In this chapter, we discuss various definitions along with key characteristics of work-life balance. Work-life balance is defined from at least five perspectives: (1) equal engagement and satisfaction in work and nonwork domains, (2) engagement in work and nonwork roles compatible with life goals, (3) successful accomplishment of goals in work and nonwork domains, (4) full engagement in multiple life domains, and (5) minimal role conflict between work and nonwork life domains.
This chapter describes how individuals who successfully cope with role conflict manage to achiieve balance and increase their wellbeing. They do so througn stress management techniques related to time-, strain-, and behavior-based conflict.
This chapter focuses on role enrichment strategies designed to enhance life balance. Role enrichment strategies involve the use of skills, experiences, and resources strategies (proven successful in meeting demand in one role) to meet role demand in another role and thus increase satisfaction in that life domain.
