Litter breakdown is an important ecological process at the bottom of food webs in streams. Previous studies have been based only on a temporal interval of a single season, thus ignoring seasonal variation in litter input and community structure. We investigated organic matter input in a Brazilian savanna stream and the influence of its associated hyphomycetes on the invertebrate community. Organic matter input was sampled monthly and the leaves submitted to decomposition experiments. There were lower breakdown rates and higher invertebrate species richness and abundance during the dry season, which reached their maximum in July due to low stream discharge. Invertebrate composition was best explained by hyphomycetes (mainly by Flagellospora curvula and Anguillospora filiformis). Hyphomycetes have the capacity to degrade complex compounds of litter and to rapidly absorb nutrients by growing branched filaments, thus making the leaves more favourable for consumption by invertebrates. Shredder abundance was negatively related to litter richness, indicating possible species-specific relationships. We observed a sequential process with increased leaf litter input promoting an increase in hyphomycetes biomass, which in turn favoured invertebrate density.

Resource availability influences the flow of energy through food webs, thus affecting biomass and trophic structure of consumer communities. To assess the effect of availability of allochthonous (leaf litter) and autochthonous (periphyton) resources on the trophic structure of macroinvertebrates, we sampled monthly for a year two sites (upstream forested, downstream open canopy) of Challhuaco, a low order mountain stream in the Patagonian Andes. Leaf litter and periphyton dynamics showed the expected pattern, peaking in autumn and spring, respectively. Temporal variations of shredders and scrapers were synchronized, with the logic delay, with resource abundance. Although leaf litter mass was similar at both stream reaches, shredders were more abundant at the forest site. Periphyton biomass was higher at the forest, while scrapers were more abundant at the open site. The patterns of resource and consumer abundance, and community functional structure were mostly explained by the interaction of abiotic factors and trophic relationships.

We compared reproductive characteristics of the dendrobatid frog Colostethus trinitatis at the Tamana cave in the Central Range hills and at five forest stream sites in the Northern Range hills of Trinidad. There were significant differences between sites in adult female body size, intraovarian clutch size (in absolute terms and relative to body size) and the size of tadpoles carried by male frogs. Clutch sizes ranged from 6 to 13 in the Northern Range samples and from 12 to 26 at Tamana. Adult male body size was similar at all sites. Tadpoles carried by male C. trinitatis at Tamana were significantly smaller (mean length 14.2 mm) than those carried by males at the five Northern range sites (mean length 16.4–16.7 mm). The smallest clutches and largest tadpoles were found at Mount St Benedict, where there was evidence of size-selective predation on tadpoles by fish. Tamana, where clutches were large and tadpoles small, differed from the Northern Range sites in terms of the physical environment (cave vs forest) and the abundance of invertebrates. We discuss possible ultimate and proximate causes of the differences in clutch size and tadpole size, particularly size-selective predation and availability of food.

Fish communities of a fourth order stream impounded by a weir were studied in Southern Nigeria. Fifty-eight species were recorded of which 90% occurred upstream while reservoir and downstream accounted for 48% and 43% respectively. The distribution of some fish families indicated the effects of habitat alterations caused by reservoir and downstream conditions. The fauna upstream was different from that of reservoir and downstream. Relative abundance of non-cichlids common to reservoir and downstream showed 42% similarity. The longitudinal distribution of three non-cichlid populations was different in reservoir and downstream. Non-cichlid species richness was almost similar in reservoir and downstream, but its general diversity and evenness were higher in reservoir than its downstream. Fish community changes in this stream are discussed.

We tested the individual and joint effects of stream order, riverbed morphology (i.e. pool-riffle sequence), and season on the structural (i.e. species composition, density and richness) and functional (i.e. percent ratio of shredders, collectors, scrapers, and predators) properties of caddisfly assemblages in a closely natural headwater system (Börzsöny Mts., North Hungary). Each factor, both individually and in interaction had a significant effect on caddisfly assemblages as shown by MANOVA analyses. To clarify the effects of stream order, riverbed morphology and season on caddisflies, assemblage properties were also separately studied by ANOVAs. Percent ratio of shredders and collectors were strongly affected by all factors, whereas other attributes were not always sensitive to stream order, season and riverbed morphology. In contrast, species compositions of the reaches differing in stream order and riverbed morphology were significantly different. Our findings on the contrasting differences in shredder composition between riffles and pools may suggest that not only riparian vegetation, but also instream habitat features could shape the accumulation and retention of particulate organic matter (in streams with pool-riffle heterogeneity).

Tropical island streams worldwide are being threatened by existing or proposed dams and diversions. Numerous streams of the Hawaiian Islands have diversions that remove freshwater for human use; however, little research has addressed diversion effects on aquatic insect communities in tropical streams. We studied the effect of water removal by a stream diversion on density and biomass of two introduced Trichoptera, Cheumatopsyche analis (Banks) (Hydropsychidae) and Hydroptila potosina (Buenoa-Soria) (Hydroptilidae), in Iao Stream, Maui, Hawaii, from April-August 2000. Both species seem to have multivoltine life cycles. Pooled Trichoptera (both species) biomass was significantly greater above the diversion (178.3 mg.m-2 and 112.9 mg.m-2 for upstream and downstream, respectively). For each individual species the mean total instar biomass was significantly reduced below the diversion (38 % and 54 % reduction for C. analis and H. potosina, respectively). Both species had greater densities above the diversion; however, individual larval mass of H. potosina instars, but not C. analis instars, was significantly lower below the diversion. Our results suggest that reduced habitat quality, due to lowered stream flow, limits density of both species below the diversion, whereas lowered food quantity and quality may differentially affect H. potosina biomass through reduced body sizes. These data suggest that water removal not only reduces habitat quality, but significantly lowers the community biomass of these introduced Trichoptera species, affecting the trophic energetics of stream reaches downstream of a diversion in Hawaii. Similar changes to macroinvertebrate communities would be expected below dams and diversions of streams in other tropical regions.

The aim of our paper was to study the space and time variations of phosphorus contents in the sediment, water and tissue of aquatic plants. Tissue Total Phosphorus of six aquatic plants (Callitriche platycarpa, C. hamulata, C. obtusangula, Elodea nuttallii, E. canadensis and Ranunculus peltatus) was analysed alongside the sediment Total Phosphorus (TP) and Soluble Reactive Phosphorus concentrations (SRP) in water, at the same site. Twelve sites were selected, and, samples were collected to test the seasonal and the annual patterns of phosphorus variation in 3 compartments. Streams ranged from oligotrophic to eutrophic waters. The sediments varied from mesotrophic to eutrophic states. A highly significant site effect was shown for water and for sediment. Water SRP varied with time (season, year), whereas no significant time effect was established for the sediment TP. Tissue TP varied according to year and season in Callitriche platycarpa, C. hamulata and E. nuttallii. The tissue phosphorus storage depended on the trophic level of sediment and water and varied according to species. The rank order of tissue TP content was C. obtusangula > R. peltatus ≥ E. nuttallii ≥ E. canadensis > C. platycarpa > C. hamulata. Removal of aquatic plants biomass with its accumulated phosphorus could be an alternative technique to other eutrophication control strategies. Further work is needed to improve our knowledge to estimate the ecological risk of harvesting on biodiversity and on ecosystem function.

Two greenhouses were operated as emergence traps in a stream in southwestern Lower Austria from 1984 to 1989 at a distanceof 28 m from each other. The stream bed under the traps was covered by a metal sheet alternately for one year, thus preventingemergence under the trap with covered bottom so that insects caught in this trap must have come from outside. Theresults have shown that insects from outside constitute a high but un quantifiable proportion of the total catch. In many instancesthere were more insects in the trap with a covered stream bed than in the open one. Therefore the emergence trap method is notadequate for quantitative surface-related studies, including secondary production.

Emergence traps were operated over three years in a stream near Lunz in southwestern Lower Austria, to find out the differences between eight types of traps. Trichoptera, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, Simuliidae, Limoniidae and Empididae were compared quantitatively as whole groups. Trichoptera, Limoniidae and aquatic Empididae were compared at species level. Except for the expected statistical variation, there was wide variation in the number of specimens between groups and species, and also between the trap types, to such a degree that the emergence method appears to be of limited value for productivity or other quantitativestudies. The total catch of insects caught in the traps, consisted of freshly emerged adults, aged ovipositing females and many other insects (including terrestrial ones) which entered the traps in unknown ways. The variation may depend on the biology and behaviour of the insects, on the design of the traps and on an unknown number of other factors.

The distribution and ecological data base of Vaucheria bursata, V. frigida, V. geminata, V. racemosa, V. erytrospora, V. canalicularis,and V. debaryana occurring in streams of the Kraków-Czestochowa Upland (Poland) are provided.

Eighteen collections of red-coloured Audouinella from Central Mexico and southeastern Brazil detected three species. The most common species, A. eugenea, is characterized by macroscopic thalli, the erect system consisting of filaments with cylindrical cells, undifferentiated into proximal and distal parts, and relatively large monosporangia ([ges ] 12·0 μm long). Spermatangia and possible propagules were observed in some Mexican populations. This is the third Audouinella species observed to have gametangia and the first member of the Acrochaetiales with putative propagules. The second species, from Central Mexico, was characterized by the following features: macroscopic thalli, the erect system differentiated into proximal parts with cylindrical cells, unbranched or rarely branched, and distal parts with barrel-shaped cells, abundantly branched to form dense fascicles, with alternate or dichotomous branching, some at right-angles to the axis, and relatively large monosporangia ([ges ] 12·0 μm long). The morphologically distinct proximal and distal portions of the erect system, the latter forming dense fascicles, was a consistent character so far unknown in Audouinella; thus, we propose a new species, A. huastecana sp. nov. The third species is a microscopic epiphyte, A. meiospora, with a well-developed prostrate system composed of creeping and loosely aggregated filaments, and a short homogeneous erect system ([les ] 15 cells) of filaments with cylindrical or barrel-shaped cells and small monosporangia ([les ] 13·0 μm long). A. eugenea and A. meiospora are characterized for the first time from the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, respectively, both occurring mostly in areas of tropical or subtropical rainforests. A. meiospora is reported from new macroalgal hosts. A. eugenea and A. huastecana tended to occur in warm, alkaline waters with a high ion content that were moderate to fast flowing, whereas A. meiospora was not associated with particular habitats.

Les macroinvertébrés benthiques sont couramment utilisés dans le domaine de la bioindication. Pourtant les méthodes indicielles globales ne permettent pas de poser un diagnostic sur les causes réelles de dégradation. Cette étude propose donc d'intégrer les avancées théoriques récentes mettant en relation les stratégies biologiques des organismes (reproduction, durée de vie, habitudes alimentaires et respiratoires) avec les perturbations de leur environnement. Cette approche a été appliquée à la Chalaronne, un cours d'eau soumis à des effluents d'une station d'épuration. L'analyse biocénotique, basée sur l'abondance des taxons, permet de séparer les stations amont des stations aval puisque 17,9 % de la variabilité totale du tableau de données y est consacrée. Au niveau fonctionnel, l'utilisation des traits biologiques définis pour chaque taxon permet une meilleure séparation amont - aval, puisque la valeur obtenue est de 23,1 %. Cet exemple nous montre que la structure fonctionnelle observée en amont correspond à des caractéristiques de résilience. Au contraire la structure fonctionnelle observée en aval correspond à des caractéristiques de résistance. L'approche fonctionnelle présente donc deux intérêts : d'une part elle permet une bonne discrimination des situations étudiées, d'autre part elle ouvre des perspectives intéressantes pour l'étude des fonctionnalités biologiques des écosystèmes.

The final phase of spawning migration of eight adult male Atlantic salmon, Sulnio solar L., was analysed by radio-tracking in relation to sea age and size in a spawning tributary of the Kiver Sélune. Four grilse and four multi sea-winter fish, one of which as a previous spawner, were radio-tagged and released. Their fork length ranged from 602 to 882 mm. The daily movement in the first two days alier release and the furthest upstream distance recorded from the trap during the study period were independent of fish length. Maximum amplitude of movement observed over the entire study period was inversely correlated with length. Daily movement decreased in all males during the spawning period and was negatively correlated with the size of fish. Surviving males remained in the vicinity of the spawning grounds after spawning. It was concluded that the length of male seemed to influence its behaviour in the last phase of the spawning migration, enabling a much more successful participation of the larger males in spawning.

Distribution and ecology of macroinvertebrates in the Opunohu River catchment (17°31'S, 149°S 50'W), Moorea, French Polynesia, were studied at eight sites, which range in altitude from 2 to 335 m, and from 0.4 to 4.0 km distance from the ocean. Taxa richness per site ranged from 16 to 28, and was higher in austral spring than austral fall ; 48 taxa were collected over all sites and included 7 species of molluscs, 6 crustaceans, 23 insects, and 6 oligochaetes. Neritid snails and atyid and palaemonid shrimp in the Opunohu have diadromous life cycles : they enter freshwater as juveniles and migrate upstream ; their larval offspring must return to the sea for growth and metamorphosis. These groups generally had larger individuals at upstream than at downstream sites. Human activities such as channeling stream flow through elevated culverts can impede normal upstream migration of diadromous species. Densities of neritid egg capsules were higher in riffle than pool habitats, exhibited seasonality, and were highest at the downstream-most site ; abundance at upstream sites also reflected local habitat conditions. Microhabitat segregation of two species of atyiid shrimp reflected their respective filter-feeding and detritus-gathering feeding mechanisms. High pH and temperatures in the poorly buffered, cascade headwaters produced high seston loads (3.4 mg/l) that mainly contained diatoms ; in downstream reaches seston concentrations were lower and contained more detritus. Some filter-feeding black fly species occured only in the headwaters. Insect taxa-richness was higher in headwater reaches while mollusc and crustacean richness was higher at sites near the ocean, which supports a tenet of the River Continuum Concept.
