Indications from Gaia data release 2 are that the tip of the red giant branch (a population II standard candle related to the helium flash in low mass stars) is close to –4 in absolute I magnitude in the Cousins photometric system. Our sample is high-latitude southern stars from the thick disk and inner halo, and our result is consistent with longstanding findings from globular clusters, whose distances were calibrated with RR Lyrae stars. As the Gaia mission proceeds, there is every reason to think an accurate Galactic geometric calibration of tip of the red giant branch will be a significant outcome for the extragalactic distance scale.

Our recent studies based on a large sample of K giants with Hipparcos parallaxes and spectroscopic analysis resulted more than a dozen new Li-rich K giants including few super Li-rich ones. Most of the Li-rich K giants including the new ones appear to occur at the luminosity bump in the HR diagram. However, one can’t rule out the possibility of overlap with the clump region where core He-burning K giants reside post He-flash at the tip of RGB. It is important to distinguish field K giants of clump from the bump region in the HR diagram to understand clues for Li production in K giants. In this poster, we explore whether GAIA parallaxes improve to disentangle clump from bump region, more precisely.

About three years after Gaia was set into orbit, the first release of Gaia data, DR1, has been published by ESA and DPAC. Gaia’s first archive contains the results from the analysis of the initial 14 months of mission data. Outstandingly, it includes TGAS, Gaia-Tycho2 astrometric solution for about 2 million stars up to visible magnitude around 11.5.

In addition to the five parameter astrometric solution for the sky (positions, parallaxes and proper motions), future Gaia data releases will provide the spectral energy distributions from 330-1050 nm, together with radial velocities, for sources brighter than visible magnitude 16. Within this context, the relevance of Gaia data for the study of PN is be briefly presented.
