Summary
This chapter reviews the Eastern African lithic record. Using stone tool evidence from more than 250 Eastern African archaeological lithic assemblages (Figures 5.1 and 5.2), it finds numerous mismatches between that evidence and archaeologists’ assumptions about differences among age-stages. The chapter introduces the East African Stone Tool (EAST) Typology, a framework specifically designed to improve our understanding of stone tool variation.
