We deployed jaws of the common thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus) on the seafloor at ~1000 m depth off Monterey California for 8 months. The jaws disintegrated, with all the hyaline cartilage disappearing, leaving some fragments of tessellated cartilage and the teeth. Two different Osedax species, O. packardorum and O. talkovici were found to have bored into the roots of some of the teeth, and were using the dentin pulp, which is rich in collagen, as a food source. The enameloid crowns of the shark teeth and the tessellated cartilage showed no signs of Osedax activity. This is the first demonstration of Osedax exploiting a source of food that is not bone. This raises questions as to the original food source of Osedax ‘bone worms'. Examination for the presence of Osedax in the skeletons and teeth of Mesozoic and possibly even Palaeozoic fossil sharks, bony fish and reptiles is warranted.

The bearded fireworm Hermodice carunculata is a conspicuous omnivorous benthic invertebrate distributed in the wider Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Questions were raised in the past regarding the taxonomic status of amphiatlantic fireworm specimens but subsequent analysis of morphological data with new molecular data reconfirmed the presence of only one species, H. carunculata with amphiatlantic distribution. Hermodice carunculata has been the subject of several taxonomic and genetic studies but there are still questions regarding the genetic diversity and population structure of the species throughout its range. We contributed to the genetic studies of H. carunculata with ~200 new samples from over 20 locations in the Caribbean, Eastern Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. We sequenced the mitochondrial markers Cytochrome c oxidase Subunit I (COI) and Cytochrome b (Cytb) from each polychaete to examine the patterns of genetic diversity of H. carunculata. Our data revealed a significant population structure between the Caribbean H. carunculata including those from Brazil compared with those from the eastern Atlantic (Tenerife, Canary Islands) and eastern Mediterranean (Greece and Malta). We inferred rates of gene flow between eastern and western Atlantic populations by estimating the bidirectional effective migration rate (Nem). We corroborate previous studies indicating the existence of one species with genetically distinct populations. However, the biological significance of the observed population divergence should be evaluated with cross-breeding experiments.

One new species of Caulleryaspis Sendall & Salazar-Vallejo, 2013 (Annelida: Sternaspidae), C. chicosciencei sp. nov., is described based on material collected in north-eastern Brazil. Specimens were collected in muddy bottoms in the Suape estuary complex in 7–16 m water depth. Caulleryaspis chicosciencei sp. nov. differs from the other known species by the combination of the following characters: small size, abundant cirriform papillae evenly distributed throughout body; chaetigers of introvert with 18–21 falcate hooks per bundle; ventral shield without ribs and undeveloped concentric lines, covered by long cirriform papillae with sediment particles adhered; marginal chaetal fascicles include eight lateral shield chaetae in an oval arrangement, and six posterior shield chaetae in slightly curved pattern. Caulleryaspis chicosciencei sp. nov. is the first species of the genus Caulleryaspis described from Brazil and it increases the number of sternaspids recorded from shallow water in the south-western Atlantic Ocean.

In this study we report a new record of a cryptogenic polychaete from southern Africa. The species was found inhabiting sand tubes in intertidal sand flats in the Knysna Estuary on the southern coast of South Africa. Morphological comparisons using light and scanning electron microscopy showed extensive taxonomic similarities with Dipolydora socialis described from other localities and from museum vouchers. In addition, 18S rRNA and COI barcodes were generated for the species. Genetic analysis of the assembled polydorid dataset corroborated the morphological data in delineating the species as a taxonomic unit with >99% genetic similarity to available sequences of D. socialis in the GenBank database. Dipolydora socialis has been reported as having a widespread distribution, and since it can reside within tubes associated with fouling communities or as a shell borer, several vectors may have been responsible for its global spread and introduction to southern Africa. Finally, considering the many cryptic complexes that are currently being uncovered within polychaetes, including spionids, future taxonomic studies should incorporate additional genetic data from other regions of the world to determine whether D. socialis may also be part of a larger species complex.

Moonshine worms are a popular bait species used for fishing. The taxon was not detected during surveys of the macrobenthos conducted in Knysna in the 1940s and 1990s, and was first reported as a harvested bait species in the mid-2000s, suggesting that it appeared for the first time in the estuary in the last three decades. A previous molecular analysis identified the worms as Diopatra aciculata, a species first described from Australia. This study provides an updated detailed morphological description of D. aciculata in South Africa to facilitate future identifications and also investigates the species' distribution and population size in the Knysna Estuary. Specimens were examined by scanning electron, stereo- and compound microscopes. Diopatra aciculata has tubes that protrude from the sediment in sandy areas, often decorated with algae and shell fragments; a large body size, up to 600 mm long and 11.5 mm wide. It has 10–18 rings on ceratophores; 5–10 teeth on pectinate chaetae; uni- and bidentate pseudo-compound falcigers and dorsal cirri approximately as long as branchiae. Diopatra aciculata was detected up to 12 km from the mouth of the Knysna Estuary with densities measured at 18 sampled sites. Statistical analysis retrieved high and low density groups that were significantly different from one another (Kruskal-Wallis H(14, 800) = 376.55; P = 0.01), but distribution of high density sites was patchy. We estimate that the population comprises 20–24 million individuals. Given the size of individual worms and the population estimate, this species can be expected to have significant ecological impacts in the estuary.

Early development of the polychaetes Capitella sp. TF from Tampa, Florida and Capitella sp. TV from Tamiahua Lagoon, Veracruz was studied under laboratory conditions. Our observations indicate that hermaphrodites occur in Capitella sp. TF, but not in Capitella sp. TV. Length and volume of larvae and early juveniles were measured daily. Both species appear to have lecithotrophic development. Sizes and duration of the developmental stages varied widely, as in most known species of Capitella. Characteristic features of Capitella sp. TF include very small hermaphrodites with a distinct dorsal pigmentation pattern and characteristically shaped brood tubes with a centrally thickened region. Embryos forced to abandon the brood did not survive more than 3 days, and handling the brood produced alterations in timing. Ciliated metatrochophores from Capitella sp. TV survived inside the brood without the female for at least 14 days and some larvae hatched and died during settling. Some of these larvae were abnormal, with two rounded protuberances in the two ends. Mortality was high. Fungi and protozoans appeared in the dishes and probably partially induced the production of thicker mucus in the brood tubes, delay in metamorphosis, juvenile mortality, worm length and failure in coupling. Size and duration of the developmental stages were distinctly different from the other putative lecithotrophic species of the complex. These differences and other characteristics of each species discard the possibility that they belong to a previously described species. Our results are applicable to future ecological, morphological and molecular studies of each species, habitat and phylogenetics.

A new species of Laeonereis from a shrimp farm associated with a subtropical coastal lagoon on the Mexican Pacific coast is described. The new species is characterized by a deep anterior groove on the prostomium, which is shared only with L. culveri. However, longer tentacular cirri extending back to the anterior margin of chaetiger two, the number of papillae of each group on the maxillary ring of the pharynx, and the relative size of the homogomph falcigers in the new species, allow us to separate the two species. Although the species has not been previously detected in the coastal lagoon surrounding the shrimp farm, we postulate that L. watsoni n. sp. is likely to be part of the invertebrate communities of the upper parts of similar coastal lagoons that are common along the tropical coasts of Mexico.

A new species of polychaete, Armandia sampadae was collected from shallow sandy sediments off Rutland Island (57 m depth) and off North Andaman (52 m depth) during a benthic survey along the continental shelf of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The major character which distinguishes this species from other members of the genus Armandia is the presence of a pair of large, flattened, rounded, stalked, pigmented, leaf-shaped ventral papillae at the ventral base of the ringed anal funnel and the occurrence of a pair of sub-triangular black pigmented spots in the basal portion of the ventral papillae.

Specimens of the deep-sea scale worm Neopolynoe acanellae (Verrill, 1881) (Polychaeta, Polynoidae) were collected at depths between 466 and 1405 m in Canadian waters while still attached to their host, the pennatulacean coral (sea pen) Pennatula grandis Ehrenberg, 1834. The present records extend the northern latitude of occurrence of N. acanellae in North America by 17o (~2000 km) to include the northern continental shelf of Newfoundland and Labrador and the lower Arctic, off the southern coast of Baffin Island (Canada). Analysis of the worm's intestinal content confirmed the presence of sea pen soft tissues and sclerites, suggesting that this species feeds on its host and is therefore parasitic.

Benthic communities form an important component of the marine food chain. Their occurrence also provides information on the health of the ecosystem. A study was carried out to understand the distribution and abundance of macrobenthos along with sediment characteristics and physicochemical parameters in Visakhapatnam Harbour, a major port along the east coast of India. In all 84 macrobenthic taxa were reported from the port area of which 60 were polychaetes and 24 were other invertebrate taxa. Our observations revealed an increase in the number of polychaete species observed over the last 20 years from this region. An earlier study reported 38 polychaete species in 1975 and a year later the number of polychaete species reported was 12, indicating an increase in the number of polychaete species in the present study by about 150%. The macrobenthic abundance and dominance of species varied with the seasons. Pre-monsoon was dominated by Cirratulus sp., during monsoon tanaids were dominant indicating a seasonal shift in the occurrence and dominance of macrobenthos. During post-monsoon, Cossura coasta was dominant followed by Nephtys dibranchis and amphipods. Sediment characteristics (sand, silt and clay), organic carbon and dissolved oxygen were the important factors influencing the abundance and species diversity. The abundance of macrobenthic forms also varied with inner and outer harbour region. Higher species diversity was observed in the outer harbour suggesting the outer harbour has semi-polluted conditions such as higher dissolved oxygen (DO) and salinity, low nutrients (nitrite, nitrate and silicate) and low organic carbon in the sediment.

The small polychaete family Trochochaetidae is monogeneric and had been recorded almost exclusively in the northern hemisphere before this study. During a benthic investigation in the coastal shelf zone off Angola at 15°S several specimens were collected from 84 m depth differing from other members of the family and we described it as a new species herein. The only known African species so far was Trochochaeta kirkegaardi from the eastern Atlantic. Trochochaeta ankeae sp. nov. is characterized by having four minute eyes, a small conical antenna, a nuchal crest projecting through chaetiger 2, by lacking notochaetae on chaetiger 2, by having acicular spines on neuropodia 2 and 3 and a pair of conical papillae ventral on abdomen. A key to all 11 known species (including an unnamed one) is given.

Several studies have been conducted to explain patterns of the abundance, richness and diversity of sandy-beach macrofauna; however, such analyses have ignored the overall functional structure of macrofauna communities. Few studies have examined polychaete feeding guilds on sandy beach environments. To examine the effects of environmental factors on polychaete feeding guilds on sandy beaches, 12 sandy beaches from five islands in Sepetiba Bay were sampled. A total of 24 polychaete morphospecies, grouped among 21 families, were identified in these sandy beaches. The polychaete species were classified into 10 feeding guilds, and the SDT guild (suspended-deposit feeders, discretely motile, with tentacles) was the most abundant feeding guild, with 34.2% of total number of organisms. The highest trophic importance index and index of trophic diversity values were recorded on the sheltered beaches. A canonical correspondence analysis showed that the exposure rate, beach length, and grain size of the beach sediment significantly affected the polychaete feeding guild distribution and abundance. We can conclude that sheltered beaches have a higher diversity of feeding guilds than exposed beaches and that the biological descriptors of the feeding guilds are directly associated with the grain size of the sediment.

Polyonyx gibbesi—commonly known as the porcelain crab—lives commensally with an annelid that builds U-shaped tubes in shallow waters along the Atlantic coast. Polyonyx gibbesi is considered to have a mostly anti-tropical distribution, since it has been found only sporadically in tropical waters (e.g. the Caribbean). A total of 27 tubes of the polychaete host were collected from the estuarine mudflat of the Vaza-Barris River, State of Sergipe, Brazil; 23 of these tubes were inhabited by at least one individual of P. gibbesi. In the hosts examined, 42 crabs were found (21 males and 21 females). A total of four hosts harboured a single commensal crab. In all cases in which more than one crab was found per host, they were a male and female pair. A total of five females were recorded carrying eggs (1171.6 ± 534.5). The frequency of P. gibbesi in the host was high (about 85%), suggesting that the occurrence of this porcelain crab was not accidental or sporadic at the study site. The presence of ovigerous females in the population further indicates the existence of mature and sexually active individuals, which are effectively reproducing. The expansion of the known distribution of P. gibbesi to the State of Sergipe in Brazil challenges the current idea of an anti-tropical distribution for P. gibbesi. Most probably, the current status of knowledge about this species' distribution is the result of its commensal lifestyle, which makes it difficult to collect, and also the paucity of investigations along the north-eastern Brazilian coast.

This work reports a new type of actinospore, Unicapsulactinomyxon, which exhibits a unique morphological characteristic in that it has a single and large polar capsule (9·3×4·1 μm) (which possesses a longitudinally-folded polar filament) instead of the 3 polar capsules previously described for actinosporeans. The spore has a binucleated sporoplasm and 3 valves, each of which forms a long process. The spore has a total length of 241·3 μm. This parasite develops in groups of 8 inside pansporocysts in the coelomic cavity of the polychaete host. Molecular investigations on the SSU rDNA show that the new actinospore type is most closely related to Enteromyxum species (81–84% similarity). A survey of actinospore infections of the marine polychaete Diopatra neapolitana in 2007 and 2009, in the Aveiro Estuary (Portugal), showed an annual prevalence of 1·0% and 0·3%, respectively.

Benthic polychaetes in the largest intertidal mudflat of Hong Kong were analysed for potentially stressed environmental conditions from pollution. Over a two-year period, a total of 14 species were recorded with the species diversity (H′(log2)) ranged from 0.54 to 2.4. The community was dominated by two large polychaetes (Neanthes glandicincta and Potamilla acuminata) and a number of small pollution tolerant species (Tharyx, Capitella capitata and Prionospio cirrifera). It was also characterized by both temporal and spatial variations in terms of abundance and species composition with the lowest species number observed at onshore Station B in August and the highest at offshore Station D in February. Two distinct polychaete communities were formed along the intertidal towards subtidal mudflat, particularly the assemblage at onshore Station B showing a significant difference from those at the other three stations (P < 0.05, N = 32). Results of the abundance–biomass comparison (ABC) indicated a typical impacted community at the whole study area, especially at Station B which was close to the Shenzhen River mouth and mangrove forest. The total organic carbon had a significant positive effect on the abundance of Capitella capitata (P = 0.037, N = 8) while sedimentary compositions were statistically related to the abundance of Potamilla acuminata, Tharyx and total abundance of polychaetes (P < 0.05, N = 8). In conclusion, both the polluted Shenzhen River and nearby mangrove may be responsible for the decline in species richness and diversity as well as changes in community structure. Polychaetes can be used as the appropriate indicators in habitat ecological condition assessment instead of the whole benthic community.

A new spionid polychaete, Malacoceros jennicus, is described from the crater of a hydrothermally active submarine volcano near Grenada in the Caribbean, Lesser Antilles Arc region. The new species is characterized by having prominent lateral frontal horns on the prostomium, paired eye spots, neurosetae that include simple capillaries, inferior sabre setae, numerous bidentate hooded hooks, and a pygidium bearing four digitiform anal cirri surrounding the anus. Worms were collected in regions of diffuse venting with a suction sampler deployed on an ROV. Specimens representing a range of sizes including sexually mature and reproductive individuals containing eggs and sperm were found. Stable isotope analysis of 13C and 15N indicate mixed feeding on photosynthetic and hydrothermal vent source material.

The diet of Heard Island cormorants was investigated by examination of casts over three summer seasons. The diet was composed mainly of benthic organisms, with polychaetes being the most common prey for the greater part of the population. Fish were taken commonly only by the small breeding population at the western end of the island, whereas elsewhere only 22% of casts contained any fish remains at all. The diet is therefore different from that reported for Phalacrocorax atriceps at other localities.
