Feed cost is a major impediment to commercial poultry production in the South Pacific region because traditional feed ingredients (grains and oilseeds) are not grown in the region and imported at high price. As a result, meat has to be imported, which in Fiji increased by 69% between 2010 and 2011 (Diarra, 2017). Samoa was valued at about US$ 17 million or 87% of total cost of meat import in the country in 2012 and 2013. Several ingredients, which are available locally, could be included to reduce feed cost in the region. By-products of root/tuber harvest (peels and leaves), low value crops, fruits and by-products (peels and pulps), oil cakes (copra and palm kernel), by-products from the brewery, livestock/poultry slaughter, hatchery and fish processing and insect meal are readily available in most countries of the region. With adequate processing and correct diet formulation, these materials could replace reasonable proportions of the conventional energy and protein ingredients and reduce feed cost. Several factors including the type and source of material, processing method, diet composition, species, age and class of poultry affect the dietary recommendations of alternative ingredients. Currently however, the use of these resources in feed production in the region is limited due to lack of processing and analytical facilities, likely presence of antinutritional substances and poor knowledge on their nutritive value. Continued research into processing technology, regular training for farmers and extension staff and establishment of community owned feed processing units for optimum utilisation of locally available resources will benefits the poultry industry in the region.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary lipid source and carbohydrate content on the oxidative status of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. For that purpose, four diets were formulated with fish oil (FO) and vegetable oils (VO) as the lipid source and with 20 or 0 % gelatinised starch as the carbohydrate source, in a 2×2 factorial design. Liver and intestine antioxidant enzyme activities (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)), hepatic and intestinal lipid peroxidation (LPO), as well as hepatic oxidative stress index (OSI), were measured in fish fed the experimental diets for 73 d (n 9 fish/diet). Carbohydrate-rich diets promoted a decrease in hepatic LPO and OSI, whereas the lipid source induced no changes. Inversely, dietary lipid source, but not dietary carbohydrate concentration, affected LPO in the intestine. Lower intestinal LPO was observed in VO groups. Enzymes responsive to dietary treatments were GR, G6PD and CAT in the liver and GR and GPX in the intestine. Dietary carbohydrate induced GR and G6PD activities and depressed CAT activity in the liver. GPX and GR activities were increased in the intestine of fish fed VO diets. Overall, effects of diet composition on oxidative status were tissue-related: the liver and intestine were strongly responsive to dietary carbohydrates and lipid sources, respectively. Furthermore, different metabolic routes were more active to deal with the oxidative stress in the two organs studied.

Continuous advances in the poultry industry have stimulated the use of alternative feeds in poultry diets, and in particular glycerine, given its availability via the increase in world production of biodiesel. Glycerol is the principal component of glycerine, and can be used as an energy source to replace e.g. corn. However, other residual compounds, such as methanol and high levels of sodium, limit its use in animal feeds in large quantities. Several studies have found that the nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolisable energy of glycerine (AMEn) varies significantly between broilers, laying hens and quail, due to different processing/extraction methods (via biodiesel production). However, an energetic availability of at least 85% has been verified. Knowledge of the main metabolic pathways of glycerol and other components of glycerine is important for future studies on this feed material and to determine its main limitations. Understanding the relationship between the quality of the glycerine and its role as a source of dietary energy will allow more precise inclusion of glycerine in the formulation of balanced diets, without negatively affecting the performance of poultry.

A number of feedstuffs was tested to obtain the apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter, protein, energy and phosphorus for seabass juveniles (individual mean weight of 40 g). The effect of the inclusion level (15 and 30 %) of a feedstuff in a reference diet on the ADC was also evaluated. The feedstuffs tested in this trial were two fish meals, a fish protein hydrolysate, blood meal, meat meal, soybean meal and yellow dextrin. The ADC of dry matter were consistently lower than those of energy, but there was a significant positive correlation between them. The ADC of protein were high (range 89−97 %) in all feedstuffs. The ADC of energy of animal feedstuffs (range 86−96 %) and dextrin (93 %) were also high, while that of soybean was lower (70 %). The ADC of phosphorus of animal feedstuffs averaged 81 % whereas that of soybean was only 38 %. There were no significant differences in the ADC of protein and energy of each feedstuff at the two inclusion levels tested.

The disappearance of total N, non-protein-N and amino acid-N after washing, rumen incubation and intestinal passage of sugarbeet pulp, maize-gluten feed, maize feed meal, palm kernel meal, soyabean hulls, soyabean meal, grass silage, maize silage and concentrate was measured in four dairy cows using nylon-bag techniques. Disappearance of amino acid-N after washing varied between feedstuff's from 14 to 69% of feed amino acid-N, and was lower than disappearance of non-protein-N. For sugarbeet pulp, grass silage and maize silage, washing had a considerable effect on the amino acid profile. Disappearance of amino acid-N after rumen incubation was also lower than non-protein-N and varied between feedstuffs from 25 to 73% of feed amino acid-N. Rumen incubation had only a small effect on the amino acid profile of the residue after washing. Disappearance of amino acid-N in the intestine varied between feedstuffs from 70 to 99% of rumen undegraded amino acid-N, and was higher than the disappearance of non-protein-N. Intestinal incubation showed a considerable effect on the amino acid profile for all feedstuffs. It was concluded that protein that was assumed to escape rumen degradation and was absorbable in the intestine was higher in amino acids and methionine, and lower in non-amino acid-N and glutamic acid and proline compared with protein in the feedstuff.

Sixty piglets selected after weaning at 4 weeks of age were assigned to five replicates of twelve animals each. In each of these replicates the postprandial variations in serum pteroylglutamate after the ingestion of twelve sources of dietary pteroylglutamic acid were recorded twice weekly at 10 and 16 weeks of age. In six of these sources of pteroylglutamic acid the chemically pure form of the vitamin was incorporated into a semi-purified diet at concentrations varying between 0 and 1·0 mg/kg. The six other sources were provided by a soya-bean meal, rapeseed meal, maize, barley, wheat, and a commercial vitamin premix. The concentrations of pteroylglutamates measured by radioimmunoassay in the different feedstuffs were, in most cases, far from the values reported in the literature, except for maize. Indeed, while total pteroylglutamates in barley, wheat and rapeseed meal were lower by 35–56%. 17–50% and 60% respectively compared with references values, the corresponding values for soya-bean meal ranged from one third to twice as much. The area under the curve (AUC) of the pre- and postprandial (1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 h) serum pteroylglutamate following ingestion of increasing levels of chemically pure pteroylmono- glutamic acid was used to derive a regression for the 100% bioavailability of dietary pteroylglutamic acid. The corresponding AUC for the feedstuff sources of pteroylglutamates were used in the regression to determine the proportion of bioavailable pteroylglutamates out of total pteroylglutamates measured in these ingredients. No relationship (P 0·66) was found between the level of chemically pure dietary pteroylmonoglutamic acid and the postprandial AUC. In fact, there was no significant (P 0·11) increase in the postprandial concentration of serum pteroylglutamate for any of the pteroylglutamate sources used except for wheat. Moreover, values tended (P 0·08) to be lower at 5 and 7 h postfeeding except for wheat and barley. It was hypothesized that this decrease is probably linked to the postfeeding variation in bile secretion which drains considerable amounts of circulatory pteroylglutamates. The results of the present experiment indicate that further research on analytical procedure is needed in order to provide a reliable method for measuring concentrations of pteroylglutamic acid in different sources of a given feedstuff used in pig feeding. In addition to this analytical concern, the measurement of the proportion of bioavailable pteroylglutamic acid in feedstuffs for pigs using postprandial variations of serum pteroylglutamates appears to be technically hazardous.

The availability of soyabean meal for animal feed use in Asia and the Pacific is low. The potential usefulness of a wide variety of protein-rich plant materials which could replace soyabean meal in poultry feed formulations is examined in this review. These materials are classified into four groups: oilseed meals; grain legumes; green meals and miscellaneous. Their nutritional values are discussed with reference to amino acid profiles. The presence of anti-nutritional factors and the resulting constraints on their use are also considered.

Reliable data on tilapia nutrition and feeding are scarce. In the best documented field, that of protein requirement, current data show good agreement with available information on coldwater and warmwater fishes. Various feedstuffs have been used to satisfy the protein needs, but the effects of variations of their quality have not been sufficiently studied. The main problem lies in the assessment of the effects of natural food in open rearing structures; thus there are some discrepancies with the results obtained in laboratory. More insight on in situ nutrition of pond fish, as well as the management of the feedstuffs and feeding practices is needed.
