Summary

8 MSS; A (27r) no heading; song immediately follows vida, C (347r) Hue de la bacallaria (C Reg. hue de la bacalaria, with ‘Bertran de sayshac’ and ‘marc e bru’ added to the right in the first index), G (115r) no heading, K (102r-v) no heading; song immediately follows vida, N (269r-v) no heading, R (5r) marc e bru, a1 (460) bertran de pessars, d (301v-302t) Marcabrus, In the index to I the song is attributed to Marcabru, but the relevant folio is missing. In G the first stanza is set out with space for staves which have not been added.

In C the removal of a vignette has mutilated lines 19–33.

* Attributed to Uc de la Bacalaria, also cited in Breviari, ed. Ricketts, 32244-49, ed. Richter, p. 304 no. 139.

** Attributed to Uc de la Bacalaria, also cited in Breviari, ed. Ricketts, 32251–56, ed. Richter, p. 305 no. 140.

Attribution

The agreement of C with the Breviari is unsurprising, but the attribution to Uc de la Bacalaria is unlikely given his dates (late twelfth century), and is undermined by the two other attributions in C Reg, which must be the result of collation with other sources. This is the only song attributed to Bertran de Saissac (PC 90; see Roncaglia, ‘Due postille’, p. 72). Bertran de Pessars (PC 86) also seems to be a ‘troubadour fantôme’: his name appears only in a1 where this song and PC 183.11 are attributed to him. There can be no serious doubt that this song is the work of Marcabru, although the reasons for the misattributions are obscure.

Analysis of the manuscripts

The main divergence between the MSS lies in the amount of material transmitted, though C innovates in lines 34, 35, 36, 39, 41 and has other minor isolated readings in 2 (error), 5, 10, 16, and so on. It shows affinities with a1 in 12 and 25, with Ga1 in 2 and GRa1 in 14. G lacks the last three stanzas and contains a number of mistakes (3, 4, 9, 10, 15, and so on); a1 lacks the last two and also contains individual errors (3, 15, 18, 21, and so on). AT and R have a few smal mistakes (35 and 41 may be common errors) but offer no interesting alternative readings.
