We report the results of new survey of star-forming regions in the outer Galaxy at Galactocentric radius of more than 13.5 kpc, where the environment is significantly different from that in the solar neighborhood.

In recent years, all-sky surveys have uncovered a new and interesting population of young (≈10–200 Myr), nearby substellar objects. Many of these objects have inferred masses and temperatures that overlap those of directly imaged exoplanets. These young brown dwarfs provide valuable analogs to young, dusty exoplanets in a context where detailed spectroscopic observations across a broad range of wavelengths and at high S/N are possible. How do the temperatures inferred by atmospheric models and evolutionary models compare? Can we determine the formation mechanism of a young planetary-mass object? How well do we understand the role that disequilibrium chemistry and dust clouds play in the atmospheres of these objects? We review the successes and challenges in determining the fundamental properties (mass, log(g), effective temperature) of young substellar objects, both brown dwarfs and gas-giant exoplanets.

Multi-wavelength analyses of an increasing number of post-AGB stars reveal that they constitute a more inhomogeneous population of stars than previously thought. The new data collected in the last few years allow us to study these sources with unprecedented spatial resolution and to extend our spectroscopic knowledge in a systematic way to the infrared for the first time, where crucial information is contained on the chemical composition of the gas and dust in their circumstellar shells. The overall infrared properties derived from ISO and Spitzer data can be used to trace the mass loss history and the chemical evolution of the ejected material. The new results impose severe observational constraints on current nucleosynthesis models and suggest that the evolution is determined not only by the initial mass but also by the metallicity of the progenitor star. Post-AGB samples are likely to grow in the near future with the advent of new data from space facilities like Spitzer or Akari. Studies of post-AGB stars in the galactic halo, the Magellanic Clouds and other galaxies of the Local Group will certainly improve our knowledge on the evolutionary connections between AGB stars and PNe.

We are conducting a survey of several regions of high-mass star formation to assess their content and structure. The observations include spitzer observations, ground-based optical and near-IR imaging surveys, and optical and IR spectra of objects and locations in the molecular clouds. The goal of the survey is to gain a better understanding of the processes involved in high mass star formation by determining the characteristics of the stars detected in these regions and investigating the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) environment in which these stars form. In this contribution, we present results on the identification and spatial analysis of young stars in three clusters, W5/AFGL 4029, S255, and S235. First we show how the IRAC data are used to roughly segregate young stars according to their mid-infrared colors, into two groups corresponding the SED class I and class II young stellar objects. Then using the IRAC data in combination with 2MASS, we show how more young stars can be identified. Finally, we examine the spatial distributions of young stars in these clusters and find a range of morphologies and of peak surface densities.

We present initial results from a survey of the Orion A and B molecular clouds made with the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. This survey encompasses a total of 5.6 square degrees with the sensitivity to detect objects below the hydrogen burning limit at an age of 1 Myr. These observations cover a number of known star forming regions, from the massive star forming clusters in the Orion Nebula and NGC 2024, to small groups of low mass stars in the L1641. We combine the IRAC photometry with photometry from the 2MASS point source catalog and use the resulting seven band data to identify stars with infrared excesses due to dusty disks and envelopes. Using the presence of an infrared excess as an indicator of youth, we show the distribution of young stars and protostars in the two molecular clouds. We find that roughly half of the stars are found in dense clusters surrounding the two regions of recent massive star formation in the Orion clouds, NGC 2024 and the Orion Nebula.

Despite its importance, the Galactic Bulge and its globular cluster (GC) system in particular, remain relatively unexplored due to high foreground extinction and severely crowded field populations. The new generation of high resolution IR spectrographs opens new and unique perspectives to obtain detailed abundances in the Bulge field and GCs. Using the NIRSPEC spectrograph at Keck II, high resolution, echelle spectra in the range 1.5–1.8 micron of bright giants in the Baade's window and other fields closer to the Galactic center as well as in a sample of 10 Bulge GCs have been obtained. We present the results of our abundance analysis of Fe, Al, 12C, 13C, O, and other α-elements, by using full spectral synthesis techniques.

The High Resolution Telescope and Spectrograph (HRTS) instrument has obtained broadband spectroheliograph images at 1600 Å of the solar temperature minimum region. I discuss HRTS observations of quiet areas and their relation with magnetic fields, five minute oscillations, and heating. The brightness temperature of solar fine structure elements composing the supergranular network is found to be linearly proportional to the local absolute value of magnetic field strength. There is evidence for a 250-s period oscillation occurring in 10-arcsec scale patches, which however is energetically unimportant to the local heating budget. A general nonmagnetic background heating and five minute oscillations occur globally, while the network bright points occur in magnetic regions, heated perhaps from partial dissipation of Alfvén waves (whose energy flux is linearly proportional to B) in individual elemental 1500-G (at the photosphere) flux tubes which expand to form the temperature minimum fine structure bright points.
