The Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamic Evolution (BAaDE) project attempts to improve our knowledge about the structure and dynamics of the inner Milky Way galaxy by sampling tens of thousands of infrared color-selected evolved stars with circumstellar envelopes (CSEs). The SiO masers in these CSEs yield the object’s line-of-sight velocity instantly and accurately, and together provide a sample of point-mass particles that are complementary to high-mass star formation masers typically found in the Galactic Disk as well as to optical samples that cannot reach into the Galactic Plane and Bulge due to extremely high visual extinction. This presentation introduces the BAaDE survey and highlights current results.

Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) binary systems are binary interaction products. These stars have recently undergone a strong, but not well understood, binary interaction phase, leading to the formation of stable, compact circumbinary discs. These circumbinary discs are found to show many similar properties to protoplanetary discs around young stars. Here, we focus on one such system, namely IRAS 08544-4431 and resolve the inner regions of the complex circumstellar environment using multi-wavelength infrared interferometric techniques. The visibility data of PIONIER (H-band), GRAVITY (K-band), and MATISSE (L and N band) are analysed together using two families of geometric models, giving a good fit to all data.

The outflows of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are important astrochemical laboratories, rich in molecular material and host to various chemical processes, including dust formation. Since the different chemistries are relatively easily probed, AGB outflows are ideal testbeds within the wider astrochemical community. Recent observations are pushing the limits of both our current chemical models and radiative transfer routines. Current chemical models are restricted by the completeness of their chemical networks and the accuracy of the reaction rates. The molecular abundances retrieved by radiative transfer routines are strongly dependent on collisional rates, which are often not measured or calculated for molecules of interest. To further our understanding of the chemistry within the outflow, collaboration with the laboratory astrophysics community is essential. This collaboration is mutually beneficial, as it in turn provides new science questions for laboratory experiments and computations.

We observed the circumstellar environments (CSEs) of the semiregular AGB stars L2 Puppis, R Doradus and EP Aquarii with ALMA. (1) The molecular emission in the L2 Pup nebula reveals an edge-on rotating disk. (2) PV diagrams of the 28SiO emission in the inner CSE of R Dor expose a pattern pointing to an inclined rotating disk. (3) The CO emission in the CSE of EP Aqr reveals a nearly face-on equatorial density enhancement (EDE). The inner EDE strongly resembles theoretical wind-Roche-lobe-overflow models. The SiO emission points to a potential companion. The combination of (1), (2) and (3) suggests that a link may exist between the type of AGB pulsations and the morphological nature of the CSE.

The chemistry within the outflow of an AGB star is determined by its elemental C/O abundance ratio. Thanks to the advent of high angular resolution observations, it is clear that most outflows do not have a smooth density distribution, but are inhomogeneous or “clumpy”. We have developed a chemical model that takes into account the effect of a clumpy outflow on its gas-phase chemistry by using a theoretical porosity formalism. The clumpiness of the model increases the inner wind abundances of all so-called unexpected species, i.e. species that are not predicted to be present assuming an initial thermodynamic equilibrium chemistry. By applying the model to the distribution of cyanopolyynes and hydrocarbon radicals within the outflow of IRC+10216, we find that the chemistry traces the underlying density distribution.
