We introduce the two axioms on which SR is based, namely the Principle of Relativity and the constancy of the speed of light.

We are now able to deduce the Lorentz transformation, relating two inertial frames. We examine three paradoxes, namely the famous twins paradox, the pole-in-the-barn paradox, and the so-called Bell's spaceships paradox. We also take another look at the relationship with electromagnetism.

Chapter 1 contains the problem statements of the 150 problems in special relativity theory. The chapter is divided into nine sections with problems organized by different topics defined by the keywords in the section headings.

The serious scientific application of the atomic theory began in the eighteenth century, with calculations of the properties of gases, which had been studied experimentally since the century before. This is the topic with which we begin this chapter. Applications to chemistry and electrolysis followed in the nineteenth century, and are considered in subsequent sections. The final section of this chapter describes how the nature of atoms began to be clarified with the discovery of the electron.

While gravity was the first of the fundamental forces to be quantified and at least partially understood -- beginning all the way back in the seventeenth century -- it took an additional 200 years for physicists to unravel the secrets of a second fundamental force, the electromagnetic force. Ironically, it is the electromagnetic force that is by far the stronger of the two, and at least as prevalent in our daily lives. The fact that atoms and molecules stick together to form the matter we are made of, the contact forces we feel when we touch objects around us, and virtually all modern technological advances of the twentieth century, all these rely on the electromagnetic force. In this chapter, we introduce the subject within the Lagrangian formalism and demonstrate some familiar as well as unfamiliar aspects of this fascinating fundamental force of Nature.

Chapter Three analyses the ‘theoretical’ connections that many physical-psychical scientists made between ‘physics and psychics’.It analyses general physical arguments against philosophical materialism and other ‘stumbling blocks’ to the idea of mind and spirit in the cosmos; vague analogies between physical and psychical effects; and more radical physical theories and explanations of telepathy and other psychical phenomena.The chapter highlights the extrordinary creativity of physical scientists in applying their concepts, ideas and theories to psychical puzzles.It also examines the criticism that many physicsts levelled against such psychical uses of physics and argues that while leading physical-psychical scientists accepted many of the problems with physical theories of largely non-physical phenomena, they never completely abandoned the idea that some kind of physical theory would ultimately help render psychical effects more intelligible.
