The archbishop's summons
[294] Willelmus etc., discretis viris Magistris Adae de Wambergh de Ashbury et Iohanni de Wolveley de Areton803 ecclesiarum rectoribus salutem cum benedictione Salvatoris. Literas venerabilis patris domini Londoniensis episcopi recepimus sub his verbis:
Venerabili in Christo patri W[illelmo], Dei gratia Wintoniensi episcopo, Radulphus eiusdem permissione Londoniensis episcopus, salutem et sincerae dilectionis continuum incrementum. Mandatum venerabilis patris et domini Domini Iohannis, Dei gratia Cantuariensis archiepiscopi, totius Angliae primatis et apostolicae sedis legati recepimus continens hunc tenorem:
Iohannes, permissione divina Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas et apostolicae sedis legatus venerabili fratri nostro Domino Radulpho, Dei gratia Londoniensi episcopo salutem et fraternam in Domino caritatem. Quantum nobis ex Altissimo permittitur adversus excessus qui post ultimum provincial concilium dudum per nos Londoniis celebratum in detrimentum ecclesiae atque cleri emerserunt noviter medelam adhibere congruam desiderantes intense pro huiusmodi corrigendis excessibus et moribus reformandis provinciale concilium de quorundam suflraganeorum nostrorum coepiscoporum assensu a concilio fore decrevimus celebrando, ut in eo deprivata contra statum seu libertatem ecclesiae ac contra clerum sive viros ecclesiasticos nostrae provinciae attemptata perversae lima corrections debite reformetur, et fiant in eo, adiuvante Domino, quae facienda flierint secundum canonicas sanctiones. Quocirca fraternitati vestrae committimus et mandamus quod venerabiles fratres nostros episcopos et electos confirmatos vel si qui eorum forsan absentes fuerint, vicarios eorum in spiritualibus generales, citetis seu faciatis citari peremptorie decanos vero et priores ecclesiarum cathedralium, abbates etiam et priores electivos sub se plenum conventum habentes, ecnon archidiaconos, capitula, conventus et collegia universa clerumque cuiuscunque diocesis nostrae provinciae antedictae praemunire curetis vel faciatis debite praemuniri, quod iidem episcopi electi seu vicarii eorum personaliter, decanique et priores ecclesiarum cathedralium, necnon abbates et priores alii sub se (ut praemittitur) plenum conventum habentes, necnon archidiaconi cuiuslibet diocesis per duos procuratores idoneos, si sua crediderint interesse et causas vel negotia habuerint in concilio huiusmodi provinciali tractanda, coram nobis et dicto concilio legitime compareant in ecclesia Sancti Pauli Londoniarum [295] primo die iuridico post festum Sancti Hieronymi confessoris proximo futurum [1 October 1347] super praemissis omnibus et singulis et aliis tune exponendis ibidem statum ecclesiarum religionis et cleri dictae nostrae provinciae morum correctionem et depravatorum reformationem huiusmodi concernentibus tractaturi, suaque sanum et deliberatum consilium impensuri, praebiturique consensum his quae, inspirante Domino, ibidem utiliter contigerit ordinari, ulteriusque facturi et recepturi, cum continuatione et prorogatione dierum tune sequentium usque ad finem eiusdem concilii quod iustitia suadebit.
