The interaction of the electron beam with materials during TEM/STEM imaging often leads to radiation damage. While a variety of low-dose techniques can help mitigate beam damage, true dose management starts with knowing the precise total accumulated dose and dose rate that a sample has seen throughout an experiment. AXON Dose allows users to calibrate their instruments, track electron dose/dose rate across a sample as a function of time and location, and quantify the impact of dose on individual samples.

FLASH radiotherapy is a novel technique that has been shown in numerous preclinical in vivo studies to have the potential to be the next important improvement in cancer treatment. However, the biological mechanisms responsible for the selective FLASH sparing effect of normal tissues are not yet known. An optimal translation of FLASH radiotherapy into the clinic would require a good understanding of the specific beam parameters that induces a FLASH effect, environmental conditions affecting the response, and the radiobiological mechanisms involved. Even though the FLASH effect has generally been considered as an in vivo effect, studies finding these answers would be difficult and ethically challenging to carry out solely in animals. Hence, suitable in vitro studies aimed towards finding these answers are needed. In this review, we describe and summarise several in vitro assays that have been used or could be used to finally elucidate the mechanisms behind the FLASH effect.

Naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORMS) and fallout 137Cs were estimated in surface soils from the highly mineralized Singhbhum region of Eastern India. The activity concentrations varied from 50.67-109.14 Bq/kg (238U), 48.12-142.55 Bq/kg (226Ra), 28.73-89.78 Bq/kg (232Th), 494.84-1121.36 Bq/kg (40K) and 1.8-7.48 Bq/kg (137Cs). Correlation between radionuclides was studied. 232Th/238U concentration (Clark value) was also calculated. Radiation hazard for the samples was assessed by radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex), internal hazard index (Hin) and absorbed gamma dose rate (D). Raeq values ranged from 216-263 Bq/kg, Hex values from 0.58-0.71 Bq/kg, Hin values from 0.73-1 Bq/kg and D values from 100-121 nGy/h. Calculated and observed dose rates in air were compared with the help of parametric and non-parametric tests. The tests showed significant difference between the calculated and observed dose rates.

This article deals with the estimation of inserted defects in bone material by photons used for radiation therapy, for instance, to treat carcinogenic diseases including bone cancer. However, there are side effects by radiation on structures of bones. Structure alters electron density of states that, in time, influences biomedical reactions on bone life condition. Exoelectron emission (EEE) phenomenon underlies a new electron spectroscopy to explore alteration of the electronic structurally dependence properties of bone material. The influence of photons with different energies and the dose rate on the bone structure is discussed. The bone EEE response is not linear on the dose rate and probably is connected with interaction of radiation induced centers responsible for EEE process. EEE structural changes have varied with energy variety of doses used in radiotherapy.

Dans le cadre de la mise en application des recommandations décrites dans la publication 60 de la CIPR, des mesures de spectrométrie neutron ont été réalisées à plusieurs postes de travail au CEA de Valduc. Le but de ces mesures était la détermination de nouveaux coefficients d'étalonnage à affecter aux dosimètres individuels neutron PGP-DIN afin de restituer correctement les doses reçues par les opérateurs séjournant à ces postes. Ces mesures ont été effectuées au cours de deux campagnes successives. La fluence neutronique et le débit d'équivalent de dose ambiant $\dot{H}^*$(10) ont été mesurés en fonction de l'énergie avec le spectromètre ROSPEC et un système de sphères de BONNER. Les champs de radiations étant toutefois mixtes, c'est-à-dire présentant une composante neutronique et photonique, des mesures de débits d'équivalent de dose ambiant photon aux postes de travail considérés ont également été réalisées à l'aide de débitmètres d'ambiance. Les dosimètres individuels PGP-DIN ont été positionnés sur un fantôme (ISO) d'eau. Des calculs effectués à l'aide du code MCNP ont été comparés aux résultats expérimentaux.

To study population kinetics during primary Ascaris suum infections, 3 groups of 52 pigs each were inoculated with 100, 1000, or 10000 infective eggs. In all groups, the majority of larvae was found in the liver on day 3 post inoculation (p.i.) and in the lungs on day 7 p.i. Liver white spots, caused by migrating larvae, were most numerous at day 7 p.i., whereafter they gradually healed, and only low numbers of granulation-tissue type white spots and lymphonodular white spots persisted at days 21–56 p.i. Independent of dose level, 47–58% of the inoculated eggs were recovered as larvae in the small intestine on day 10 p.i., but most larvae were eliminated at days 17–21 p.i. This elimination started earlier and removed a higher percentage of the worms with increasing inoculation dose, resulting in small strongly aggregated worm populations by day 28 p.i. (k of the negative binomial distribution was low: 0·2–0·4) without significant differences between groups. Thus, overdispersion, which is a characteristic of both porcine and human ascarosis, is found here under experimental conditions where aggregation factors like host behaviour, transmission rate, host status etc have been partly or totally controlled.
