Negative dependence of sequences of random variables is often an interesting characteristic of their distribution, as well as a useful tool for studying various asymptotic results, including central limit theorems, Poisson approximations, the rate of increase of the maximum, and more. In the study of probability models of tournaments, negative dependence of participants’ outcomes arises naturally, with application to various asymptotic results. In particular, the property of negative orthant dependence was proved in several articles for different tournament models, with a special proof for each model. In this note we unify these results by proving a stronger property, negative association, a generalization leading to a very simple proof. We also present a natural example of a knockout tournament where the scores are negatively orthant dependent but not negatively associated. The proof requires a new result on a preservation property of negative orthant dependence that is of independent interest.

We study negative association for mixed sampled point processes and show that negative association holds for such processes if a random number of their points fulfils the ultra log-concave (ULC) property. We connect the negative association property of point processes with directionally convex dependence ordering, and show some consequences of this property for mixed sampled and determinantal point processes. Some applications illustrate the general theory.

In this article we study a number of collisions concerning a simple occupancy problem with unequal probabilities. Using combinatorial arguments and negative associations of random variables, we have several limit theorems, namely, a weak law of large numbers and a Poisson law of small numbers including the Chen-Stein estimate.

We present a minimum counterexample to the conjecture that a negatively associated random variable has an ultra-log-concave rank sequence. The rank sequence does not in fact even need to be unimodal.

Consider a sequence {Xk, k ≥ 1} of random variables on (−∞, ∞). Results on the asymptotic tail probabilities of the quantities , and S(n) = max0 ≤ k ≤ nSk, with X0 = 0 and n ≥ 1, are well known in the case where the random variables are independent with a heavy-tailed (subexponential) distribution. In this paper we investigate the validity of these results under more general assumptions. We consider extensions under the assumptions of having long-tailed distributions (the class L) and having the class D ∩ L, where D is the class of distribution functions with dominatedly varying tails. Some results are also given in the case where Xk, k ≥ 1, are not necessarily identically distributed and/or independent.

Define the non-overlapping return time of a block of a random process to be the number of blocks that pass by before the block in question reappears. We prove a central limit theorem based on these return times. This result has applications to entropy estimation, and to the problem of determining if digits have come from an independent, equidistributed sequence. In the case of an equidistributed sequence, we use an argument based on negative association to prove convergence under conditions weaker than those required in the general case.

Let {X k , k ≥ 1} be a sequence of independent, identically distributed nonnegative random variables with common distribution function F and finite expectation μ > 0. Under the assumption that the tail probability is consistently varying as x tends to infinity, this paper investigates precise large deviations for both the partial sums S n and the random sums S N(t), where N(·) is a counting process independent of the sequence {X k , k ≥ 1}. The obtained results improve some related classical ones. Applications to a risk model with negatively associated claim occurrences and to a risk model with a doubly stochastic arrival process (extended Cox process) are proposed.
