Gesine Schiewer’s chapter examines approaches within intercultural German studies, which combine literary studies and communication research, to assess how dialogue competences and intercultural understanding can be trained by working with literary texts. After a presentation of selected research on intercultural communication, language learning and literature as well as a discussion of appropriate communication theories, the chapter examines selected literary texts and their potential for intercultural understanding. This leads to suggestions for applied work in the context of secondary schools, university courses, teacher training and communication training.
