from Part III - Family Intervention for Specific Child and Adolescent Mental Health Problems
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 18 February 2021
Eating disorders are pernicious mental disorders that typically develop during adolescence or young adulthood and most often require specialty treatment. Family-based treatment is the leading evidence-based treatment for youth with anorexia nervosa, with mounting empirical support for its implementation among youth with bulimia nervosa. This chapter describes parental engagement within family-based treatment for eating disorders, along with a summary of the extant literature on empirically supported family-based eating disorder interventions. The chapter also characterizes core clinician competencies that contribute to treatment outcomes and concludes with a description of how family interventions are expanding and adapting to improve treatment among youth with eating disorders.
