostructures are deemed to be important building blocks for future optical and optoelectronic nanodevices, we have used electrospinning methods to synthesize nanofibers and freestanding, non-woven nanofibers membranes of single phase yttrium titanate and ErxY2-xTi2O7 (Er/(Ti+Er) at. ratio= 0 -15 %) with diameters less than 150 nm and have characterized the physical, thermal and optical properties of these nanofibers.

Multiferroics, the study of materials which possess ferromagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in a single phase, has become an area of prominent research. Moreover, this behavior has been extensively studied in materials which possess a perovskite crystal structure such as BiFeO3 and YMnO3. Due to their weak saturation magnetic moment, many rare-earth orthoferrites are currently of extreme interest. Utilizing a solid-state reaction between Y2O3 and Fe2O3 we have developed the rare-earth orthoferrite YFeO3 and conducted a bulk material study to determine this material’s availability for thin film multiferroic research. The absence of Y2O3 and Fe2O3 impurities was confirmed using Copper-Kα XRD. Examination of the dependence of the magnetization M on the temperature T was conducted to determine the reliability of multiferroic behavior across varying temperatures in conjunction with the investigation of the dependence of M on the electric field strength H. Results clearly display ferromagnetic behavior in our bulk material, providing ample evidence that our bulk material is an excellent candidate for thin film studies. Future studies on multiferroic YFeO3 thin films grown via pulsed laser deposition on Lanthanum Aluminate substrates will be conducted. Detailed data will be provided via XRD and SQUID to confirm magnetic properties while impurities are non-existent in our thin films.

Yttria-stabilized zirconia’s high oxygen diffusivity and corresponding high ionic conductivity, and its structural stability over a broad range of temperatures, have made the material of interest for use in a number of applications, for example, as solid electrolytes in fuel cells. At low concentrations, the stabilizing yttria also serves to increase the oxygen diffusivity through the presence of corresponding oxygen vacancies, needed to maintain charge neutrality. At higher yttria concentration, however, diffusivity is impeded by the larger number of relatively high energy migration barriers associated with yttrium cations. In addition, there is evidence that oxygen vacancies preferentially occupy nearest-neighbor sites around either dopant or Zr cations, further affecting vacancy diffusion. We present the results of ab initio calculations that indicate that it is energetically favorable for oxygen vacancies to occupy nearest-neighbor sites adjacent to Y ions, and that the presence of vacancies near either species of cation lowers the migration barriers. Kinetic Monte Carlo results from simulations incorporating this effect are presented and compared with results from simulations in which the effect is not present.

Phase transformations in epitaxial yttrium films grown on (0001)Ti//(0001)Al2O3 Ti-buffered sapphire substrates and hydrogenated for 10 min were characterized using transmission electron microscopy. After hydrogen charging, dense twin lamellae form during α(Y(H))-to-β(YH2) phase transition with twin boundaries predominately parallel to the interface between Y and a substrate. High densities of Shockley partial dislocations are present at the twin boundaries, their glides during phase transformation are responsible for the formation of twin lamellae. Electron diffraction from YH2 phase shows superlattice reflections, which suggests a new type of ordering on octahedral interstitial sites.

Rare-earth doped yttrium oxide nano-particles modified with bio functional polymers are one of the good candidate for upconversion bio imager. The requirement to the particles for bio imaging application is a small particle size less than 50 nm, dispersion and chemical durability in body fluid. In this study, polyacrylic acid (PAAc) was used for both precursor precipitation and surface modification of the calcinated particles. The use of the PAAc resulted in small particle size at 33 nm. Also, the modification by adding 104 PAAc/particle resulted in chemical durability and dispersion of the particles under heavily acidic and basic conditions.

Electrical conduction properties of charge ordering type ferroelectrics YFe2O4 were investigated. YFe2O4 was synthesized in reduced atmosphere at 1200 °C. Oxygen partial pressure of the reduced atmosphere was controlled by the equilibrium state of CO and CO2. YFe2O4 is paramagnetic at room temperature and has Néel temperature around 250K. The Néel temperature was decreased with increasing the amount of oxygen deficiency. Moreover, YFe2O4 showed ohmic conduction from 260 to 100 K. The temperature dependence of the DC conductivity showed an inflection point at the Néel temperature, which indicated the development of charge ordering of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. From the complex impedance measurements, the equivalent circuits of YFe2O4 with different oxygen deficiency were determined at various temperatures.

In order to describe the role of temperature variation on suppress of broad range of magnetic transition, the effect of annealing on different samples of a Gd-based intermetallic compound (i.e., Gd2Au) is investigated. The X-ray, AC and D.C susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements for different annealed samples revealed that: (i) A great exchange dispersion is observed in A.C susceptibility (ii) This unstable exchange can be stabilized at certain annealing temperature, where the short rang unstable Ferromagnetic (F.M) breaks down or even changes to an Antiferromagnetic (AF.M) stable state. (iii) The DC susceptibility shows a spin-glass like transition temperature at TN= 61 K, above which the compound exhibits a completely paramagnetic (P.M) behavior and is field independent. (iv) the iso-termal magnetization does not follow the field induced transition (F.I.T) and behaves completely as a paramagnet which is independent of the field up to the highest available fields. The electrical resistivity measurement shows: a) A pronounced sharp bend at TN=61 K is manifested in ρ(T). b)some strong peak of X-ray pattern change into double adjacent lines in some intervals of low temperatures

This paper is divided into three parts. In the first one we identify the project that led the Spaniards to settle in the Far East in the last third of the sixteenth century. In the second, we analyse the resources that the Spanish Crown counted on in order to support the project. And, finally, the incentives that the latter generated to stimulate the installation in the islands of settlers that assured their continuity, at least until the last third of the eighteenth century, are also studied. The sources used are basically the accounts of the Philippine Treasury of the late sixteenth century and first half of the seventeenth century, the primitive ‘relaciones’ of the conquest (1575–1590) and the ‘crónicas’ of the early sixteenth century.
