The impact of fish and cyclopoid copepod predation on zooplankton communities was evaluated using large-volume mesocosms (depth 9.5 m; volume 13 m3) in the Římov reservoir (Czech Republic). Two yearling roach and perch individuals introduced into mesocosms represented the fish treatment, which was compared to cyclopoid copepods (initial abundance of 2 ind.L−1) and a control with no initial addition of predators. Our results clearly support the hypothesis that planktivorous fish feeding leads to the suppression of large-bodied cladocerans. In the presence of fish, the cladoceran community changed from a dominance of large-bodied Daphnia spp. at the beginning to dominance by the smaller Bosmina longirostris at the end of the experiment. Chlorophyll-a concentration and rotifer abundances increased in the absence of daphnids. In the absence of fish, the presence of large-bodied cladocerans resulted in decreasing chlorophyll-a concentration. Although no significant differences were observed between cyclopoid abundances in treatments stocked with cyclopoids and the control, the proportion of large cladocerans clearly showed the effect of the manipulation. The similar trends in both of these treatments did not confirm the importance of cyclopoid predation in our experiment. The overall strong effect of fish over cyclopoid predation suggests the main role of fish predation in the forming of zooplankton communities and in turn impacting phytoplankton biomass in mesocosms.

Sampling of the fish community was carried out for 20 years in the Mirgenbach reservoir, in North-Eastern France. The prevalence and the mean intensity of Ligula intestinalis (Cestoda) were analysed in roach (Rutilus rutilus) and silver bream (Blicca bjoerkna) populations, the main two infected species. The aim of this study was to investigate the host switch from roach to silver bream and the consequences of L. intestinalis infestation in silver bream, which is an unusual host for this parasite as Ligula parasitism in silver bream appears to be rare. We analysed in detail the relationships between parasitism index (PI), gonadosomatic index (GSI), perivisceral fat abundance (PFA) and condition index (CI) in the silver bream population. In 1998, prevalence of L. intestinalis highlighted a clear host switch from roach to silver bream. In the silver bream population, young fish were the most severely infected and the impact of plerocercoids appeared to be different depending on the host sex. In male silver bream, plerocercoids drew energy from fat reserves even if GSI was also slightly impacted. On the contrary, in females energy was diverted from gonad maturation rather than from perivisceral fat reserves. No significant difference was observed in terms of CI in either sex.

The activity of hepatic glutathione-S-transferase (GST) was analysed in 3 different fish species with respect to fish sex and infection with parasites. In both sexes of laboratory bred three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) experimentally infected with Schistocephalus solidus (Cestoda), a significantly lower GST-activity was found for infected fish compared to control. After field sampling of roach (Rutilus rutilus) from Lake Müggelsee (MS) and the Reservoir Listertalsperre (LTS), the GST-activity showed significantly lower values for males infected with Ligula intestinalis from MS (25%) and for infected females from LTS (55%). L. intestinalis-infected female chub (Leuciscus cephalus) from LTS also appeared to have a lower GST-activity. Thus, it could be shown that the presence of parasites significantly affects GST-activity in different fish species resulting in a decreased GST-activity due to infection. Our results therefore emphasize the need for more integrative approaches in environmental pollution research to clearly identify the possible effects of parasites in an effort to develop biomarkers for evaluating environmental health.

The effects of parasite infection by the cestode Ligula intestinalis on the reproductive function and endocrine system of wild roach Rutilus rutilus were evaluated. Gonad maturation, plasma vitellogenin, plasma steroid concentrations (i.e. progesterone, 11-keto-testosterone and 17-β-estradiol) and brain aromatase activity were investigated in relation with parasitization. A low prevalence (8%) of ligulosed roach and a moderate impact of parasitization (mean parasitization index of 8·8%) were found in the studied population. Inhibition of gonad maturation generally resulted from infestation but 5% of the ligulosed roach nevertheless reached maturity. Main sex steroid plasma content was depleted in both genders. Male 11-keto-testosterone, female 17-β-estradiol and progesterone plasma concentrations of both genders were, respectively, 27, 5 and 3 times lower in ligulosed fish when compared to their non-infected counterparts. Progesterone levels were negatively correlated with the parasitization index in females. Brain aromatase activity of infected roach was reduced to 50% of that of the non-infected fish. These results demonstrate significant negative effects on the reproductive function of wild roach infected by the tapeworm L. intestinalis collected from a site with low contamination.

Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) species were studied on the gills of roach (Rutilus rutilus) from a total of 293 fish in 3 interconnected lakes in Central Finland. One of the lakes is eutrophic and polluted by a paper and pulp mill, one is eutrophic and one is oligotrophic. Nine Dactylogyrus species were found. The structure of the monogenean communities was analysed at the component and infracommunity level and the Dactylogyrus fauna of the lakes was compared. Although it was found that the component communities tended to be very similar there were also differences. The abundance and diversity were highest in the polluted lake; the infracommunities of this lake were considerably more often dominated by Dactylogyrus micracanthus and the similarities between the infracommunities were higher within the lakes than between the lakes. It is suggested that these differences are due to the differing water quality of the lakes. The nature of the monogenean community, its possible interactivity, is also discussed.

The Dactylogyrus fauna was studied from the gills of 293 roach between February 1988 and April 1989. Roach were caught from three interconnected lakes in Central Finland. Nine Dactylogyrus species were found. Of these the seven most abundant were used for studying the abundance of species on different gill-arches, niche breadth and niche overlap between the species. It was found that all species had a species-specific preference for certain gill-arches. The total abundances of all the species went through distinct seasonal changes, peaking during the spring and early summer. Some seasonal variation was also exhibited in gill-arch preferences. Niche breadth and species overlap were mostly higher during the period of peak occurrence of the various species, but in the case of some species they appeared to be unrelated to abundance, indicating possible niche restriction by other species. Most significant was the restriction of D. micracanthus to the fourth gill-arch during the period of peak occurrence of D. similis. Experimental work is needed to verify the reasons for variations in the microhabitat distribution of certain Dactylogyrus species.

Roach (n = 81) caught on 23 May, 1992 from oligotrophic, unpolluted Lake Peurunka were kept in cages over a 2-week period before moving half of the fish to nearby Lake Vatia, which is influenced by pulp mill effluents. Before moving the fish gill parasites were examined from 9 fish; 5 Dactylogyrus species, Gyrodactylus sp. and Paradiplozoon homoion were found, the main components of the infracommunities being dactylogyrids. Afterwards, 5 fish from each lake were studied weekly between 1 July and 17 August. Metazoan parasites were recorded from gill arches divided into 4 sections along the dorso-ventral axis. D. crucifer, D. nanus, D. micracanthus and D. suecicus occurred in both lakes throughout the study. Gyrodactylus sp., Ergasilus briani and P. homoion occurred in low numbers in both lakes. Differences between the lakes were seen in the prevalence of D. micracanthus which was higher in Lake Vatia and significantly increased abundances of D. crucifer, D. nanus and D. micracanthus in Lake Vatia. Abundances of other Dactylogyrus species remained, on average, at the same level in both lakes. No change during the experiment was recorded in the location of the two most common species, D. crucifer and D. nanus, on the host gills in either of the lakes, both species favouring the 2nd and 3rd gill arches and especially the inner parts of the gills. The apparent lack of competition between the 2 most common Dactylogyrus species indicates that no limitation of resources on roach gills occurred. This was also confirmed by the increased overlapping indices with increasing abundances between the two most common species in Lake Vatia.

Numerous studies have demonstrated that parasites with complex life-cycles can cause phenotypic modifications in their hosts that lead to an increased rate of transmission, and suggest that these modifications are the result of parasitic adaptations to manipulate the host. Little attention is paid, however, to separating the possibility of adaptive host manipulation from incidental (if fortuitous) side-effects of infection. In this study we combine statistical and analytical tools to interpret the impact of the macroparasite Ligula intestinalis L. (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidea) on the behaviour of its intermediate fish host (the roach, Rutilus rutilus L.), using field data on a natural system. Two distinct sets of generalized linear models agree that both the presence and the intensity of infection contribute to a modified behavioural response in the host. This was illustrated by a preference for the lake-edge in infected fish during autumn. Furthermore, the effect of parasites upon their host is heterogeneous with respect to parasite size, with larger parasite individuals having a disproportionate impact. A series of game-theoretic models of adaptive host manipulation illustrate a potential rationale for a size-dependent manipulation strategy in parasites. These findings illustrate the potential complexity and functionality of the impact of L. intestinalis upon its fish host, which together reduce the parsimony of the alternative ‘incidental effect’ hypothesis.

One of the most frequently used sampling methods used in defining fish microhabitat is the Point Abundance Sampling byElectrofishing (PASE) technique. Nevertheless this method is size-selective and induces escapement behaviour in most fish species.The aim of this study is first to describe a direct visual fish observation method, the Point Abundance Sampling by Scubadiving (PASS), and second, to compare this method with the classical PASE to determine 0+ (i.e. young of the year) roach(Rutilus rutilus,L.) microhabitat in the littoral zone of a mesotrophic lake.The study was undertaken during summer 1998 in lake Pareloup (south-west France). Sampling was performed weekly in tworestricted littoral areas of the lake which presented the same environmental and topographical characteristics aiming to compare0+ roach habitat features obtained using the two sampling techniques (PASE and PASS). The two data matrices obtained (i.e.PASE and PASS) were used to develop microhabitat preference indices for each of the 9 variables as a measurement of habitatuse by the 0+ roach vs. habitat availability.Even though 0+ roach occurrence and abundance were found to be similar with both methods, microhabitat profiles revealeddifferent patterns. A significant microhabitat difference between the two sampling methods was found using the non-parametricstatistical test of Wilcoxon (Z = -4.20, p < 0.01). We can hypothesise that the differences observed between the two samplingdesigns were due to an escapement behaviour of 0+ roach. Unlike PASS, using PASE, fish are located in «shelter habitats» suchas shallow water and dense vegetation. Such behaviour is caused by the environmental disturbance induced by this samplingmethod. The study reveals that PASS appears to be more suitable than PASE for the assessment 0+ fish microhabitat.

Experimental exposure to bleached kraft pulp and paper mill effluent (BKME) at a concentration of 10% significantly reduced the abundance and mean number of species of Dactylogyrus on the gills of naturally infected roach, Rutilus rutilus, over a 3 week period. Seven Dactylogyrus species were recorded which differed widely in their susceptibility to the effluent. The experiment coincided with a natural spring peak in dactylogyrid infections on roach. BMKE exposure did not prevent parasite reproduction but post-larval abundance was significantly higher on control than effluent-exposed hosts. There was no evidence of a BKME-induced shift in microhabitat distribution of dactylogyrids. Elevated levels of infection with Dactylogyrus spp. have been recorded on roach from a Finnish lake containing relatively low concentrations of BMKE. The high exposure concentration in this experiment produced a similar reduction in dactylogyrid infections to that reported in separate studies in close proximity to Swedish pulp and paper mills. The discrepancy between the results of the Finnish and Swedish field investigations is therefore considered to be due to differences in BKME concentration between the study areas.

The humoral immune response of roach (Rutilus rutilus) to cercariae of the digenean trematode, Rhipidocotyle fennica, was studied. Antibodies against R. fennica were found in wild roach in lakes where fish are infected by the parasite. Antibody levels were higher in sera collected in September than in sera collected in June, due to infection of R. fennica during the late summer. In experimental aquarium studies, roach immunized with homogenized cercariae produced antibodies against R. fennica. An especially strong response was elicited by infecting fish with living cercariae emerging from infected clams. The specificity of the antibodies, as shown in Western blots, was different between fish immunized with homogenized cercariae and those fish infected with living cercariae. The specificity and amount of antibodies depended on the route of immunization. The challenge experiment with R. fennica indicated that previous infection of fish gives some protection against R. fennica.

Les micropolluants métalliques Cd, Cu, Pb et Zn ont été analysés dans plusieurs compartiments inertes et biologiques de l'écosystème de la retenue du Mirgenbach : l'eau, les matières en suspension, le seston décanté, une mousse, un mollusque et trois organes de deux espèces dominantes de poissons. Ce lac artificiel reçoit les eaux échauffées de la centrale nucléaire de Cattenom (Nord-est de la France). L'étang de Lindre et la Meuse amont ont été choisis comme sites de référence. L'ensemble des supports analytiques montre que la retenue est fortement contaminée par le cuivre et à un degré moindre par le plomb et le zinc. Des teneurs importantes de cadmium ont seulement été détectées dans le seston décanté. Les métaux entrant dans la retenue se partagent entre deux phases : la colonne d'eau et les sédiments. Les concentrations élevées observées dans le seston décanté indiquent qu'une fraction importante de chaque métal disparaît de la phase circulante et stagne dans la retenue. Dans le cas du cuivre, une estimation des flux révèle que les deux tiers de ce métal se retrouvent dans les matières décantées. L'homogénéité dans la détection des différents micropolluants dans la moule Dreissena polymorpha Pallas et la mousse Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw. confirme l'intérêt de ces deux organismes comme indicateurs biologiques de la pollution circulante. Les deux poissons, le gardon Rutilus rutilus L. et la perche Perca fluviatilis L., se distinguent par de faibles concentrations métalliques dans le muscle. Bien que certains métaux aient été accumulés dans les organes cibles comme le foie pour le cuivre et le rein pour le plomb, ils peuvent difficilement être considérés comme des organismes sentinelles.
