‘World War III?’ or ‘A nuclear holocaust?’. These are among the favourite questions of journalists when they ask about the endgame of Iran’s recurrent confrontations with the United States. ‘Only fools rush in’ tends to be my answer, but unfortunately there is plenty of foolishness about, both in Washington DC and among decision-makers in Tehran. The signposts of the dangerous situation that this book addresses with alternatives for peace and understanding are indeed a threat to the whole world. This is the main reason why Iran is ‘shocking’ so many people. The present book looks at palliative therapies to smooth out some of these emotional reactions that our topic provokes. To that end, the book was intensely reviewed and scrutinised like no other of my previous attempts to address the Iranian presence in world politics and global history. No one is indifferent about Iran and Iranians, or so it seems.
