Despite improvements in zoo housing and management conditions over the last years, zoo animals may still present undesirable behaviours, such as aggression, stereotypies, boredom and a general absence of natural behaviours. In order to improve animal welfare, researchers are constantly looking for tools to enrich the environment and increase sensory information. Semiochemicals carry important information and are already in use for domestic and wild species. The aim of the current study was to evaluate their impact on the behaviour of captive lions. The behaviour of 18 African lions (Panthera leo) living at Aqualeon Safari Park, Tarragona, Spain was recorded during four different experimental conditions: (i) no intervention (baseline); (ii) Cat Facial Pheromone F3 in gel-diffuser blocks; (iii) Cat Appeasing Pheromone (CAP) in gel-diffuser blocks; and (iv) placebo blocks. The schedule consisted of six days with exposure to each condition and three days without. It was repeated twice. The statistical analysis showed a number of differences: animals exhibited longer periods of ‘follow’ behaviour when exposed to F3 than control or placebo; and longer periods of ‘play’ behaviour during F3 than control, placebo or CAP, although there was also a significant difference between CAP and placebo vs control. The lions also ‘ran’ more during F3 than during all other conditions and ‘walked’ more during F3 than during control or CAP; walking time was also significantly higher during placebo and CAP vs control. These results suggest that semiochemicals affect the behaviour of lions in captivity and might be considered and studied more thoroughly as potential tools to improve welfare.

Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer 1778), commonly named the poultry red mite (PRM), is considered to be the most harmful ectoparasite in poultry farms in Europe. This species feeds on the blood of laying hens, but spends most of its time hidden in cracks and crevices around hen nests. To control PRM populations in poultry houses, chemical pesticides are currently used; however, concern is growing regarding the harmful residues found in eggs and hens, along with the increased resistance of mites against several compounds. Alternatives to synthetic compounds are now being explored, including vaccines, biological control, physical control and semiochemical control based on the chemical ecology of PRM. This review focused on the different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) identified from D. gallinae and other mite species that have been discovered to control them. Pheromones (aggregation pheromone, sex pheromone and alarm pheromone) and kairomones promoting attraction behaviour in D. gallinae and other mite species are presented, while VOCs from essential oils and plant extracts with repellent properties are also explored. Finally, devices using VOCs on PRM in the field are described, with devices that have been tested on other Acari species being mentioned as potential directions for the future control of PRM.

In the Ecuadorian cloud forest, males of the parasitoid braconid wasp Napo townsendi Shaw displayed facultative lekking, appearing both singly and in groups of 2–7 on the leaf tops of various plant species. To attract females, they constantly employed a stereotypical, spread-winged calling behaviour, apparently releasing a sex pheromone combed from the lateral metasomal exocrine glands and applied to the wings and hind legs. Aggregated males used the same posture in conspecific agonistic displays, often leading to physical fighting. While female wasps were attracted to and mated with displaying singletons, they also made a choice among aggregated males. When females approached, males vibrated their wings in a brief courtship and mounted. Details of copulation behaviour, which lasted on an average of 3–4 min, are described. Without apparent physical weaponry, the displaying wasps successfully warded off attacks from an assortment of predatory arthropods, particularly salticid spiders. We present case studies of repeated unsuccessful predation attempts by salticids. Here, we postulate that calling and release of sex pheromone may double as both an intrasexual agonistic display and an aposematic advisory to predators that the wasps employ a chemical defence.

The present study was designed to identify the volatile constituents across the oestrous cycle of bovine in order to detect oestrous-specific chemical signal. The bovine saliva was extracted with diethyl ether (1 : 1 ratio, v/v) and analysed by gas chromatography-linked mass spectrometry. Numerous compounds were identified during oestrous cycle of bovine saliva. Among these, the compounds, namely, trimethylamine, acetic acid, phenol 4-propyl, pentanoic acid and propionic acid were specific to oestrous stage. The behaviour assay revealed that the compound, trimethylamine, is involved in attracting the male animal. The result concludes that the trimethylamine is considered as a putative oestrous-specific salivary chemo-signal in the bovine.

Newborn rabbits depend on a daily nursing interaction with the mother to gain milk and to survive. During this interaction, they localise and seize the nipples displaying a typical behaviour triggered by maternal odour cues. The mammary pheromone constitutes such a signal in domestic rabbits: it elicits sucking-related movements in more than 90% of the pups. However, some newborns remain unresponsive to the presentation of the pheromone, even pups apparently healthy and highly motivated to suck. The main goal of the present study was therefore to explore the link between the unresponsiveness of rabbit pups to the mammary pheromone and their growth and survival in breeding conditions. To that end, 293 newborns from 30 litters were tested for their head searching-oral grasping responses to the mammary pheromone on days 1 and 3, and their milk intake and mortality were followed up from days 1 to 21. It was hypothesised that unresponsive newborns would have subsequent difficulties in finding nipples, sucking and surviving. Early weight and success in milk intake were further considered as mediating factors in growth and viability. The results showed that pups that were unresponsive to the mammary pheromone on day 1 were less successful in gaining milk and had a higher rate of mortality than the responsive pups. However, this impact was modulated by the weight of pups: it appeared only in the lightest newborns. Moreover, this impact vanished on day 3. On the other hand, the pup weight and sucking success on days 1 to 3 strongly influenced viability and growth during the period extending from days 1 to 21. Taken together, the results show that the day-1 responsiveness of rabbit pups to the mammary pheromone can be considered as an indicator of individual viability in pups having a small weight (<48 g on day 1). The predictive validity of the pups’ pheromonal reactivity seems however time-limited as it works only during the first, but crucial, postnatal days.

This review addresses the role of compounds secreted into the external environment that mediate important aspects of tick behaviour. Known as semiochemicals, these information-containing compounds include pheromones (used for conspecific communication), allomones (defence secretions) and kairomones (used for host identification and location). An impressive body of knowledge has accumulated concerning the identification of the compounds that comprise these semiochemicals. Pheromones are the best known and intensively studied, including arrestment (=assembly) pheromones, attraction–aggregation–attachment (AAA) pheromones and sex pheromones. Arrestment behaviour is mediated by contact with excreta from other ticks. In contrast, aggregating and sexual behaviours comprise a hierarchy of responses to different types of chemical compounds that must be recognized in a sequential order to achieve the end result. Ixodid ticks also produce an allomone that protects against certain insect predators. Finally, ticks use kairomones for host identification, e.g. volatiles such as CO2 and NH3 and various oils such as glandular secretions from deer. Knowledge of tick pheromones has been used to develop innovative new technologies for tick control. These products incorporate tick pheromones and small amounts of pesticide to attract and kill ticks on their hosts or in vegetation. The kairomones and the tick allomone also may be of interest for use in controlling ticks.

We demonstrate that the males of the peripatopsid Euperipatoides rowelli secrete a pheromone from crural papillae, which acts as an attractant to both males and females of the species. Patterns of colonization of decomposing logs and differences in sex ratio between incipient vs established populations indicate that males are the initial dispersers and colonizers, finding suitable log habitats in an exploratory fashion, while females subsequently colonize logs. This results in a disproportionately high frequency of males in newly colonized logs, followed by a gradual increase in female proportion. We argue that females use the aggregating pheromone secreted by males to target appropriate rotting log microhabitats, resulting in a clumped distribution of females compared to a more random distribution for males among recently colonized logs. This mode of colonization reduces the time that animals, especially females, spend outside the safety of suitable logs, and the risk-taking strategy of male exploration may explain the marked sex ratio bias in favour of females in the population. Rapid and non-random dispersal may also account for the contradictory evidence of unexpectedly high rates of colonization of new logs, yet a paucity of animals in leaf litter samples. The possibility that pheromone trails play a part in the dispersal process is discussed.

Recent studies on the chemical ecology of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, have unravelled a rich and complex system of pheromonal and other semiochemical-mediated communication in this insect. The key pheromones associated with such behavioural processes as social cohesion and communal egg-laying have been characterised. The semiochemical bases of such physiological processes as maturation of solitarious insects before the arrival of seasonal rains, development of gregarious traits in crowded solitarious insects, development of maturation synchrony in gregarious insects, and maternal transfer of gregarious characters to the offspring are better understood. Desert locust semiochemicals are finding two principal uses: as tools for studying the processes associated with gregarisation and, therefore, for elucidating the eco-physiological mechanisms underlying the development of locust outbreaks; and as agents for interfering or reversing the process of gregarisation. The status of this research and its implication for the development of novel ecologically friendly tactics for the management of different locust species are highlighted.

The ultrastructure of specialized sternal gland hairs from the brown antechinus Antechinus stuartii was studied using a scanning electron microscope. The centre of the sternal gland of male A. stuartii possesses short and stiff hairs that are capable of holding a large mass of lipids. The morphology of these hairs differs from those of the dorsal region of the same individual and sexual dimorphism is observed. The osmetrichia of the sternal gland region of male A. stuartii have flared and thickly packed cuticular scales. These scales differ morphologically from the large flattened conical scales of hair from the female sternal region and male dorsum. The surface of the osmetrichia is soaked with the red, oily secretion of the sternal gland, and the angled scales of the cortex have been modified into special ridged chambers which store the glandular secretions. We suggest that in A. stuartii the unique cuticular structural modifications may serve in the retention and delayed oxidation of olfactory cues at the time of breeding.

Studies were conducted from 1993–1995 at Samanko, Mali, on rearing and pheromone trapping of Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and on the insecticidal effect of extracts of Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae) on B. fusca and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). A technique for mass rearingof B.fusca larvae on a chickpea and sorghum leaf-based meridic diet was developed, requiring about 10 g of diet per larva. An average of 7.3 successive generations were obtained per year. Pupal and larval mortalities were less than 15%. Oviposition was obtained on artificial substrates, with a fecundity of 300–500 eggs per female. Laboratory tests were conducted with diets in which extracts of nuts of J. curcas had been added. A 100% larvicidal effect was obtained with B. fusca and S. calamistis at 0.01% and 1% crude oil concentration respectively, and with 0.025% of the phorbol ester fraction on S. cahmistis. Trapping experiments using traps made of aluminum trays baited with synthetic pheromone showed that B. fusca male moths flights could be satisfactorily monitored. An improvement of traps and/or pheromone effectiveness is, however, necessary before their use as a control method.

Two experiments were conducted to determine whether female to female influences could reduce the duration of the post-partum anoestrous period in beef cows. In experiment 1, cows were housed from calving, either in individual stalls, which precluded physical contact with other cows (treatment I; no. = 19) or as a group, with a cow in oestrus introduced to the group twice per week (treatment G; no. = 18). The percentage of cows cycling by day 50 post partum was similar for both treatments, but at 91 days post partum was significantly higher (P <0·05) in the G than in the I cows (89% v. 58%).

In experiment 2, cows were housed in individual stalls from calving and exposed twice per week to either cervical mucus collected from cows in oestrus (treatment M; no. = 21) or distilled water (treatment W; no. = 24). The percentage of cows cycling by 70 days post partum was similar in both treatments but by 130 days there were significantly more (P <0·05) M cows cycling (86% v. 58%). In neither experiment were LH profiles at 22,43 or 64 days influenced by treatment.

The results indicate that cervical mucus of cows in oestrus contains pheromone(s) which can reduce the postpartum anoestrous period in beef cows with extended anoestrous periods.

A comprehensive review of the major investigations on the biology and ecology of ticks of Africa reported in scientific journals in the decade 1980–1989 is undertaken. While there have been remarkable advances within the decade on research on feeding habits and patterns of ticks as well as diurnal and seasonal activities, many important areas of research were neglected. These include tick embryogenesis, development and survival under natural conditions, tick modelling, the phenomenon of host's natural resistance to tick infestation, pheromone and biochemical studies and field sampling of ticks. The review also shows that laboratory studies on tick biological systems are scanty in East Africa and the need for greater tick ecological research in West Africa is stressed.

The review shows that in the decade 1980–1989, exotic Bos taurus breeds were predominantly used for experimentation on African ticks and the need to change focus to indigenous B. indicus cattle breeds for experimentation is highlighted. Attention is also drawn to the importance of researchers on African ticks to undertake long term sustainable research with clearly defined goals which can have quantifiable impact on tick control in Africa.

Pheromones have been successfully used on a large scale for control of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella, by mating disruption in Egypt and Pakistan using various slow release formulations. Similar formulations are being developed for control of other cotton bollworms, Earias insulana and E. vittella. Small-scale trials are in progress to evaluate pheromone formulations for control of sugar-cane borers, Chilo sacchariphagus and C. auricilius in Mauritius and India, and the tropical warehouse moth, Ephestia camelia, as a pest of stored cocoa in Brazil. Traps baited with the pheromone of the African armyworm, Spodoptera exempta, have been extensively used in Eastern and Southern Africa as the basis of a forecasting system of pest incidence.

Traps baited with the synthetic aggregation pheromone of the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus, have been developed and are in use in E and W Africa for detection and monitoring of this pest of stored grain.

The effects of larval population density and food quality on the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, were compared with investigations of other migratory noctuids. Crowded larvae of the velvetbean caterpillar responded with: (1) an increase in the degree of dark pigmentation; (2) a decrease in larval, pupal and adult size; (3) a prolongation of the larval stage and a decrease in weight gain in the ultimate stadium; and (4) low juvenile hormone and juvenile hormone esterase haemolymph titres.

The effects of flight, throughout a 4 hr flight period, on the haemolymph titres and whole body contents of carbohydrate and lipid are presented for the velvetbean caterpillar and discussed relative to other noctuid moths. Total carbohydrate concentration decreased during the first 30–45 min of flight, and total fatty acid concentration increased during the first 30–60 min of flight, after which it declined and stabilized at preflight levels. Lipid reserves and the small amount of lipid depletion after long periods of flight indicated that velvetbean caterpillar adults are capable of making long distance movements in which lipid is the principal flight fuel.

Juvenile hormone regulated the effect of density on larval colour, size and growth rate. Applications of juvenile hormone to crowded larvae increased the proportion of the lighter (green), larger and faster developing phase. This hormone action suggests that the juvenile hormone titre of crowded larvae is lower than that of uncrowded larvae.

Genetic differentiation among populations of velvetbean caterpillars suggests that south-central United States populations originate from overwintering populations in Mexico or south Texas. A system has been developed, using pheromone-baited bucket-type traps, to investigate the population dynamics and migration of the velvetbean caterpillar in Louisiana and Texas.

The importance of maximum rates of insemination in female tsetse is emphasized in relation to their low rate of reproduction and to the possibility that density dependent regulation of tsetse populations may not be as rigorous as in many oviparous insects. Observations on the mating behaviour of tsetse are described and its regulation by sex pheromones which serve to identify females of the species is discussed. Laboratory and field experiments have shown that the sexual activity of G. m. morsitans males can be manipulated by presentation of synthetic sex pheromone on suitable decoys in the laboratory and in the field. Males that respond to decoys in the field are in the same nutritional state as others which are attracted to the models upon which the decoys are placed and are presumably seeking food. There is no reason to believe that sexual activity is restricted to a particular section of the population, and given a choice, it is proposed that mating is preferable to feeding in terms of gene survival for the individual male. The durations of copulatory responses are dose dependent and there is some evidence that they are inversely proportional to the frequency of encounters with decoys and hence to the density of flies. Techniques for the reduction of tsetse populations using sex pheromones in conjunction with suitable decoys and chemosterilants are being developed. The availability of pheromones in large quantities will permit their testing as sexual confusants among males and may lead to interspecific matings where more than one species occupies the same habitat.
