In this paper, a stochastic integral of Ornstein–Uhlenbeck type is represented to be the sum of two independent random variables: one has a tempered stable distribution and the other has a compound Poisson distribution. In distribution, the compound Poisson random variable is equal to the sum of a Poisson-distributed number of positive random variables, which are independent and identically distributed and have a common specified density function. Based on the representation of the stochastic integral, we prove that the transition distribution of the tempered stable Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process is self-decomposable and that the transition density is a C∞-function.

Stochastic processes with Student marginals and various types of dependence structure, allowing for both short- and long-range dependence, are discussed in this paper. A particular motivation is the modelling of risky asset time series.

A number of stationary stochastic processes are presented with properties pertinent to modelling time series from turbulence and finance. Specifically, the one-dimensional marginal distributions have log-linear tails and the autocorrelation may have two or more time scales. Discrete time models with a given marginal distribution are constructed as sums of independent autoregressions. A similar construction is made in continuous time by considering sums of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type processes. To prepare for this, a new property of self-decomposable distributions is presented. Also another, rather different, construction of stationary processes with generalized logistic marginal distributions as an infinite sum of Gaussian processes is proposed. In this way processes with continuous sample paths can be constructed. Multivariate versions of the various constructions are also given.

Discrete minification processes are introduced and it is proved that the discrete first-order autoregression of McKenzie (1986) and the discrete minification process are mutually time-reversible if and only if they have common marginal geometric distribution, corresponding to a result for continuous processes given by Chernick et al. (1988). It is also proved that a discrete minification process is time-reversible if and only if it has marginal Bernoulli distribution.

A general method based on a limit theorem for generation of random numbers from infinitely divisible distributions with essentially given Lévy measure is studied. Some classes of infinitely divisible distributions that appear in a natural way in this context are paid particular attention.

A non-linear stationary stochastic process {Xt} is derived and shown to have the property that both the processes {Xt} and {log Xt} have the same correlation structure, viz. the Markov or first-order autoregressive correlation structure. The generation of such processes is discussed briefly and a characterization of the gamma distribution is obtained.

This paper gives the distribution of the independent variable in a first-order autoregressive equation which is necessary for the modelled variable to have a mixed exponential marginal distribution. Restricting attention first to a mixture of two exponentials which is probabilistic, a solution is shown to exist over a restricted range of the first serial correlation; tabulations of the boundary values are given. The independent variable has a distribution which includes a discrete component at zero and a not necessarily probabilistic mixture of three exponentials. The marginal distribution is then considered with a negative mixture weight; this weight is shown to be lower bounded in value, but not to depend on the first serial correlation.
