Summary
It is impossible to name a single ritual category which adequately captures sacraments, such as baptism, marriage, oaths, penal sentences, declarations of death, or excommunications. Many categories applicable to sacraments help to understand their ritual function, such as magical rites, rites of passage, rites of status conferral and deferral, or purification rites.
