Summary

The royal writ for a parliament on 17 April 1357

Rex venerabili in Christo Simoni, eadem gratia archiepiscopo Cantuariensi, totius Angliae primati, salutem. Quia pro quibusdam arduis et urgentibus negotiis nos et statum regni nostri Angliae ac necessariam defensionem eiusdem regni et Ecclesiae Anglicanae concernentibus, ordinavimus parliamentum nostrum apud Westmonasterium die Lunae proximo post septimanam Paschae proximo futuro [ 17 April 1357] tenere et vobiscum et cum ceteris praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus dicti regni nostri Angliae habere colloquium et tractatum, vobis in fide et dilectione quibus nobis tenemini firmiter iniungendo mandamus quatenus, cessante excusatione quacunque, dictis die et loco personaliter intersitis nobiscum ac cum dictis praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus dicti regni super negotiis praedictis tractaturi, vestrumque consilium impensuri. Et hoc sicut nos et honorem nostrum ac commune commodum et salvationem et defensionem dicti regni nostri Angliae diligitis, nullatenus omittatis, praemunientes priorem et capitulum ecclesiae vestrae Christi Cantuariensis ac archdiaconos totumque clerum vestrae diocesis, quod iidem prior et archidiaconi in propriis personis suis ac dictum capitulum per unum, idemque clerus per duos procuratores idoneos plenam et sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero habentes, praedictis die et loco personaliter intersint, ad faciendum et consentiendum his quae tune de communi consilio, favente Domino, ordinari contigerit super negotiis antedictis. Et quia propter arduitatem negotiorum praedictorum et celeriorem expeditionem eorundem, volumus primo die parliamenti personaliter interesse, nolumus nee intendimus vos aut aliquem alium ad dictum parliamentum summonitum quin eodem primo die personaliter intersitis habere ullo modo excusatos, nee excusationem a vobis admittere aliqualem. Teste rege apud Westmonasterium, quintodecimo die Februarii [15 February 1357]. Per ipsum regem et concilium.

Benedictos principes laudibus extollere condecet, quorum manus Deus ad proelium docuit, et digitos ad bellum instruxit, ut militaribus actibus intenti, de divino sperantes auxilio suis laboribus suos protegerent subditos, et ab inimicorum iniuriis conservarent illaesos, ecclesiamque sub tarn felici munimine constitutam eo liberius pro eis pias Deo preces effundere,
