In this paper, we consider the problem of sustainable harvesting. We explain how the manager maximizes his/her profit according to the quantity of natural resource available in a harvesting area and under the constraint of penalties and fines when the quota is exceeded. We characterize the optimal values and some optimal strategies using a verification result. We then show by numerical examples that this optimal strategy is better than naive ones. Moreover, we define a level of fines which insures the double objective of the sustainable harvesting: a remaining quantity of available natural resource to insure its sustainability and an acceptable income for the manager.

We study de Finetti's optimal dividend problem, also known as the optimal harvesting problem, in the dual model. In this model, the firm value is affected both by continuous fluctuations and by upward directed jumps. We use a fixed point method to show that the solution of the optimal dividend problem with jumps can be obtained as the limit of a sequence of stochastic control problems for a diffusion. In each problem, the optimal dividend strategy is of barrier type, and the rate of convergence of the barrier and the corresponding value function is exponential.

We first investigate linear size-structured population models with spacial diffusion. Existence of a unique mild solution is established. Then we consider a harvesting problem for linear size-structured models with diffusion and show the existence of an optimal harvesting effort to maximize the total price or total harvest.
