Appendix II - List of Works Known to William at First Hand

Summary

ABBO OF FLEURY, Passio S. Edmundi: GR 213; GP 73. 16, 74. 20–6, 115. 7. ‘Accipe astrolabii quartam’. This is one of a collection of astronomical works copied into Bodl. Libr. MS Auct. F. 3. 14, ff. 153–64v, from a single source. The collection is headed ‘Incipiunt regulae de astrolabio’ and consists of: (i) Prol. and text of De Utilitate Astrolabii, variously ascribed to Gerbert, Hermann the Lame, etc. (TKI 513, 1236), ending with the last chapter of Bk. I as PL 143. 389–404; (ii) De Horologio secundum Alkoran (TKI 654; N. Bubnov, Gerberti Opera Mathematica [Berlin, 1899], pp. xix, xli; Millas Vallicrosa, Assaig, pp. 288–90); (iii) ‘Si fuerit nobis propositum inuenire’ (TKI 1449; Millas Vallicrosa, pp. 324–7); (iv) ‘Accipe astrolabii quartam et tertiam vi. hora’ (TKI 16; Bubnov, Gerberti Opera Mathematica, p. lvi; Millas Vallicrosa, pp. 304–8); (v) Compositio Astrolapsus (TKI 801; Millas Vallicrosa, pp. 322–4). These works, in the same order, are known in only one other MS, Avranches, Bibl. mun. 235, ff. 58–69v, late twelfth-century, from Mont Saint-Michel. Millas Vallicrosa printed them from this MS, and collation with his edition shows that William used the same exemplar as the scribe of the Avranches MS. It has recently been suggested that at least some of the items common to the two MSS came originally from Reims: Contreni, ‘The Study and Practice of Medicine in Northern France during the Reign of Charles the Bald’, pp. 43–54, esp. p. 45.
