Baby boomers were at the forefront of profound social changes in sexual attitudes and many have expressed a desire to remain sexually active throughout their life course. The purpose of this survey study was to assess the perceived preparedness of Ontario’s long-term care (LTC) homes to meet the changing sexuality needs and expectations of LTC residents. We examined sexuality-related attitudes, including in the context of dementia, among 150 LTC administrators. Participants also completed a questionnaire assessing their experiences and perceptions regarding existing and anticipated supports, barriers, and priorities. Most participants demonstrated positive sexual attitudes; however, multiple challenges to meeting residents’ sexuality needs were noted, including assessing capacity to consent, limited privacy, staff training, conflicting attitudes, and a lack of adequate policy and guidelines. Challenges are broad and significant and considerable attention is required to meet the expectations of the next generation of LTC residents, including gender and sexual minority elders.

La clinique générale de l’autisme est bien connue mais le triptyque troubles des interactions sociales, de la communication verbale et non verbale, et intérêts restreints est peu spécifique. La connaissance de particularités sensorielles, sensori-motrices et cognitives est insuffisamment répandue. Pourtant, les arborescences de symptômes singulières pour chaque personne autiste deviennent familières à ses accompagnants proches (parents et professionnels).

Mais tous se trouvent conjoncturellement démunis par des troubles du comportement :

– soit parce que les symptômes de l’autisme sont amplifiés ou modifiés ;

– soit parce que des syndromes psychiatriques s’ajoutent à l’autisme ;

– soit parce que des maladies du corps sont associées à l’autisme (génétiques ou neurologiques) et ont aussi une expression psychique et comportementale.

Ces différentes causes sont souvent confondues dans les services, d’autant plus qu’elles peuvent interférer.

Or les traitements ne sont pas les mêmes, qu’ils soient éducatifs, institutionnels ou médicamenteux. Une approche psychiatrique exclusive sera erronée. Notamment les traitements médicamenteux sont souvent inappropriés, source de conflits entre les professionnels, avec les familles, et aussi, parfois, avec la justice. Inversement, tout rapporter à l’autisme peut nous égarer.

Seront présentés des éléments pour le diagnostic différentiel avec des exemples qui relèvent de ces trois causes :

– ce qui est dû à l’accentuation des troubles autistiques : ici, la poussée de l’adolescence et la sexualité seront des facteurs importants ;

– des maladies psychiatriques que l’on peut reconnaître malgré le mélange avec la pathologie autistique : la comorbidité psychiatrique proprement dite ;

– ce qui relève de la comorbidité somatique d’expression psychiatrique (des maladies organiques : génétiques, neurologiques dont l’épilepsie, et des algies diverses).

Les personnes souffrant de schizophrénie ou de trouble bipolaire ont des taux de mortalité plus élevés que la population générale, tant de cause naturelle que non naturelle (accidentelle, suicide et iatrogénie).

La Fédération française de psychiatrie à la demande de l’HAS a élaboré des recommandations de pratique clinique : comment améliorer la prise en charge somatique des patients ayant une pathologie sévère et chronique.

Nous allons présenter une synthèse de ces recommandations en développant plus particulièrement les modalités de prise en charge des troubles somatiques concernant essentiellement les facteurs de risques cardiovasculaires et le syndrome métabolique.

La réhabilitation du corps dans la prise en charge de l’autisme s’impose peu à peu, d’ autant plus que des connaissances nouvelles en psychologie cognitiviste (corpus de Laurent Mottron) et en physio-psychologie (corpus d’André Bullinger) modifient considérablement la compréhension des troubles autistiques dès la petite enfance. La sexualité envahit à l’adolescence un terrain déjà fort troublé. Des lors, la psychiatrie doit progresser dans le diagnostic différentiel des troubles du comportement à cet âge, entre ce qui relève de l’autisme et ce qui appartient à ses comorbidités psychiatrique et somatique.

Les pratiques intégratives en pédopsychiatrie pour des enfants prennent en compte le corps et en particulier le domaine sensori-moteur. Nous développerons le processus d’évaluation et les interventions thérapeutiques et éducatives qui en découlent. Nous vous exposerons ces éléments à travers la recherche portant sur l’évaluation de ces pratiques que la FFP-CNPP débute avec le soutien de la DGOS par l’intermédiaire d’un PREPS.

We examined ageist beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge towards sexuality in later life among 148 nursing students and 137 social work students in their first year of studies. The students completed the Fraboni Scale of Ageism, the Attitudes and Knowledge towards Older Adults’ Sexuality Scale, and questionnaires regarding contact with older adults, prior sexual education, and socio-demographics. The results indicated that nursing students have more conservative attitudes towards older adults’ sexuality. Ageist beliefs correlated positively with more conservative attitudes towards older adults’ sexuality. These conservative attitudes ’were negatively correlated with knowledge about sexuality in later life. Older students have more knowledge about sexuality in later life and more permissive attitudes towards older adults’ sexuality. Religious students have less knowledge, and more conservative attitudes, towards older adults’ sexuality. Previous sexual education was not associated with the students’ attitudes and knowledge towards older adults’ sexuality. Implications for designing continuing education programs are discussed.

The Divorce Act, 1968, provided no-fault divorce for the first time. It also included a list of fault-based grounds for divorce. In addition to the traditional grounds, a spouse whose wife or husband had “engaged in a homosexual act” during the marriage could petition for divorce. This novel provision was aimed at giving husbands a way to divorce their lesbian wives. A close reading of the resulting jurisprudence and surrounding context shows not only that courts struggled to define the homosexual act between women, but also that the legal history of lesbian women differs from that of gay men in a number of respects. Notably, male homosexuality was regulated primarily through criminal law. In contrast, when parliamentarians specifically addressed lesbians, they turned their minds to the family and family law.

Sexual interest and capacity can extend far into later life and result in many positive health outcomes. Yet there is little support for sexual expression in later life, particularly among young adults. This study assessed and compared young adults’ explicit and implicit attitudes towards older adult sexuality. A sample of 120 participants (18–24 years; 58% female) completed a self-report (explicit) measure and a series of Implicit Association Tests capturing attitudes towards sexuality among older adults. Despite reporting positive explicit attitudes, young people revealed an implicit bias against the sexual lives of older adults. In particular, young adults demonstrated implicit biases favouring general, as compared to sexual, activities and young adults as compared to older adults. Moreover, the bias favouring general activities was amplified with regard to older adults as compared to younger adults. Our findings challenge the validity of research relying on self-reports of attitudes about older adult sexuality.

This article examines what happens when non-normative genders and sexualities collide with the complicated world of criminal procedure. Grounded in a close reading of Forrester v. Peel (Regional Municipality) Police Services Board, a recent decision in which a trans detainee alleged discrimination in services on the basis of “sex,” the article connects strip searches to a larger system of corporeal power. Trans bodies are targeted not merely because they are perceived as different but also because of what that difference symbolizes: a failure of the regimes that regulate bodies into a sharp, essentialist gender binary. As such, trans bodies become a key site for simultaneous observation, normalization, and examination not only by the police but also by society at large.

In this article, we examine the existing sociocultural research and theory concerned with the aging body. In particular, we review the body image and embodiment literatures and discuss what is known about how older adults perceive and experience their aging bodies. We analyse how body image is shaped by age, culture, ethnicity, gender, health status, sexual preference, and social class. Additionally, we critically elucidate the embodiment literature as it pertains to illness experiences, sexuality, the everyday management of the aging body, appearance work, and embodied identity. By outlining the key findings, theoretical debates, and substantive discrepancies within the body image and embodiment research and theory, we identify gaps in the literature and forecast future, much-needed avenues of investigation.

This study compared the attitudes of adult children toward the sexuality of their older parents with their parent's own attitudes toward sexuality. A 56-item questionnaire was given to 41 family pairs consisting of a parent over age 65 and his or her son or daughter. Questions were based upon previous studies and involved six point Likért ratings. In general, attitudes toward sexuality were positive among parents and their adult children. However, adult children had significantly more positive attitudes than their parents. This difference was primarily due to more positive attitudes toward physical aspects of sexual behaviours. Overall, the disapproval and negative attitudes of adult children reported in previous research were not found in this study. Adult children had positive attitudes, much more positive attitudes than their parents, possibly due to a cohort effect

Rates of sexual activity have been found to decline over the life course, as individuals experience marital transitions and the loss of partners, health problems, and decreased sexual interest. This article compares and contrasts earlier- and later-life sexual experiences and examines the changing meanings that older women ascribe to sexuality over the life course. Qualitative data from a study involving 24 women aged 52 to 90 who were remarried after age 50 illuminate a shift, as individuals age, from an emphasis on the importance of sexual intercourse and passion to a greater valuing of companionship, cuddling, affection, and intimacy. Situating the discussion in the context of changing cultural norms and sexual scripts, the article investigates the impact of health conditions on the women's sexual relationships as well as the women's tendency to have later-life sexual experiences more positive than were their earlier sexual experiences.

In confined environments, the precocious reproductive efficiency of "tilapias" (various cichlid species belonging to the genera Oreochromis, Sarotherodon and Tilapia) can rapidly lead to overcrowding and nanism. Therefore, the artificial control of reproduction in these species is very important for success in their culture. Such a control may consist either in completely preventing fry production in a population, in order to improve growth, or in favouring synchronous massive productions of alevins, in order to set up cultures with homogeneous populations.

At present, some of the most intensive techniques are based on the separate rearing of male fish, either after manual sorting or following hormonal inversion treatments leading to monosex populations. New ways of obtaining a male monosex progeny are suggested, based on the viability and fertility of a new genotype YY. Recent data on the sex differentiation of tilapia gonad suggest the possible use of steroids which have been identified in vitro during the early stages of development of the testis and which exhibit high masculinizing potentialities; these studies also suggest the tentative use of specific inhibitors of the activity of some of the enzymes involved in the synthesis of the above mentioned steroids.

The occurrence of parental care is an important factor in the reproductive efficiency of tilapias. Recent data show close relationships between the chronology of the mouth-brooding behaviour in Oreochromis, and that of the ovarian cycle. A better knowledge of the underlying physiological factors may facilitate the development of new techniques for the inhibition and/or the synchronization of reproduction.

Identification and taxonomy of the genus Leishmania is considered in brief, drawing on existing review articles. A fully-referenced synopsis of clinical, epidemiological, biological, immunological and biochemical criteria and methods used for typing leishmanial parasites is given and discussed. Classical and modern approaches are compared. Leishmanial phylogeny, the value of numerical taxonomy and the possibility of sexual recombination in leishmanial organisms are also considered.
