This chapter explores the reasons why workers would stay in or run from a factory, as well as the traps and perceived appeal of temporary employment and day labor jobs. It discusses the role of employment service agencies and their networks of job intermediaries in sustaining factories’ power and control over workers and in making workers more vulnerable and more susceptible to informal and temporary employment.

After the Neolithic transition, arguably the most important economic shift was the industrial revolution. Prior to the industrial revolution, for the previous 10,000 years, the world relied (almost) exclusively on small-scale agriculture or pastoralism for economic production. The industrial revolution, starting largely with the development of the steam engine, had a profound effect on the material relationship of the individual to economic production, as individuals became part of industrial production. This change also had significant impacts on demographics: cities grew as the economics drove mass migrations away from rural areas to industrialized areas. Industrialization also had a long-lasting effect on politics, as workers organized to make improvements in working conditions and shift the power balance between labor and capital. Marxism was born of this struggle, and I explore the premises behind this philosophy, and the reasons for expansion as well as ultimate failure of this profoundly influential economic model. Here I speak to the contradictions between modern humanism and the authoritarian application of Marxism, drawing in the discussion on chaos and complexity and the difficulties with attempting central control on something as complex as a national economy.

This chapter explores the transformation of the world of the American worker wrought by the Great War.Before the war, American industry demanded an endless supply of cheap labor. This imperative structured all aspects of working-class life——labor conditions and pay, home and neighborhood, politics and labor organization, and even its heterogenous racial and national composition. It had brought into being a working class at once within and apart from mainstream America. The economic and political forces unleashed by the Great War made America’s workers both the objects and agents of immense change. With the drastic curtailment of immigration caused by wartime conditions, workers could no longer be viewed as replaceable cogs, mere labor inputs in the production process. Neither could the insularity of their communities be tolerated, for during war, government and industry demanded loyalty, even active allegiance. Yet workers seized on the possibilities presented by the war in a bid to chart their own course. Emerging from this maelstrom was a dramatically different relationship between workers, on one hand, and business and government, on the other, ending the epoch of mass immigration and putting in place the beginnings of a labor system that valued long-term employment and worker loyalty.
