Few studies have examined the psychometric properties of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) in a large adolescent community sample, finding a significant disparity. This study explores the psychometric properties of the CD-RISC among Spanish adolescents by means of exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Rasch analysis, and measurement invariance (MI) across sex, as well as internal consistency and criterion validity. The sample was comprised of 463 adolescents (231 girls), aged 12 to 18 years, who completed the CD-RISC and other measures on emotional status and quality of life. The EFA suggested that the CD-RISC structure presented a unidimensional model. Consequently, shorter unidimensional CD-RISC models observed in the literature were explored. Thus, the Campbell-Sills and Stein CD–RISC–10 showed the soundest psychometric properties, providing an adequate item fit and supporting MI and non-differential item functioning across sex. Item difficulty levels were biased toward low levels of resilience. Some items showed malfunctioning in lower response categories. With regard to reliability, categorical omega was. 82. Strong associations with health-related quality of life, major depressive disorder symptoms, and emotional symptoms were observed. A weak association was found between resilience and the male sex. Campbell-Sills and Stein’s CD–RISC–10 model emerges as the best to assess resilience among Spanish adolescents, as already reported in adults. Thus, independently of the developmental stage, the core of resilience may reside in the aspects of hardiness and persistence.

Reliable and valid assessment of sports nutrition knowledge can inform athlete nutrition education to address knowledge gaps. This study aimed to test the reliability and validity of an electronically administered sports nutrition knowledge tool – Platform to Evaluate Athlete Knowledge of Sports Nutrition Questionnaire (PEAKS-NQ). A 94-item PEAKS-NQ was piloted to 149 developmental athletes (DA) in New Zealand, with a subset invited to complete the PEAKS-NQ again to assess reliability. Reliability was evaluated using sign test, intraclass correlation and Cronbach’s α. Accredited sports dietitians (ASD; n 255) completed the PEAKS-NQ to establish construct validity via known-groups methodology and provided relevance scores to determine the scale content validity index (S-CVI). Rasch analysis was conducted to identify potentially problematic items and test reliability. Score differences between DA and ASD were analysed using independent t or non-parametric tests. DA (n 88) were 17·8 (sd 1·4) years, 61·4 % female and mostly in high school (94·3 %). ASD (n 45) were 37·8 (sd 7·6) years, 82·2 % female, with >5 years of dietetic experience (59·1 %). ASD scored higher than DA in all sections and overall (91·5 (sd 3·4) v. 67·1 (sd 10·5) %) (P < 0·001). There were no differences between retests (n 18; P = 0·14). Cronbach’s α was 0·86. S-CVI indicated good content validity (0·88). Rasch analysis resulted in a fifty-item PEAKS-NQ with high item (0·91) and person (0·92) reliability. The PEAKS-NQ is reliable and valid for assessing sports nutrition knowledge which could assist practitioners effectively tailor and evaluate nutrition education.

Existing Australian measures of racist attitudes focus on single groups or have not been validated across the lifespan. To redress this, the present research aimed to develop and validate a measure of racial, ethnic, cultural and religious acceptance — the Australian Racism, Acceptance, and Cultural-Ethnocentrism Scale (RACES) — for use with children, adolescents and adults. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with 30 adolescents in Victoria, Australia, to develop the instrument, which was pilot tested with eight children. The novel 34-item scale consists of three subscales (Accepting Attitudes — 12 items; Racist Attitudes — 8 items; Ethnocentric Attitudes — 4 items) and a 10-item measure of social desirability. The instrument was tested with 296 Victorian school children, 182 adolescents and 120 adults from the Australian community, with data modelled and analysed utilising classical test theory and item response theory. Estimates of internal consistency reliability and factorial, construct, convergent and discriminant validity support the measure. The instrument is the first general attitudinal measure of racial, ethnic, cultural and religious acceptance to be designed and scientifically validated within the Australian context. RACES can be utilised across the lifespan to evaluate attitudes towards all racial, ethnic, cultural and religious groups. RACES has potential to be widely utilised to evaluate anti-racism and pro-diversity interventions implemented within schools and throughout the community, enabling the development of a strong evidence base for initiatives to reduce community levels of racism. However, future research is needed to confirm the psychometric properties and establish the temporal stability of the scale prior to dissemination throughout Australia.

The reliable change index (RCI) was introduced approximately 30 decades ago in order to provide an empirical, statistically grounded technique for determining whether improvement after a therapeutic intervention was real or due to measurement error. Since the definitions of the properties and limitations of scales of measurement described by Stevens in 1947, there has been vigorous controversy about whether it is permissible to analyse ordinal data with parametric statistics. Specifically, are parameters and statistics such as means and standard deviations meaningful in the context of ordinal data? These are important concerns because many of the scales used to measure outcomes in behavioural research and clinical settings yield ordinal-scale measures. Given that the standard deviation is used in the computation of the RCI, the question as to whether or not the RCI is reliable when used with ordinal-scale data is explored. Data from the SPRS-2 was used to calculate minimum reliable difference criteria in terms of both (ordinal) Total Raw Scores (MRDRS) and logit scores (MRDLS) derived from Rasch analysis. Test–retest differences across the Total Raw Score range were evaluated using each criterion. At both extremes of the range, small changes in Total Raw Score not deemed to be reliable according to the MRDRS criterion were classified as reliable according to the MRDLS criterion. Conversely, test–retest changes in the centre of the range deemed to be reliable according to the MRDRS criterion were classified as unreliable according to the MRDLS criterion. It is suggested that while MRDRS can determine numerically reliable differences, MRDLS can determine reliable differences that are meaningful in terms of the underlying construct being measured.

The Earning Capacity Assessment Form-2 assesses the factors that inhibit and facilitate an individual's return to work following an acquired disability (e.g., accident, misadventure). The purpose of this article is to provide the first item response analysis of the form. Data on Australian and US accident victims (N = 110) from two vocational assessment practices were used as a basis for evaluation. An item-response analysis was conducted using the Quest package for the 14 category responses. Results indicated that (a) the items function as inhibitors rather than drivers; and (b) they form a coherent underlying dimension of impairment. Problems in cognition and vocational adjustment issues were major markers for work incapacity.

Background: The International Wellbeing Index is a measure of general quality of life formed by two scales: the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) and the National Wellbeing Index (NWI). This paper studies the psychometric properties of the PWI and NWI, using Rasch analysis and classic psychometric methods.

Methods: The PWI and NWI were applied to a representative sample of 1106 community-dwelling adults, aged 60 years and over, residing in Spain. Mean ± standard deviation age was 72.07 ± 7.83 years and 56.3% were women.

Results: Five PWI items (achieving in life, relationships, safety, community connectedness, and future security), and five NWI items (economic situation, state of environment, social conditions, business, and national security of the country) fitted the Rasch model. After adjusting the response scale format, satisfactory fit was obtained, with good reliability (person separation index of 0.91 for both the PSI and NWI), local independency of items, and strict unidimensionality. The measures showed adequate external construct validity with related measures.

Conclusions: The PWI and the NWI, with fewer items and simpler response scale formats, provided valid and reliable linear measures in older adults, according to Rasch and classic psychometric analyses.

Background: The field of geriatric medicine has identified a need for an evaluative tool that can rapidly quantify global cognitive ability and accurately monitor change over time in patients with a wide range of impairments. We hypothesized that the development of an adaptive test approach to cognitive measurement would help to meet that need. This study aimed to provide evidence for the interpretability of scores obtained from a novel, adaptive approach to cognitive assessment, called the Geriatric Rapid Adaptive Cognitive Estimate (GRACE) method.

Methods: An adaptive method for cognitive assessment was developed using data from 185 patients referred for geriatric cognitive assessment, and pilot tested in an additional 137 patients. Correlations between test scores and between rank orders of patients were computed to examine the reliability and validity of cognitive ability scores obtained by (1) administering test questions out of their usual order, (2) administering only a subset of questions, and (3) administering questions adaptively using simplified selection rules based on the most difficult question passed.

Results: Cognitive ability scores obtained with the GRACE method correlated highly with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores (r = 0.93) and ranked patients similarly in order of ability (r > 0.87). A simplified adaptive testing algorithm for pencil-and-paper assessment demonstrated moderately high correlations with scores obtained from administering the full set of MMSE and MoCA items as well as the MoCA items alone.

Conclusions: Scores from the GRACE method can be obtained easily in 5–10 minutes, reducing test burden. The resulting numeric score quantifies cognitive ability, allowing clinicians to compare patients and monitor change in global cognition over time. The adaptive nature of this method allows for evaluation of persons across a broader range of cognitive ability levels than currently available tests.
