The Nriagu polymer model of 2:1 layer type clay minerals develops from the premise that clay minerals are condensation copolymers of solid hydroxides. In the Mattigod-Sposito formulation of the model, standard state chemical potentials (standard Gibbs energies of formation from the elements) of 2:1 clay minerals are predicted quantitatively with a linear correlation equation relating the standard Gibbs energy of the polymerization reaction (ΔGor) to the half-cell layer charge of the clay mineral and to the valence and ionic radius of the exchangeable cation. It is now shown that this correlation equation can be derived from two basic assumptions: (1) that the standard Gibbs energy change for the transfer of a cation in a pure hydroxide solid to a hydroxide component in the tetrahedral or octahedral sheet of a 2:1 clay mineral is independent of the nature of the cation and (2) that the difference between ΔGor for the polymerization reaction to form a 2:1 clay mineral and ΔGor for the same reaction to form the zero layer-charge analog of the clay mineral is proportional to the number of interlayer exchangeable cations per unit cell of the clay mineral and to the radius of its exchangeable cation. Both of these assumptions can be tested experimentally, independent of the polymer model.

A meta-porphyritic granitoid in the Makrohar Granulite Belt, Central India contains extensive myrmekite. This work evaluates the controls of fluid in relation to deformation and the formation of myrmekite all along the periphery of an alkali-feldspar megacryst. Two different myrmekite morphologies are present: (1) vermicular intergrowth of plagioclase (An38–39) and quartz (Myr1); and (2) polygonal aggregates of coarse plagioclase (An45–46) and quartz (Myr2). Petrographic features suggest that myrmekite Myr1 nucleates on alkali-feldspar and plagioclase porphyroclasts and the myrmekite front moved into the alkali feldspar by replacing it; and that myrmekite Myr2 and the secondary biotite which replaces plagioclase porphyroclasts and garnet form together. Deformation had a decisive role in forming the polygonal aggregates of Myr2, however field and microtextural features do not support any significant control of deformation during the formation of Myr1. Reaction modelling and a mass-balance calculation suggest that Ca and Na are added to, and K is removed from, the alkali feldspar during the myrmekite formation at nearly constant Si and Al. However, the secondary biotite-forming reaction, consumes K and releases Ca. Interpretation of the reaction textures in different isothermal–isobaric sections of μK2O–μCaO in the KCFASH system suggest that CaO and K2O moved in opposite directions for myrmekitisation and along their respective chemical potential gradients created between the sites of formation of myrmekite and secondary biotite. The feedback mechanism which operated between the two reaction sites was controlled by infiltration of brine-rich fluid in the meta-granitoid during a regional hydration event (550–600oC and 5–6 kbar). Volume reduction of ~10% during the formation Myr1 and Myr2 drew the brine-rich fluid towards the alkali feldspar and thus facilitated the process of myrmekite formation. Variation in the morphology of quartz in the myrmekite is attributed to the cooling of the complex.

Chaperones protect other proteins against misfolding and aggregation, a key requirement for maintaining biological function. Experimental observations of changes in solubility of amyloid proteins in the presence of certain chaperones are discussed here in terms of thermodynamic driving forces. We outline how chaperones can enhance amyloid solubility through the formation of heteromolecular aggregates (co-aggregates) based on the second law of thermodynamics and the flux towards equal chemical potential of each compound in all phases of the system. Higher effective solubility of an amyloid peptide in the presence of chaperone implies that the chemical potential of the peptide is higher in the aggregates formed under these conditions compared to peptide-only aggregates. This must be compensated by a larger reduction in chemical potential of the chaperone in the presence of peptide compared to chaperone alone. The driving force thus relies on the chaperone being very unhappy on its own (high chemical potential), thus gaining more free energy than the amyloid peptide loses upon forming the co-aggregate. The formation of heteromolecular aggregates also involves the kinetic suppression of the formation of homomolecular aggregates. The unhappiness of the chaperone can explain the ability of chaperones to favour an increased population of monomeric client protein even in the absence of external energy input, and with broad client specificity. This perspective opens for a new direction of chaperone research and outlines a set of outstanding questions that aim to provide additional cues for therapeutic development in this area.

Partial equilibrium textures such as corona provide information on changing pressure–temperature (P-T) conditions experienced by a rock during its geological evolution. Coronae layers may form in single or multiple stages; understanding the genesis of each layer is necessary to correctly extract information regarding the physicochemical conditions experienced by the rock. Mafic rocks from SE Chotanagpur Granite Gneissic Complex, India, show the presence of multi-layered coronae at olivine–plagioclase contact with the mineral sequence: olivine | orthopyroxene | amphibole + spinel | plagioclase. Textural studies indicate that the coronae formed during metamorphism in a single stage due to a reaction between olivine and plagioclase. Reaction modelling shows that the corona formation occurred in an open system and experienced a minor volume loss. Pseudosection modelling and thermobarometry suggest that the P-T conditions related to corona formation are 860 ± 50°C and 7 ± 0.5 kbar. A μMgO-μCaO diagram shows that the layers in coronae formed in response to chemical potential gradients between the reactant minerals. A combination of field observations and the P-T conditions of coronae formation suggest a fluid-driven metamorphism. Correlation with extant geological information indicates that the corona-forming event is possibly related to the accretion of India and Antarctica during the assembly of Rodinia.

A consistent description of the hydrogen permeation through metal membrane based on hydrogen chemical potential proposed has been explained in detail. The hydrogen flux is proportional to the PCT factor, f PCT, consistently, which reflects the shape of the pressure-composition-isotherm (PCT curve) of the material. In addition, in view of the PCT factor, f PCT, and the ductile-to-brittle transition hydrogen concentration, DBTC, a concept for alloy design with high hydrogen permeability and strong resistance to hydrogen embrittlement has been proposed. In this concept, it is important to design alloy composition with appropriate PCT curve under the given pressure and temperature condition. As an example, V–9 mol% Al alloy has been designed, which exhibits high hydrogen flux without brittle fracture under given condition. Thus, the new consistent description is useful not only for the understanding of the hydrogen permeation property but also for the alloy design.

The pairing of a chemical potential and its associated concentration rate in the thermodynamic identity is well known. The existence of an experimentally determinable molar volume as a function of molar concentrations is also widely used in chemical engineering. What is perhaps less known and infrequently used is the fact that a spatially nonuniform molar volume leads to a field of geometrically incompatible eigenstrain, or eigentransformation in finite deformation. This incompatibility forces the material environment to deform, and the result is a strain energy trapped inside the material body. The change of this energy with respect to the eigentransformation is a generalized configurational stress, which, in the limit as the eigentransformation tends to the identity transformation, tends to the classical energy momentum tensor of Eshelby [1], or the so-called configurational stress. It is shown that the generalized configurational stress is an integral part of the chemical potentials that are responsible for atomic diffusion. This cycle of cause and effect is demonstrated in an axially symmetric setting where the material configuration is taken to be cylindrically orthotropic.

Symmetry can be used in many occasions to bare the simple meaning of a complex mathematical expression hiding under the disguise of tensors and index notation. We used it to elucidate the “missing” term in surface chemical potential in 1996 [2] and are now applying it to identify the chemical potential in the bulk. Both Professor Thomas C. T. Ting and I are civil engineering graduates of Tai-Da, the world-renowned National Taiwan University, but did not know each other until we joined UIC. It has been a wonderful friendship of many stimulating anisotropic discussions and numerous delicious potluck dinners. Happy birthday, Tom!
