The annelid mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) have been well documented, and phylogenetic analyses based on the mitogenomes provide insightful implications for annelid evolution. However, the mitogenomes of some families remain unknown. Herein, we determined the complete mitogenome of the lugworm Abarenicola claparedi oceanica (15,524 bp), representing the first mitogenome from the family Arenicolidae. The gene order of this species is the same as the various lineages in Sedentaria. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses were performed based on six different datasets, including 43 ingroups (oligochaetes, hirudineans, echiurans and closely related polychaetes) and two outgroups (Siboglinidae), namely, aligned and trimmed datasets consisting of the nucleotide sequences of protein-coding genes (PCGs) and rRNAs, and amino acid sequences of PCGs. Phylogenetic analyses based on the nucleotide sequences yielded trees with better support values than those based on the amino acid sequences. Arenicolidae is clustered with Maldanidae in all analyses. Analyses based on nucleotide sequences confirm the monophyly of Terebellidae, which was paraphyletic in recent mitogenomic phylogenetic studies. We also performed the phylogenetic analysis based on the RY-coding of the nucleotide sequences of PCGs only to yield phylogeny with generally low support values. Additional mitogenome sequences of related ingroup species would be needed to comprehensively understand the phylogenetic relationship, which was not present in this study.

Very little information is available on bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) habitat use in the South-western Atlantic. It is, however, essential in understanding their ecology and to improve conservation management. In this study, habitat use of bottlenose dolphins was examined in Bahía San Antonio, an area frequented by the species. Given the large tidal amplitude and extended intertidal zone in this bay, special focus was given to the intertidal vs subtidal habitat use patterns. Bottlenose dolphins were observed in only half of the surveyed area, with on average 1 dolphin group encountered per 100 km surveyed. All dolphin groups were seen in shallow waters <10 m deep. GLM analyses showed that especially during high tide, depth had an important effect on the dolphin encounter rate, with most dolphin groups encountered in the intertidal zone. While in the intertidal zone, most dolphin groups were observed to be engaged in surface feeding activities. The presented data indicate dolphins remained in shallow waters, and moved to the intertidal zone during high tide where they appear to find feeding opportunities. This information is believed to be of high value in understanding this population's ecological needs, and essential when aiming to improve marine conservation efforts at times of increased anthropogenic pressures in the area.

The coastline of Tabasco State in the Gulf of Mexico represents a highly deteriorated ecosystem, where densely populated human settlements and large offshore petroleum developments are negatively affecting the marine biodiversity. Previous work on marine ascomycetes reported that in the Gulf of Mexico the diversity of these fungi might be threatened by anthropogenic activities. Therefore we evaluated the diversity of marine ascomycetes in this area, and registered 19 taxa. Ceriosporopsis capillacea was recorded for the first time for Mexico. The highest diversity was obtained in the beach of Sánchez Magallanes, which receives a great quantity and diversity of organic remains originating from El Carmen/Machona mangrove forests via the Santa Ana mouth, benefiting the proliferation of marine fungi. The lowest diversity was documented in the beach of Paraíso, which is close to the delta of one of the most polluted rivers in Mexico and to off-shore oil extraction platforms. We found a significant correlation between the community composition and abundance, implying that the overall abundance is defined by the community structure, perhaps as a result of competition. Additionally, our results indicated that there is no relationship between the grain size and the biodiversity observed.

Echinoderm samples were collected from Hormuz Island in 2010–2011. The sampling was based on a qualitative survey, conducted in intertidal areas. The collected specimens were transferred to a laboratory for identification according to the valid literature. In this study, ten species of echinoderms were collected, including: six Asteroidea (Astropecten monoacanthus, Luidia hardwicki, Aquilonastra iranica, Aquilonastra samyni, Astropecten polyacanthus pheragmorus, Astropecten polyacanthus polyacanthus); two Ophiuroidea (Macrophiothrix elongate, Ophiocoma scalopendarina); and three Echinoidea (Echinometra mathaei, Echinodiscus bisperforatus, Echinodiscus auritus).

This study aimed to determine the potential impact of an oil spill on intertidal meiofauna at a clean, sandy beach in Korea. This objective was accomplished by examining changes in the structure of meiofaunal assemblages after a controlled oil spill of different concentrations on the beach. The concentration of total petroleum hydrocabon (TPH) in the experimental plots after oil application was expectedly higher for the first 4 d compared to before oil application. The TPH concentrations decreased at a faster rate in the first 4 d, and then progressively. The sharp decline in meiofaunal density in the experimental plots during the first 4 d after the spill might be attributed to the short-term toxic effects of the oil. This suggestion is supported by a significant negative interaction of the TPH on meiofaunal density during the study period. The period of low density of meiofauna also coincided with the maximum concentration of TPH in the sediment. The multivariate indices proved to be highly efficient, showing that samples contaminated with oil had high TPH concentrations, and were partially separated in terms of meiofaunal communities from samples before oil application or samples with low TPH concentrations. The structure of the meiofaunal communities in the experimental plots was similar before and 1 month after oil application. However, the density of meiofauna sharply decreased immediately after oil application in the experiment plots. Furthermore, the meiofaunal density recovered slowly as time passed.

The aim of this study was to compare the population structure of the invasive bivalve Isognomon bicolor in three different areas on the coast of Rio de Janeiro State and to verify its temporal variation. All the areas presented high densities, reaching more than 1000 live individuals per 100 cm2. The number of dead individuals and recruits was higher in Ilha do Brandão (Angra dos Reis) than in the other areas. The individuals sampled at Praia Vermelha (Rio de Janeiro) presented the highest maximum and mean sizes, compared to those found at Ilha do Brandão. In this area, vermetid molluscs are dominant and build a complex reef structure where only a few individuals of I. bicolor can really grow.
