For a fixed k ∈ {1, …, d}, consider arbitrary random vectors X0, …, Xk ∈ ℝd such that the (k + 1)-tuples (UX0, …, UXk) have the same distribution for any rotation U. Let A be any nonsingular d × d matrix. As an application, we derive the following integral geometry formula for ellipsoids: ck,d,p∫Ad,k |ɛ ∩ E|p+d+1μd,k(dE) = |ɛ|k+1∫Gd,k |PLɛ|pνd,k(dL), where $c_{k,d,p} = \big({\kappa_{d}^{k+1}}/{\kappa_k^{d+1}}\big) ({\kappa_{k(d+p)+k}}/{\kappa_{k(d+p)+d}})$. Here p > −1 and Ad,k and Gd,k are the affine and the linear Grassmannians equipped with their respective Haar measures. The p = 0 case reduces to an affine version of the integral formula of Furstenberg and Tzkoni (1971).

A facile and reproducible low-temperature (80 °C) solution route has been introduced to synthesize ZnO ellipsoids on silicon substrate without any pretreatment of the substrate or organic/inorganic additives. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction spectroscopy are performed to analyze the structural evolution, the single crystalline nature, and growth orientation at different stages of the synthetic process. The sequential formation mechanisms of heterogeneous nucleation in primary and secondary crystal growth behaviors have been discussed in detail. The presented results reveal that the morphology of micro/nanostructures with desired features can be optimized. The optical properties of grown structures at different stages were investigated using cathodoluminescence (CL). The monochromatic CL images were recorded to examine the UV and visible band emission contributions from the different positions of the intermediate and final structures of the individual ZnO ellipsoid. Significant enhancement in the defect level emission intensity at the central position of the structure reveals that the quality of the material improves as the reaction time is extended.

The flow field around a 6:1 prolate spheroid has been investigated by means of direct numerical simulations. Contrary to earlier studies the major axis of the spheroid was oriented perpendicular to the oncoming flow. At the subcritical Reynolds number 10 000 the laminar boundary layer separated from the frontal side of the spheroid and formed an elliptical vortex sheet. The detached shear layer was unstable from its very inception and even the near-wake turned out to be turbulent. The Strouhal number associated with the large-scale shedding was 0.156, significantly below that of the wake of a sphere. A higher-frequency mode was associated with Kelvin–Helmholtz instabilities in the detached shear layer. The shape of the near-wake mirrored the shape of the spheroid. Some 10 minor diameters downstream, the major axis of the wake became aligned with the minor axis of the spheroid.

Classification of real K3 surfaces $X$ with non-symplectic involution $\tau$ is considered. We define a natural notion of degeneration for them. We show that the connected component of moduli of non-degenerate surfaces of this type is defined by the isomorphism class of the action of $\tau$ and the anti-holomorphic involution $\varphi$ in the homology lattice. (There are very few similar results known.) For their classification we apply invariants of integral lattice involutions with conditions that were developed by the first author in 1983. As a particular case, we describe connected components of moduli of real non-singular curves $A \in | -2 K_V|$ for the classical real surfaces: $V = P^2$, hyperboloid, ellipsoid, $F_1$, $F_4$.

As an application, we describe all real polarized K3 surfaces that are deformations of general real K3 double rational scrolls (the surfaces $V$ above). There are very few exceptions. For example, any non-singular real quartic in $P^3$ can be constructed in this way.

A fast and accurate method for detecting the collisions of convex polyhedra in a graphical simulation environment based on a newly developed method of distance estimate is presented. By the simultaneous use of the enclosing and the enclosed ellipsoids of convex polyhedra, potential collisions can be detected more accurate than those methods using only bounding volume for object representation, and more efficient than the polyhedral methods. An approach for computing the enclosed ellipsoid of a convex polyhedron by compressing, stretching and scaling operations on its best-fit enclosing ellipsoid is introduced. Graphical simulations of two case studies (moving polyhedral objects in three-dimensional space and multiple robot arms undergoing straight line motions) are conducted to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed algorithm for collision detection.

In design stereology, and in the context of geometric sampling in general, the problem often arises of estimating the integral of a bounded non-random function over a bounded manifold D ⊂ ℝn by systematic sampling with geometric probes. Variance predictors, often based on Matheron's theory of regionalized variables, are available when the relevant function is sampled at the points of a grid intersecting D, but not when the dimension of the probes is greater than zero. For instance, the volume of a bounded object may be estimated using parallel systematic planes, which amounts to sampling on ℝ1 with systematic points, or using parallel systematic slabs of thickness t > 0, which amounts to sampling on ℝ1 with non-overlapping systematic segments of length t > 0. Useful variance predictors exist for the former case, but not for the latter. In this paper we set out a general scheme to predict estimation variances when the dimension of either D, or of the probes, is n. We make some progress when both dimensions are equal to n, and obtain explicit results for n = 1 (e.g. for systematic slice sampling). We check and illustrate our results for the volume estimators of ellipsoids and of rat lung.
