Summary

ABSTRACT. With a University founded in 1385, Zadar was the metropolis of the eastern Adriatic, whose economic links (Senj for wood, Ancona for a presence in North Africa) faced the sea. But in the 15th century, Venice transformed Zadar into a dreary administrative centre. The transit-trade function of Split between the hinterland and the sea grew at the end of the century, thanks to the foundation of the port of call in 1592. Split became an intermediary between the Ottoman world and the Adriatic sea. This was not a local initiative, but the result of Venetian adaptation to the challenge of the Atlantic Ocean.
