Summary
It is insightful to interpret sacraments with the help of speech act theory as illocutionary speech which constitutes certain effects based on conventional procedures including the uttering of certain words by authorised persons under certain circumstances. While it embraces assertive, directive, commissive, and expressive elements, sacramental speech is declarative at its core, using words and gestures to signify a certain reality while constituting it.
