Summary
As we shift our focus from Asia and the Middle East toward Europe, we encounter a world region where the Soviet challenge to the West had caused virtually all regional conflicts. This included the ideological competition between two economic blocs of Western and Eastern Europe, Germany’s division, and the struggle over borders, human rights, and religion. Although Part VI (Chapters 17–19) reveals how the regional Cold Wars of Asia, the Middle East, and Europe were connected to each other in a myriad of ways, they were most clearly linked in the field of nuclear weapons (Chapter 14).
