Most previous studies reject the basic tenet of the Masters Hypothesis that the influx of financial index investments has pressured agricultural futures prices upwards substantially. However, the impact of index investment activities may be more complicated and nuanced than can be detected by the relatively simple linear Granger causality tests used in many previous studies. Our study applies a new cross-quantilogram (CQ) test to weekly index trader positions and returns in four agricultural futures markets. Overall, we find limited support for a significant relationship between extreme index trader position changes and returns, and even less support that increased index trading activities have pushed commodity prices higher.

In this paper we estimate quantile sensitivities for dependent sequences via infinitesimal perturbation analysis, and prove asymptotic unbiasedness, weak consistency, and a central limit theorem for the estimators under some mild conditions. Two common cases, the regenerative setting and ϕ-mixing, are analyzed further, and a new batched estimator is constructed based on regenerative cycles for regenerative processes. Two numerical examples, the G/G/1 queue and the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, are given to show the effectiveness of the estimator.

With financial modelling requiring a better understanding of model risk, it is helpful to be able to vary assumptions about underlying probability distributions in an efficient manner, preferably without the noise induced by resampling distributions managed by Monte Carlo methods. This paper presents differential equations and solution methods for the functions of the form Q(x) = F−1(G(x)), where F and G are cumulative distribution functions. Such functions allow the direct recycling of Monte Carlo samples from one distribution into samples from another. The method may be developed analytically for certain special cases, and illuminate the idea that it is a more precise form of the traditional Cornish–Fisher expansion. In this manner the model risk of distributional risk may be assessed free of the Monte Carlo noise associated with resampling. The method may also be regarded as providing both analytical and numerical bases for doing more precise Cornish–Fisher transformations. Examples are given of equations for converting normal samples to Student t, and converting exponential to normal. In the case of the normal distribution, the change of variables employed allows the sampling to take place to good accuracy based on a single rational approximation over a very wide range of sample space. The avoidance of branching statements is of use in optimal graphics processing unit (GPU) computations as it avoids the effect of branch divergence. We give a branch-free normal quantile that offers performance improvements in a GPU environment while retaining the best precision characteristics of well-known methods. We also offer models with low probability branch divergence. Comparisons of new and existing forms are made on Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan and Tesla C2050 GPUs. We argue that in both single- and double-precisions, the change-of-variables approach offers the most GPU-optimal Gaussian quantile yet, working faster than the Cuda 5.5 built-in function.

Some major companies have the policy of annually giving numerical scores to their employees according to their performance, firing those whose performance scores are below a given percentile of the scores of all employees, and then recruiting new employees to replace those who were fired. We introduce a probabilistic model to describe how this practice affects the quality of employee performance as measured over time by the annual scores. Let n be the number of years that the policy has been in effect, and let Fn(x) be the distribution function of the evaluation scores in year n. We show, under certain technical assumptions, that the sequence (Fn(x)) satisfies a particular nonlinear difference equation, and furnish estimates of the solution of the equation and expressions for the quantiles of Fn. The mathematical tools that are used include convex functions, difference equations, and extreme value theory for independent and identically distributed random variables.

When analyzing catastrophic risk, traditional measures for evaluating risk, such as the probable maximum loss (PML), value at risk (VaR), tail-VaR, and others, can become practically impossible to obtain analytically in certain types of insurance, such as earthquake, and certain types of reinsurance arrangements, specially non-proportional with reinstatements. Given the available information, it can be very difficult for an insurer to measure its risk exposure. The transfer of risk in this type of insurance is usually done through reinsurance schemes combining diverse types of contracts that can greatly reduce the extreme tail of the cedant's loss distribution. This effect can be assessed mathematically. The PML is dei ned in terms of a very extreme quantile. Also, under standard operating conditions, insurers use several “layers” of non proportional reinsurance that may or may not be combined with some type of proportional reinsurance. The resulting reinsurance structures will then be very complicated to analyze and to evaluate their mitigation or transfer effects analytically, so it may be necessary to use alternative approaches, such as Monte Carlo simulation methods. This is what we do in this paper in order to measure the effect of a complex reinsurance treaty on the risk profile of an insurance company. We compute the pure risk premium, PML as well as a host of results: impact on the insured portfolio, risk transfer effect of reinsurance programs, proportion of times reinsurance is exhausted, percentage of years it was necessary to use the contractual reinstatements, etc. Since the estimators of quantiles are known to be biased, we explore the alternative of using an Extreme Value approach to complement the analysis.

We describe two chain-transformations which explain and extend identities for order statistics and quantiles proved by Wendel, Port and, more recently, by Dassios.

Two continuous distributions, G, H so related that any two quantiles of H are more widely separated than the corresponding quantiles of G may be said to be ‘ordered in dispersion'; Saunders and Moran have given examples. It is shown here that distributions F (called ‘dispersive' distributions) exist, e.g. the exponential, such that if G, H are ordered in dispersion then so also are the convolutions F ∗G, F ∗H. The class of dispersive distributions is determined, and shown to coincide with the class of strongly unimodal distributions.
