Summary

Chapter 12 summarizes techniques of flow control and optimization. The reader is introduced into both passive and active flow control. Techniques such as flexible boundaries, wave induced forcing, feed-forward and feedback control and optimal control theory are all discussed in some detail.

An optimal control problem is studied for a predator-prey system of PDE, with a logisticgrowth rate of the prey and a general functional response of the predator. The controlfunction has two components. The purpose is to maximize a mean density of the two speciesin their habitat. The existence of the optimal solution is analyzed and some necessaryoptimality conditions are established. The form of the optimal control is found in someparticular cases.

An optimal control problem is studiedfor a Lotka-Volterra system of three differential equations. Itmodels an ecosystem of three species which coexist. The speciesare supposed to be separated from each others. Mathematically,this is modeled with the aid of two control variables. Somenecessary conditions of optimality are found in order to maximizethe total number of individuals at the end of a given timeinterval.
