Two field experiments were conducted during 2018 at Paskeville and Arthurton, South Australia, to identify effective herbicide options for the control of thiocarbamate-resistant rigid ryegrass in wheat. Dose–response experiments confirmed resistance in both field populations (T1 and A18) of rigid ryegrass to triallate, prosulfocarb, trifluralin, and pyroxasulfone. T1 and A18 were 17.9- and 20-fold more resistant to triallate than susceptible SLR4. The level of resistance detected in T1 to prosulfocarb (5.9-fold) and pyroxasulfone (4-fold) was lower compared to A18, which displayed 12.1- and 7.8-fold resistance to both herbicides, respectively. Despite resistance, the mixture of two different preplant-incorporated (PPI) site-of-action herbicides improved rigid ryegrass control and wheat yield compared to a single PPI herbicide only. Prosulfocarb + triallate and prosulfocarb + S-metolachlor + triallate did not reduce rigid ryegrass seed set when compared to prosulfocarb applied alone at the higher rate (2,400 g ai ha–1). Pyroxasulfone + triallate PPI followed by glyphosate (1,880 g ai ha-1) as a weed seed set control treatment reduced rigid ryegrass seed production by 93% and 95% at both sites, respectively. These herbicides also significantly improved grain yield of wheat at Paskeville (22%) and Arthurton (38%) compared to the untreated.

DPX PE350, an experimental herbicide, has shown excellent potential for controlling a wide range of problem broadleaf weeds in cotton. PPI, PRE, and POST applications of DPX PE350 at 0.1 and 0.2 kg ai/ha were evaluated under weedfree conditions in 1991 and 1992 for effects on ‘Paymaster HS26’ cotton growth, yield, and fiber quality. In 1991, DPX PE350 applied PPI, PRE, or POST did not affect cotton population, height, yield, or fiber quality. In 1992, DPX PE350 applied PPI at 0.1 or 0.2 kg/ha or PRE at 0.2 kg/ha injured the cotton and reduced yield and micronaire value.

Field studies were conducted to evaluate common cocklebur control in soybean with imazaquin applied preplant incorporated (PPI), preemergence (PRE), and postemergence (POST) at rates ranging from 24 to 140 g ai ha-1. With logistic regression analysis, predictions of common cocklebur control with imazaquin at 140 g ha-1 ranged from 92 to 95% (PPI), 87 and 92% (PRE), and 88 to 98% (POST) when rainfall was received for activation of PRE treatments and when weeds were not moisture stressed at time of POST application. When imazaquin was reduced to 70 g ha-1 under the same conditions, weed control was no higher than 88% PPI and 78% PRE. For all locations and years, common cocklebur control ranged from 79 to 91% for imazaquin POST at 24 g ha-1. Soybean yield was positively correlated with common cocklebur control (r = 0.66, P < 0.05).

Field studies were established to evaluate several new herbicides for preplant incorporated and postemergence shattercane control in soybeans. Imazethapyr applied postemergence controlled shattercane most consistently. The type of adjuvant tank mixed with sethoxydim did not influence shattercane control, panicle production, or soybean yields. Preplant incorporated applications of imazethapyr, imazaquin, or clomazone either alone or tank mixed with trifluralin or pendimethalin gave inconsistent shattercane control and soybean yields compared to handweeded plots.

A 4-yr field test was initiated in 1975 to determine susceptibility of a natural infestation of six morningglory species to herbicides which can be applied to the soil and foliage in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. The species studied were pitted morningglory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.), entireleaf morningglory [Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacq. var. integriuscula], ivyleaf morningglory [Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacq.], purple moonflower [Ipomoea muricata (L.) Jacq.], palmleaf morningglory [Ipomoea wrightii (Gray)], and small flower morningglory [Jacquemontia tamnifolia (L.) Griseb.]. Control with herbicides applied preplant incorporated and preemergence was dependent on morningglory species and on rainfall to allow plant uptake of the herbicide. Herbicides applied to the soil were not as effective as those applied postemergence. Oxadiazon [2-tert-butyl-4-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-δ2-1,3,4-oxadiazolin-5-one] gave the best and longest lasting preemergence control, averaging 79% control for all species. Preemergence control with metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] was dependent on species, with 84% control of small flower morningglory and only 26% for ivyleaf and 18% for entireleaf morningglory. At V2 (one trifoliolate) and V5 stages of soybean growth, acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid} at 0.56 kg/ha applied over-the-top and oxyfluorfen [2-chloro-1-(3-ethoxy-4-nitrophenoxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzene] at 0.28 kg/ha applied post-directed gave 90 and 92% control of all species, respectively. Most effective were repeated post-directed applications at V5 and V7 stages of soybean growth. Metribuzin + 2,4-DB [4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)butyric acid] (99%), linuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea] + 2,4-DB (98%), 2,4-DB (95%), and paraquat (1,1′-dimethyl-4,4′-bipyridinium ion) + 2,4-DB (93%) provided excellent control regardless of the morningglory species.

Fluchloralin [N-(2-chloroethyl)-2,6-dinitro-N-propyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine], pendimethalin [N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine], and trifluralin [2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzenamine] either alone or in combination with fluazifop {(±)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid}, haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid}, or sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} were evaluated for johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] control in reduced-tillage soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production systems. Data obtained in 1983 and 1984 near Lexington and Princeton, KY, indicated that johnsongrass could be effectively controlled. A single discing before application of the soil-active herbicides usually had no effect on johnsongrass control. Johnsongrass control was primarily dependent on foliarly applied herbicides. Preplant-incorporated treatments did not provide adequate johnsongrass control when used alone. Johnsongrass panicle numbers recorded in September corresponded to visual evaluations of control recorded earlier in the growing season. Soybean yield with all herbicide treatments was greater than with a nontreated control and was closely associated with the degree of johnsongrass control.

Field experiments conducted in 1991, 1992, and 1993 evaluated Palmer amaranth and devil's-claw control and cotton injury with pyrithiobac applied PPI, PRE, or POST. Pyrithiobac at 36 or 71 g ae/ha applied PPI, PRE, or POST did not injure cotton. Pyrithiobac at 140 g/ha applied PPI or PRE injured cotton 9 to 11% 6 wk after treatment. Cotton recovered and no injury was observed 12 wk after treatment. Pyrithiobac applied PPI and PRE at 71 g/ha controlled Palmer amaranth at least 97% 6 wk after treatment. Palmer amaranth control with pyrithiobac applied POST was more variable and influenced by environmental conditions. Palmer amaranth control with 71 g/ha of pyrithiobac exceeded that with 36 g/ha. Devil's-claw control with pyrithiobac was better with POST applications than PPI or PRE applications. Pyrithiobac applied POST at 140 g/ha controlled devil's-claw 83–97%. These studies indicate that pyrithiobac can effectively control Palmer amaranth and devil's-claw in cotton on the Texas Southern High Plains when applied at appropriate rates and timings.

In field studies, in 1993, 1994, and 1995, clomazone at 390 g ai/ha and rimsulfuron at 35 g ai/ha were evaluated preplant incorporated (PPI) and postemergence (POST), respectively, for weed control and crop response in transplanted ‘Keystone RG3’ bell pepper. Clomazone did not injure bell pepper. Common lambsquarters and jimsonweed control was 77 to 95% by clomazone treatments but was variable by rimsulfuron treatments at 41 to 93% common lambsquarters control and 42 to 68% jimsonweed control; common ragweed control by both herbicides was unacceptable. Injury by rimsulfuron to bell pepper in the field was 19 to 47% at 21 DAT. In the greenhouse, injury to Keystone RG3 and three additional bell pepper varieties, ‘Camelot,’ ‘Jupiter,’ and ‘Memphis’ was similar at 44 to 62% by rimsulfuron at 17 to 35 g/ha POST, and bell pepper had lower height and dry weight than untreated controls. In the greenhouse, jimsonweed control was below 49% and black nightshade control was below 23% by 17 to 35 g/ha rimsulfuron. In these studies, clomazone controlled common lambsquarters and jimsonweed without injury to bell pepper. The solanaceous weeds treated in this study were not well controlled by rimsulfuron, and bell pepper was not sufficiently tolerant to rimsulfuron to permit its use in this crop.

Field studies were conducted from 1995 through 1998 to evaluate citronmelon control in peanut with various preplant and preemergence combinations of dimethenamid, flumioxazin, imazethapyr, lactofen, metolachlor, oxyfluorfen, and pendimethalin. Pendimethalin alone or in combination with imazethapyr, metolachlor, or dimethenamid did not control citronmelon. Flumioxazin alone, pendimethalin plus flumioxazin, or pendimethalin followed by (fb) lactofen controlled citronmelon at least 85% early season. Pendimethalin fb lactofen controlled citronmelon at least 75% late season, whereas all other herbicide treatments controlled less than 70%.

Research was conducted to determine the effects of management practices and precipitation on herbicide loss in surface water runoff. A field runoff experiment was conducted in 1999 and 2000 in Manhattan, KS. Some plots received only natural precipitation, whereas others received natural precipitation plus additional precipitation from a rainfall simulator. Atrazine was applied at 0.9 and 1.8 kg ha−1, S-metolachlor at 0.7 and 1.4 kg ha−1, and isoxaflutole at 0.05 and 0.11 kg ha−1 to field corn grown under conventional tillage and no-till. Runoff volumes and herbicide concentrations were determined for each runoff event. Across all precipitation, tillage, and placement variables, atrazine, S-metolachlor, and isoxaflutole and diketonitrile (DKN) (soil metabolite of isoxaflutole), hereafter referred to as isoxaflutole/DKN, losses were similar at 5.0, 4.1, and 4.1% of applied, respectively. Additional precipitation increased runoff 2.5-, 2.2-, and 3.4-fold for atrazine, S-metolachlor, and isoxaflutole/DKN, respectively. Preplant soil incorporation reduced atrazine, S-metolachlor, and isoxaflutole/DKN losses in runoff by 67, 69, and 57%, respectively, compared with soil surface applications. Lower preplant rainfall in 2000 resulted in sharply reduced runoff losses despite postplant precipitation similar to that in 1999. These findings suggest that the best management practices for atrazine can be used to manage S-metolachlor and isoxaflutole/DKN loss in surface water runoff.

Field experiments were conducted in 1998, 1999, and 2000 at two locations (Harrow and Ridgetown) in southwestern Ontario to determine the biologically effective rates (I90) of a commercial formulation of flufenacet plus metribuzin for weed control and processing tomato tolerance. At the proposed label use rate, flufenacet plus metribuzin provided excellent (≥90%) early-season (22 to 29 d after planting) control of velvetleaf, good (80 to 89%) control of barnyardgrass and redroot pigweed, and fair (60 to 79%) control of common lambsquarters. Flufenacet plus metribuzin provided fair late-season (59 to 97 d after planting) control of redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters and poor (≤59%) control of barnyardgrass and velvetleaf. At Harrow and Ridgetown, I90 values for early-season weed control ranged from 70 to 1,300 g ai/ha and 50 to 1,900 g ai/ha, respectively. Flufenacet plus metribuzin provided poor weed control at Ridgetown. This result was not attributable to higher weed density or particular weed species but may have been caused by lack of rainfall and too low application rates for the medium-textured soil type. It is estimated that flufenacet plus metribuzin at 1,400 g/ha can control green foxtail season-long, whereas barnyardgrass and common lambsquarters would require 1,900 g/ha. Season-long control of velvetleaf and redroot pigweed would require application rates of 3,200 and 7,100 g/ha, respectively. Only slight early-season crop injury was observed, which was not reflected in yields. Optimum yields of tomatoes were obtained at Harrow at rates lower or slightly higher than the registered rates for corn and soybean. Tomato yields were higher at Harrow than at Ridgetown, which may have been due to differences in soil texture. Tomatoes grown in a medium-textured (Ridgetown) soil appeared to be less competitive against weeds than those grown in a coarse-textured soil (Harrow).
