Precise measurement of the fundamental parameters of stellar systems, including mass and radius, depends critically on how well the stellar distances are known. Astrometry from space provides parallax measurements of unprecented accuracy, from which distances can be derived, initially from the Hipparcos mission, with a further refinement of that analysis provided by van Leeuwen in 2007. The publication of the Gaia DR2 catalogue promises a dramatic improvement in the available data. We have recalculated the dynamical masses of a sample of 1 700 close visual binary stars using Gaia DR2 and compared the results with masses derived from both the original and enhanced Hipparcos data. We show the van Leeuwen analysis yields results close to those of Gaia DR2, but the latter are significantly more accurate. We consider the impact of the Gaia DR2 parallaxes on our understanding of the sample of visual binaries.

We present the preliminary findings of an investigation of the multiplicity of debris disk stars identified within our Volume-limited A-star (VAST) multiplicity survey. Previous studies have produced conflicting results regarding the multiplicity fraction of debris disk-hosting stars compared with non-excess stars. By combining our large-scale volume-limited AO survey of A-type stars with the all-sky WISE catalogue, we have investigated the frequency of binary companions to a large sample of A-type stars with and without measured 22μm excess. The results of this study will allow for a greater understanding of the interaction between a companion star and a circumstellar debris disk, informing future study into the formation and stability of planetary-mass companions within binary systems.

A sample of about 160 speckle binary stars was observed with the Keck I telescope and its Échelle HIRES spectrograph over the years 2003-2007 in an effort to detect substellar and planetary companions to components of binary and multiple star systems. This data set was supplemented with the data obtained at the TNG telescope equipped with the SARG Échelle spectrograph over the years 2006-2007. The high-resolution (R = 65000 for HIRES and R = 86000 for SARG) and high signal-to-noise (typically 75-150) spectra were used to derive radial velocities of the components of the observed speckle binaries. Here, we present a summary of this effort, which includes the discovery of new triple star systems and improved orbital solutions of a few known binaries.

White dwarfs are the evolutionary end product of stars with low and intermediate masses. The evolution of white dwarfs can be understood as a cooling process, which is relatively well known at the moment. For this reason, wide binaries containing white dwarfs are a powerful tool to constrain stellar ages. We have studied several wide binaries containing white dwarfs with two different purposes: when the age of the companion of the white dwarf can be determined with accuracy, we use the binary to improve the knowledge about the white dwarf member. On the contrary, if the companion is a low-mass star with no age indicator available, the white dwarf member itself is used to calibrate the age of the system. In this contribution we present some results using both methodologies to constrain the ages of wide binaries.

The spectroscopic binary observing program of the Mark III Optical Interferometer has produced four published orbits and 22 preliminary orbits. The mean (formal) precision is 0.3% for measurements of sin i and 0.7% for measurements of the semimajor axis a. We list the stars for which we have obtained orbits or preliminary orbits and describe our data and uncertainty analysis techniques.
