Independent Bangladesh now set to building a new national identity. The prevailing mood was that the inhabitants were Bengalis first and Muslims next. The new society should be ordered in accordance with principles that had been developed in the West and could be adapted to local circumstances: democracy, socialism and secularism. The Bengal delta’s regional culture and language became Bangladesh’s national culture.
