In 1965, Browder proved the existence of a common fixed point for commuting families of nonexpansive mappings acting on nonempty bounded closed convex subsets of uniformly convex Banach spaces. The purpose of this paper is to extend this result to left amenable semigroups of nonexpansive mappings.

We prove the existence of common fixed points for monotone contractive and monotone nonexpansive semigroups of nonlinear mappings acting in Banach spaces equipped with partial order. We also discuss some applications to differential equations and dynamical systems.

In this paper we prove Caristi’s fixed point theorem using only purely metric techniques.

In this paper, we generalize monotone operators, their resolvents and the proximal point algorithm to complete CAT(0) spaces. We study some properties of monotone operators and their resolvents. We show that the sequence generated by the inexact proximal point algorithm $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$-converges to a zero of the monotone operator in complete CAT(0) spaces. A strong convergence (convergence in metric) result is also presented. Finally, we consider two important special cases of monotone operators and we prove that they satisfy the range condition (see Section 4 for the definition), which guarantees the existence of the sequence generated by the proximal point algorithm.

We define a class of nonlinear mappings which is properly larger than the class of nonexpansive mappings. We also give a fixed point theorem for this new class of mappings.

In this paper, we investigate the common approximate fixed point sequences of nonexpansive semigroups of nonlinear mappings ${{\left\{ {{T}_{t}} \right\}}_{t\ge 0}}$, i.e., a family such that ${{T}_{0}}\left( x \right)\,=\,x,\,{{T}_{s+t}}\,=\,{{T}_{s}}\left( {{T}_{t}}\left( x \right) \right)$, where the domain is a metric space $\left( M,\,d \right)$. In particular, we prove that under suitable conditions the common approximate fixed point sequences set is the same as the common approximate fixed point sequences set of two mappings from the family. Then we use the Ishikawa iteration to construct a common approximate fixed point sequence of nonexpansive semigroups of nonlinear mappings.

We show that the direct sum $\mathop{({X}_{1} \oplus \cdots \oplus {X}_{r} )}\nolimits_{\psi } $ with a strictly monotone norm has the weak fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings whenever $M({X}_{i} )\gt 1$ for each $i= 1, \ldots , r$. In particular, $\mathop{({X}_{1} \oplus \cdots \oplus {X}_{r} )}\nolimits_{\psi } $ enjoys the fixed point property if Banach spaces ${X}_{i} $ are uniformly nonsquare. This combined with the earlier results gives a definitive answer for $r= 2$: a direct sum ${X}_{1} {\mathop{\oplus }\nolimits}_{\psi } {X}_{2} $ of uniformly nonsquare spaces with any monotone norm has the fixed point property. Our results are extended to asymptotically nonexpansive mappings in the intermediate sense.

This paper gives a characterization of nonexpansive mappings from the unit sphere of ℓβ (Γ) onto the unit sphere of ℓβ (Δ) where 0<β≤1. By this result, we prove that such mappings are in fact isometries and give an affirmative answer to Tingley’s problem in ℓβ (Γ) spaces. We also show that the same result holds for expansive mappings between unit spheres of ℓβ (Γ) spaces without the surjectivity assumption.

Moudafi and Maingé [Towards viscosity approximations of hierarchical fixed-point problems, Fixed Point Theory Appl. (2006), Art. ID 95453, 10pp] and Xu [Viscosity method for hierarchical fixed point approach to variational inequalities, Taiwanese J. Math.13(6) (2009)] studied an implicit viscosity method for approximating solutions of variational inequalities by solving hierarchical fixed point problems. The approximate solutions are a net (xs,t) of two parameters s,t∈(0,1), and under certain conditions, the iterated lim t→0lim s→0xs,t exists in the norm topology. Moudafi, Maingé and Xu stated the problem of convergence of (xs,t) as (s,t)→(0,0) jointly in the norm topology. In this paper we further study the behaviour of the net (xs,t); in particular, we give a negative answer to this problem.

We characterize surjective nonexpansive mappings between unit spheres of ℒ∞(Γ)-type spaces. We show that such mappings turn out to be isometries and can be extended to linear isometries on the whole space ℒ∞(Γ).

In this paper, we introduce an iterative scheme using an extragradient method for finding a common element of the set of solutions of a generalized equilibrium problem, the set of fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping and the set of the variational inequality for a monotone, Lipschitz-continuous mapping. We obtain a weak convergence theorem for three sequences generated by this process. Based on this result, we also obtain several interesting results. The results in this paper generalize and extend some well-known weak convergence theorems in the literature.

In [6] and [7], Krasnosel'skiĭ proved several fundamental fixed point principles for operators leaving invariant a cone in a Banach space. In [9], Nussbaum extended one of the results, the theorem about compression and expansion of a cone, to k-setcontraction maps, k < 1. Other versions for completely continuous maps were given by Fournier-Peitgen [2] and G. Fournier [1].

The purpose of this paper is to generalise some of these results to upper semi continuous multivalued maps which are K-set contractions, k < 1, and differentiable at the origin and infinity.

We first prove a nonlinear ergodic theorem for nonexpansive semigroups without convexity in a Hilbert space. Further we prove a fixed point theorem for non-expansive semigroups without convexity which generalizes simultaneously fixed point theorems for left amenable semigroups and left reversible semigroups.

A closed convex subset X of a Banach space E is said to have (i) asymptotic normal structure if for each bounded closed convex subset C of X containing more than one point and for each sequence in C satisfying ‖xn − xn + 1‖ → 0 as n → ∞, there is a point x ∈ C such that ; (ii) close-to-normal structure if for each bounded closed convex subset C of X containing more than one point, there is a point x ∈ C such that ‖x − y‖ < diam‖ ‖(C) for all y ∈ C While asymptotic normal structure and close-to-normal structure are both implied by normal structure, they are not related. The example that a reflexive Banach space which has asymptotic normal structure but not close-to normal structure provides us a non-empty weakly compact convex set which does not have close-to-normal structure. This answers an open question posed by Wong in [9] and hence also provides us a Kannan map defined on a weakly compact convex set which does not have a fixed point.
