Summary
This chapter analyzes the development of secularism in France and discusses how it framed French state policies toward the Muslim minority. It also identifies the major characteristics of French secularism in reference to its relationship to state policies toward the Muslim minority. The chapter also reviews the policy shifts that restricted Muslims’ manifestations of religious symbols in France in the 2000s.
