Orthoamphibole, clinoamphibole and magnetite are common minerals in altered rocks associated spatially with Palaeoproterozoic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in Colorado, USA and metamorphosed to the amphibolite facies. These altered rocks are dominated by the assemblage orthoamphibole (anthophyllite/gedrite)–cordierite–magnetite±gahnite±sulfides. Magnetite also occurs in granitoids, banded iron formations, quartz garnetite, and in metallic mineralisation consisting of semi-massive pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite with subordinate galena, gahnite and magnetite; amphibole also occurs in amphibolite. The precursor to the anthophyllite/gedrite–cordierite assemblages was probably the assemblage quartz–chlorite formed from hydrothermal ore-bearing fluids (~250° to 400°C) associated with the formation of metallic minerals in the massive sulfide deposits.

Element–element variation diagrams for amphibole, magnetite and ilmenite based on LA-ICP-MS data and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for orthoamphiboles and magnetite show a broad range of compositions which are primarily dependent upon the nature of the host rock associated spatially with the deposits. Although discrimination plots of Al/(Zn+Ca) vs Cu/(Si+Ca) and Sn/Ga vs Al/Co for magnetite do not indicate a VMS origin, the concentration of Al+Mn together with Ti+V and Sn vs Ti support a hydrothermal rather than a magmatic origin for magnetite. Principal Component Analyses also show that magnetite and orthoamphibole in metamorphosed altered rocks and sulfide zones have distinctive eigenvalues that allow them to be used as prospective pathfinders for VMS deposits in Colorado. This, in conjunction with the contents of Zn and Al in magnetite, Zn and Pb in amphibole, ilmenite and magnetite, the Cu content of orthoamphibole and ilmenite, and possibly the Ga and Sn concentrations of magnetite constitute effective exploration vectors.

The transmission electron microscope is now used in a great variety of mineralogical and petrological contexts, The development of such applications over the past thirty years is illustrated by reference mainly to studies on serpentine and amphibole minerals.

Potassium pargasite containing 3.19 wt. % K2O was found in a skarn from the islet of Einstödingen, Lützow-Holm Bay, East Antarctica, together with some high potassium pargasitic amphiboles. A positive correlation is shown between Fe2+/(Mg+Fe2+) and K/(K + Na(A)) ratios in pargasitic amphiboles suggesting that the increase of Fe2+ serve to stabilize high-K pargasites under the metamorphic conditions of the granulite facies.

Remnants of early Archaean (Akilia) iron-formation occur as enclaves within the c. 3700 Ma Amitsoq gneisses in the eastern Godthåb-Sukkertoppen region of southern West Greenland. Amphibole- and pyroxene-bearing assemblages are preserved respectively in these two areas. The amphibole-facies rocks comprise one, two, and three-amphibole-bearing assemblages, coexisting with magnetite and quartz (and locally garnet). Experimentally determined phase equilibria suggest that the amphibole-bearing types have not exceeded c. 700 °C, while distribution coefficients in the two-pyroxene ironformation indicate a maximum temperature of around 625 °C.

The distribution coefficients are variable both from one rock to another and internally from one set of grain pairs to another. The development of the observed variable silicate phase assemblages is dependent upon a complex interaction of not only metamorphic grade (P and T) and element availability, but more importantly aH2o and fo2. In particular, the possibility of reactions between observed assemblages containing cummingtonite + actinolite, magnesian actinotite + magnetite and ferrohypersthene+ferrosalite suggest lesser or greater degrees of dehydration under oxidizing or reducing conditions. The distribution of Mg and Ni over the octahedrally-coordinated sites M(l,2,3) in Ni-substituted potassic richterite solid solution, AKB(NaCa)c(Mg2.5Ni2.5)Si8O22(OH)2, synthesized at 0.1 GPa/750°C (25 days), has been studied in situ to 700°C by neutron powder diffraction with Rietveld structure refinement. Using a 2.7 g sample it was possible to make short data collections (3 h) at each temperature at intervals of 50° from 50 to700°C and locate the onset of cation exchange. Above 700°C the amphibole decomposes rapidly and so only an on-heating dataset was collected. Unit-cell parameters increase smoothly upon heating, with no discontinuities evident. Site occupancies of M(l), M(2) and M(3) sites were refined from site-scattering values. The initial XNi values of M(l), M(2) and M(3) sites, corresponding to the synthesis temperature of 750°C, are 0.57(1), 0.34(1) and 0.68(2), respectively. Above 400°C, there is initial ordering whereby thermal annealing allows the disordered Mg-Ni distribution of the quenched synthesis product to adjust to be closer to those appropriate for lower temperatures of the heating sequence. This ordering involves the exchange of Mg and Ni between M(l) and M(2), with no significant change in M(3) occupancy. At 700°C, XNi values of the M(l), M(2) and M(3) sites are 0.64(1), 0.27(1) and 0.69(2), respectively. No disordering was observed, due to the short duration of the high-temperature data collections and decomposition at 750°C. The results of this study indicate that divalent cations exchange between octahedral sites in amphiboles in a matter of hours.

The carbonatites at Loe Shilman, near Khyber in NW Pakistan, fenitize their country rocks to form a metasomatic zone c.100 m wide of alternate dark blue (mafic) and pale grey (felsic) banded fenites which grade into unfenitized bedded slates and phyllites. The Na-amphiboles in the banded fenites form a complete solid solution series between magnesio-arfvedsonite and magnesio-riebeckite which coexist with varying proportions of aegirine, albite, and K-feldspar, with or without phlogopite or biotite.

The amphiboles show a gradual decrease in Na2O, K2O, Mg ratio [100Mg/(Mg + FeT + Mn)] and iron oxidation ratio, and an increase in total iron away from the carbonatite contact. The pleochroism correlates with the chemistry and distance from the carbonatite contact.

The Mg ratio decreases from 74 to 35 away from the carbonatite contact. The iron oxidation ratio [100Fe3+/ (Fe3+ + Fe2+)] decreases in the magnesio-arfvedsonite for the first 30 metres from the carbonatite contact, and then increases in the magnesio-riebeckite from 40 to 60 metres from the carbonatite contact. K relative to Na decreases away from the contact in the amphibole, and the decrease in K causes an increase in vacancy in the A site. The main variation in the chemistry in this solid solution series is due to (K,Na)A+(Mg,Fe2+)c ⇌ □ + (Fe3+)c substitution.

The Pandé massif is a small (4.9×63.4 km) subvolcanic complex of the Cameroon Line striking W – E and intrudes a Panafrican granite basement. It comprises a syenite-granite suite, where coarse- to finegrained syenites are predominant and the granites are the product of residual melt after syenite crystallization, and two volcanic (trachyte-rhyolite and trachyte) sequences. Amphibole and pyroxene are the dominant mafic silicates, the first occurring mainly in rhyolites and coarse- to medium-grained syenites, and the second, principally in all syenites, trachytes and granites. Rare biotite flakes are encountered in the coarse-grained or alkaline syenites and fayalite rimmed with oxides occurs in trachyte from the first volcanic sequence (T1). Apatite and zircon are common accessories, whereas some titanite occurs in the medium-grained syenites. The plutonic rocks are drusy, intrude the first volcanic sequence but pre-date the second (T2).

All the mafic minerals are Fe-rich. Detailed studies of amphibole and pyroxene show that their compositions define relatively limited trends, amphibole varying from ferro-richterite to arfvedsonite and pyroxenes along the acmite-hedenbergite join of the Ac-Hd-Di diagram, in both the intrusive suite and volcanic rocks. Where the two minerals coexist, pyroxene crystallized subsequent to amphibole, a situation generally found in late-stage or subsolidus aegirines. The overlap in plutonic and volcanic pyroxene trends suggests their crystallization from magmas of the same composition. However, the presence of quartz and fayalite in T1 and of pure aegirine in T2 and the occurrence of Zr-bearing aegirine (NaZr0.5Fe0.52+Si2O6) in the early crystallizing alkaline syenites evolving towards pure aegirine from medium- to fine-grained quartz syenites and granites, are consistent with changes in oxygen fugacities during magmatic differentiation. Two stages are distinguished: fO2 increasingly decreased from T1 to alkaline syenite emplacement (from 10−16 to 10−24 bracketed by WM and QFM buffers) where a disequilibrium, probably caused by water dissociation with volatile loss (H2) during magma degassing, favoured crystallization of Zr-bearing aegirine; a decrease in amphibole proportions towards medium-grained quartz syenites and an increase in fO2 from the medium-grained quartz syenites to granites and T2 sequence.

The Mg-poor nature of all the mafic silicates, subsolidus origin of amphiboles, crystallization of pyroxene subsequent to amphibole and subsolidus trends defined by pyroxenes are compatible with the parental magma having itself been a late-stage derivative magma, e.g. the last product of an alkaline melt from which the voluminous Mayo Darlé granite bodies crystallized.

Sodic-calcic and alkali amphiboles from benmoreitic members of the Igaliko Dyke Swarm contain up to 4.13 wt. % ZrO2. It is proposed that Zr enters the amphiboles by a coupled substitution of

(where C = octahedral site and T = tetrahedral site) to produce the richest Zr-bearing amphiboles so far identified, with compositions ranging up to

These amphiboles crystallize at a late stage from magmas which were Zr-rich, highly peralkaline and hydrous, with an fo2 close to the synthetic QMF buffer. The incorporation of Zr in to the amphibole is a consequence of the failure of other Zr-bearing phases (such as zircon, baddeleyite, eudialyte) to crystallize.

Amphiboles in dykes from the dominantly silica-undersaturated Monteregian series range from pargasitic megacrysts and xenocrysts to kaersutitic, pargasitic and hastingsitic phenocrysts, groundmass prisms and reaction rims. Amphiboles in dykes and plutons from the silica-oversaturated White Mountain Magma Series range from kaersutite, through hornblende, hastingsite and edenite, to sodic-calcic and sodic varieties. This contrast between the amphiboles from the two series is probably a reflection of differing melt silica activity and is a useful petrologic discriminant. In most cases, pargasitic amphibole megacrysts from Monteregian monchiquites reflect the Mg numbers of their host rocks and are considered cognate. The megacrysts are lower in Ti and higher in Mg and Al than their phenocryst mantles and rims. This is probably a result of higher pressures of formation.

PEEM allows ‘real-time’ observations to be made of solid-state transformations and other high-temperature processes taking place during vacuum-heating up to c. 2000°C The solid state transformations of an amphibole-rich hornblendite specimen have been observed in the temperature range of 750–1000°C (± 50°C Between c. 970–990°C a rapid change in orientation contrast was observed, indicating a structural rearrangement from an oxyhornblende crystal lattice to a clinopyroxene structure. This phase retains the original amphibole shape and texture (including two 120°C intersecting cleavage traces), but possesses a clinopyroxene crystal structure. At higher temperatures this phase is seen to decompose, forming iron oxides and other fine-grained products. PEEM has provided useful information on both the nature and rates of transformation of natural amphiboles which has proved invaluable in our understanding of the mineralogically-controlled mechanisms of argon release during 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole samples.

Ions of Li, Na, K, and B were incorporated in Ca-mica, CaMg3Al2Si2O10F2. The crystallization process and the properties of the resulting glass-ceramics were experimentally determined, and the role of the anions and cations is discussed. According to the results, Li, K, and Na ions strongly affected the formation of the crystalline phases. Until 900 °C, pargasite and F-cannilloite amphiboles and KLi-mica were predominately crystallized. The two amphiboles are dissociated, yielding stable forsterite at 900 °C and Ca-mica and spinel at 950 °C. KLi-mica showed remarkable stability and growth within the investigated temperature range, until 1000 °C. The optimum crystallization temperature for the investigated glass-ceramics is between800 °C and 900 °C. The produced glass-ceramics exhibited capability for easy bulk crystallization, high whiteness, translucency, and mechanical and chemical properties suitable for several applications.
