Flexible electronics researchers have been conducting studies to explore the response of flexible stretchable electrodes to strain. The regulation of strain response in current flexible stretchable electrodes relies primarily on altering the material system, interfacial adhesion, or electrode structure. However, modifying the material system or interfacial adhesion can negatively disrupt the stretchable electrode preparation process, making commercialization a significant challenge. Additionally, the material system may be inadequate in extreme environments such as high temperatures. Hence a systematic structural design approach is crucial for effective response modulation of stretchable electrodes. One potential solution is the design of fibre structures from the micro to macro scale. This article focuses on discussing how the response of stretchable electrodes can be modulated by fibres in different states. The discussion includes fibres on elastic films, fibres directly constituting fibrous membranes at the microscopic level, and fibres constituting metamaterials at the fine level. The modulation can be achieved by altering the orientation of the fibres, the geometrical structure of the fibres themselves, and the geometrical structure formed between the fibres. Additionally, the article analyses the current situation of stretchable electrodes in extreme environments such as high temperatures. It also reviews the development of ceramic fibre membranes that can be stretched in high-temperature environments. The authors further discuss how the stretchability of ceramic fibre membranes can be improved through the structuring of ceramic fibre membranes with metamaterials. Ultimately, the goal is to realize stretchable electrodes that can be used in extreme environments such as high temperatures.

Mafic dykes are typically emplaced through primary hydraulic fracturing of undeformed crust or may make use of pre-existing crustal inhomogeneities, representing the plumbing systems of a large igneous province. The Eastern Dharwar Craton has dense exposures of several generations of Paleoproterozoic mafic dyke swarms ranging from ca. 2.37 Ga to ca. 1.79 Ga. Herein, using anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility fabric data of mafic dykes and associated host granites, the emplacement systematics of the NW- to W-trending ca. 2.21 Ga Anantapur–Kunigal dyke swarm, displaying a radiating geometry, have been studied to understand magma flow dynamics. A low-angle relationship between the silicate and opaque fabrics and good correlation with magnetic lineation, identified via petrographic studies and shape preferred orientation analyses of multiple oriented thin sections, suggest a primary flow-related magnetic anisotropy for the studied dyke samples. The classic subparallel relationship between the trend of the dyke planes and magnetic fabric of the associated host granites suggests that the radiating geometry of the ca. 2.21 Ga dyke swarm was supported by a favourable pre-existing structural grain of the country rock. We interpret the magma for the studied dyke swarm was fed laterally from a distant plume. It was emplaced as laterally propagating primary dyke fractures as well as injected into the pre-existing subparallel crustal inhomogeneities. Corroborating all these inferences, a detailed emplacement model for ca. 2.21 Ga Anantapur–Kunigal dyke swarm is also proposed.

Silk manufacturing began in Lucca in the twelfth century and by the fifteenth century Italy had become the largest producer of silk textiles in Europe, nurtured by extensive domestic and foreign demand for the luxurious fabric. This essay explores the market for silk textiles, the organization of the silk industry, and the role played in it by guilds, entrepreneurs and their capital, and highly sought after artisans. Just as silk manufacturing was an important and lucrative business for entrepreneurs, this article argues, so was it a crucial strategic activity for the governments of Italy's Renaissance states, whose incentives, protections, and investments helped to start up and grow the sector with the aim of generating wealth and strengthening their respective economies.

Quasi-unidirectional glass fibre non crimp fabric composites are routinely used in windenergy applications. An important factor to consider in this type of application is thefatigue behaviour of the materials. The present paper gives an overview of the currentapproach to material fatigue testing and design in the wind energy industry, as well as areview of available material data for the fatigue of unidirectional glass fibrecomposites. Both “pure” unidirectional and quasi-unidirectional (NCF-based) materials areconsidered.

Ce travail s’inscrit dans le cadre de la simulation de la mise en forme de matériauxcomposites. Le cas traité ici est celui du préformage des interlocks. Il s’agit derenforts textiles 3D permettant d’éviter le délaminage rencontré avec des stratifiés. Unélément-fini 3D semi-discret permettant de modéliser la déformation d’une préformeinterlock complète est décrit. Chaque élément tridimensionnel contient des fibres quicontribuent à la rigidité de l’élément. Les paramètres matériaux sont identifiés à partird’essais mécaniques et la simulation est validée par comparaison avec l’expérience.

La connaissance du comportement mécanique des tissus utilisés comme renforts de composites est nécessaire pour réaliser des simulations de préformage. Cette étude vise à rappeler la spécificité du comportement mécanique des tissus secs et à déterminer ces propriétés mécaniques par des essais virtuels. Pour ceci, des analyses éléments-finis 3D des cellules tissées unitaires sont réalisées. Ces calculs ne sont pas classiques compte tenu de la constitution des fils faits de milliers de fibres de petits diamètres. Les mouvements relatifs possibles des fibres rendent très faible la plupart des rigidités autres que celles de tension. Les spécificités du calcul pour déterminer ce comportement mécanique seront décrites. Plusieurs aspects spécifiques de l'analyse sont détaillés ; particulièrement l'utilisation d'une loi hypoélastique basée sur une dérivée objective utilisant la rotation de la fibre. Les résultats de ces tests virtuels sont comparés à des résultats expérimentaux en particulier obtenus par tomographie X. Enfin ces comportements matériaux sont utilisés dans des simulations macroscopiques dans des cas d'emboutissages à un ou plusieurs plis. Il est discuté de l'importance des différentes rigidités dans l'apparition et la forme des plis.

A detailed field and microstructural investigation of mineral fabrics in the late-Caledonian Galway Granite Batholith (∼400 Ma) provides insights into the relationship between emplacement-related deformation and crystallization state. These relationships are used to infer the regional instantaneous strain pattern at the time of intrusion. A Marginal Deformation Zone occurs in the granite along part of its northern sector, where planar fabrics are contact-parallel and dip steeply to the north. Within the Marginal Deformation Zone, the granite has similar patterns of pre- and post-RCMP (Rheologically Critical Melt Percentage) fabrics on either side of the NNE-trending Shannawona Fault Zone, which separates the Western and Central blocks of the batholith. Oblate pre-RCMP fabrics, which intensify towards the contact, are overprinted in a down-temperature continuum of deformation by co-axial post-RCMP fabrics that also become more intense towards the contact. At the southern edge of the Marginal Deformation Zone, deformation ceased before the granite reached its RCMP whereas, close to the contact, deformation ceased at ∼500°C. Within the Central Block, oblate fabrics also developed parallel with internal granite facies boundaries. Throughout the batholith, the fabrics formed by co-axial deformation as a result of lateral expansion operating in successive magma batches at the emplacement level. These intrusion-related fabrics are consistent with other evidence that indicates the Galway Granite was emplaced into a transtensional setting at the end of the Caledonian Orogeny.

The paper presents a knowledge-based system (KBS) for the conceptual design of grippers for handling fabrics. Its main purpose is the integration of the domain knowledge in a single system for the systematic design of this type of grippers. The knowledge presented, in terms of gripper, material and handling process, are classified. The reasoning strategy is based upon a combination of a depth-first search method and a heuristic method. The heuristic search method finds a final solution from a given set of feasible solutions and can synthesize new solutions to accomplish the required specifications. Details of the main features of the system are given, including its ability to take critical design decisions according to four criteria, weighted by the designer. The knowledge-based system was implemented in the Kappa P. C. 2.3.2 environment. Two examples are given to illustrate some critical aspects concerning the KBS development, to explain the operation of the proposed searching heuristic method, and to show its effectiveness in producing design concepts for grippers.

Pipe-shaped breccia bodies associated with diorite intrusions are composed mainly of angular clasts of local schists with a few transported clasts of quartzite. Plate shaped fragments are commonly oriented to define planar fabrics in the breccias. These features indicate the operation of gas fluidisation within the pipes and both entrainment and expanded bed conditions are inferred. The fabrics result from the collapse of the fluidised suspensions as the gas flow declined. Dilational fracture patterns in the country rock comparable with the stress release patterns found around mine shafts can be matched with the fractures required to produce the angular schist clasts. It is concluded that fracturing and the introduction of fragments into the fluidised breccia system was a continuous process and that the pipe diameter increased progressively with time. Microdiorite sheets and related stock like bodies of diorite cut and metamorphose the breccias. Compaction, hornfelsing and hydrothermal alteration also contributed to breccia formation.
