We provide a qualitative analysis of a system of nonlinear differential equations that model the spread of alcoholism through a population. Alcoholism is viewed as an infectious disease and the model treats it within a sir framework. The model exhibits two generic types of steady-state diagram. The first of these is qualitatively the same as the steady-state diagram in the standard sir model. The second exhibits a backwards transcritical bifurcation. As a consequence of this, there is a region of bistability in which a population of problem drinkers can be sustained, even when the reproduction number is less than one. We obtain a succinct formula for this scenario when the transition between these two cases occurs.

As a possible model for fluid turbulence, a Reiner–Rivlin-type equation is used to study Poiseuille–Couette flow of a viscous fluid in a rotating cylindrical pipe. The equations of motion are derived in cylindrical coordinates, and small-amplitude perturbations are considered in full generality, involving all three velocity components. A new matrix-based numerical technique is proposed for the linearized problem, from which the stability is determined using a generalized eigenvalue approach. New results are obtained in this cylindrical geometry, which confirm and generalize the predictions of previous recent studies. A possible mechanism for the transition to turbulent flow is discussed.

The human retina is supplied by two vascular systems: the highly vascular choroidal, situated behind the retina; and the retinal, which is dependent on the restriction that the light path must be minimally disrupted. Between these two circulations, the avascular retinal layers depend on diffusion of metabolites through the tissue. Oxygen supply to these layers may be threatened by diseases affecting microvasculature, for example diabetes and hypertension, which may ultimately cause loss of sight.

An accurate model of retinal blood flow will therefore facilitate the study of retinal oxygen supply and, hence, the complications caused by systemic vascular disease. Here, two simple models of the blood flow and exchange of hydrogen with the retina are presented and compared qualitatively with data obtained from experimental measurements. The models capture some interesting features of the exchange and highlight effects that will need to be considered in a more sophisticated model and in the interpretation of experimental results.

John Blake (1947–2016) was a leader in fluid mechanics, his two principal areas of expertise being biological fluid mechanics on microscopic scales and bubble dynamics. He produced leading research and mentored others in both Australia, his home country, and the UK, his adopted home. This article reviews John Blake’s contributions in biological fluid mechanics, as well as gives the author’s personal viewpoint as one of the many graduate students and researchers who benefitted from his supervision, guidance and inspiration. The key topics from biological mechanics discussed are: “squirmer” models of protozoa, the method of images in Stokes flow and the “blakelet” solution, discrete cilia modelling via slender body theory, physiological flows in respiration and reproduction, blinking stokeslets in microorganism feeding, human sperm motility and embryonic nodal cilia.

We consider an initial–boundary value problem that involves a partial differential equation with a functional term. The problem is motivated by a cell division model for size structured cell cohorts in which growth and division occur. Although much is known about the large time asymptotic behaviour of solutions to these problems for constant growth rates, general solution techniques are rare. We analyse the case where the growth rate is linear and the division rate is a monomial, and we develop a method to determine the general solution for a general class of initial data. The large time dynamics of solutions for this case are significantly different from the constant growth rate case. We show that solutions approach a time-dependent attracting solution that is periodic in the time variable.

Mealybug is an important pest of cassava plant in Thailand and tropical countries, leading to severe damage of crop yield. One of the most successful controls of mealybug spread is using its natural enemies such as green lacewings, where the development of mathematical models forecasting mealybug population dynamics improves implementation of biological control. In this work, the Sharpe–Lotka–McKendrick equation is extended and combined with an integro-differential equation to study population dynamics of mealybugs (prey) and released green lacewings (predator). Here, an age-dependent formula is employed for mealybug population. The solutions and the stability of the system are considered. The steady age distributions and their bifurcation diagrams are presented. Finally, the threshold of the rate of released green lacewings for mealybug extermination is investigated.

Safescape is a Western Australian company that has recently developed a device for improved safety in open-pit mines. Serious accidents can occur when large trucks veer off the roads running around the edge of the mine. The conventional technique to mitigate the risk is to pile waste rock to form a so-called bund on the edge of the road. This method is not fail safe though as vehicles can, and do, drive completely over the bund. In this paper, we describe a new device that consists of a row of filled polyethylene shell units which are linked together and sit on the road side of the rock bund. The vertical front face of the edge protector prevents out of control dump trucks from climbing over the bund and into the pit, so that they push against the barriers and heave the broken rock behind the bund. The models developed here suggest that the primary resistance to an impacting truck is provided by the large heaving force with the barrier simply facilitating this process. The theory indicates that the total resistance is independent of truck speed, meaning that simple barrier pushing experiments are sufficient to validate the analysis. The conclusions of the theory and field tests suggest that in a worst-case scenario involving the normal impact of a 500 tonne filled dump truck, the barriers and bund move a few metres before coming to rest.

Semi-analytical solutions are derived for the Brusselator system in one- and two-dimensional domains. The Galerkin method is processed to approximate the governing partial differential equations via a system of ordinary differential equations. Both steady-state concentrations and transient solutions are obtained. Semi-analytical results for the stability of the model are presented for the identified critical parameter value at which a Hopf bifurcation occurs. The impact of the diffusion coefficients on the system is also considered. The results show that diffusion acts to stabilize the systems better than the equivalent nondiffusive systems with the increasing critical value of the Hopf bifurcation. Comparison between the semi-analytical and numerical solutions shows an excellent agreement with the steady-state transient solutions and the parameter values at which the Hopf bifurcations occur. Examples of stable and unstable limit cycles are given, and Hopf bifurcation points are shown to confirm the results previously calculated in the Hopf bifurcation map. The usefulness and accuracy of the semi-analytical results are confirmed by comparison with the numerical solutions of partial differential equations.

Macroscale “continuum” level predictions are made by a new way to construct computationally efficient “wrappers” around fine-scale, microscopic, detailed descriptions of dynamical systems, such as molecular dynamics. It is often significantly easier to code a microscale simulator with periodicity: so the challenge addressed here is to develop a scheme that uses only a given periodic microscale simulator; specifically, one for atomistic dynamics. Numerical simulations show that applying a suitable proportional controller within “action regions” of a patch of atomistic simulation effectively predicts the macroscale transport of heat. Theoretical analysis establishes that such an approach will generally be effective and efficient, and also determines good values for the strength of the proportional controller. This work has the potential to empower systematic analysis and understanding at a macroscopic system level when only a given microscale simulator is available.

Microscale propulsion is integral to numerous biomedical systems, including biofilm formation and human reproduction, where the surrounding fluids comprise suspensions of polymers. These polymers endow the fluid with non-Newtonian rheological properties, such as shear-thinning and viscoelasticity. Thus, the complex dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids present numerous modelling challenges. Here, we demonstrate that neglecting ‘out-of-plane’ effects during swimming through a shear-thinning fluid results in a significant overestimate of fluid viscosity around the undulatory swimmer Caenorhabditis elegans. This miscalculation of viscosity corresponds with an overestimate of the power the swimmer expends, a key biophysical quantity important for understanding the internal mechanics of the swimmer. As experimental flow-tracking techniques improve, accurate experimental estimates of power consumption in similar undulatory systems, such as the planar beating of human sperm through cervical mucus, will be required to probe the interaction between internal power generation, fluid rheology, and the resulting waveform.

Understanding how seasonal patterns change from year to year is important for the management of infectious disease epidemics. Here, we present a mathematical formalization of the application of complex demodulation, which has previously only been applied in an exploratory manner in the context of infectious diseases. This method extracts the changing amplitude and phase from seasonal data, allowing comparisons between the size and timing of yearly epidemics. We first validate the method using synthetic data that displays the key features of epidemic data. In particular, we analyse both annual and biennial synthetic data, and explore the effect of delayed epidemics on the extracted amplitude and phase. We then demonstrate the usefulness of complex demodulation using national notification data for influenza in Australia. This method clearly highlights the higher number of notifications and the early peak of the influenza pandemic in 2009. We also identify that epidemics that peaked later than usual generally followed larger epidemics and involved fewer overall notifications. Our analysis establishes a role for complex demodulation in the study of seasonal epidemiological events.

There are many fluid flow problems involving geometries for which a nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinate system may be the most suitable. To the authors’ knowledge, the Navier–Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid formulated in terms of an arbitrary nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinate system have not been given explicitly in the literature in the simplified form obtained herein. The specific novelty in the equations derived here is the use of the general Laplacian in arbitrary nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinates and the simplification arising from a Ricci identity for Christoffel symbols of the second kind for flat space. Evidently, however, the derived equations must be consistent with the various general forms given previously by others. The general equations derived here admit the well-known formulae for cylindrical and spherical polars, and for the purposes of illustration, the procedure is presented for spherical polar coordinates. Further, the procedure is illustrated for a nonorthogonal helical coordinate system. For a slow flow for which the inertial terms may be neglected, we give the harmonic equation for the pressure function, and the corresponding equation if the inertial effects are included. We also note the general stress boundary conditions for a free surface with surface tension. For completeness, the equations for a compressible flow are derived in an appendix.

A numerical comparison of the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and the finite-difference method for pricing European options under a regime-switching framework is presented in this paper. We consider pricing options on stocks having two to four volatility regimes. Numerical results show that the MC simulation outperforms the Crank–Nicolson (CN) finite-difference method in both the low-frequency case and the high-frequency case. Even though both methods have linear growth, as the number of regimes increases, the computational time of CN grows much faster than that of MC. In addition, for the two-state case, we propose a much faster simulation algorithm whose computational time is almost independent of the switching frequency. We also investigate the performances of two variance-reduction techniques: antithetic variates and control variates, to further improve the efficiency of the simulation.

An initial-boundary value problem for a time-fractional diffusion equation is discretized in space, using continuous piecewise-linear finite elements on a domain with a re-entrant corner. Known error bounds for the case of a convex domain break down, because the associated Poisson equation is no longer $H^{2}$-regular. In particular, the method is no longer second-order accurate if quasi-uniform triangulations are used. We prove that a suitable local mesh refinement about the re-entrant corner restores second-order convergence. In this way, we generalize known results for the classical heat equation.

Some swimming microorganisms are sensitive to light, and this can affect the way in which they negotiate their environment. In particular, photophobic cells are repelled from unfavourable light conditions, and in a quiescent fluid environment this can be observed as elevated cell levels in regions away from these light conditions. This photoresponsive effect is of interest due to its potential technological applications. For example, the use of light to focus and direct cells could be used as a convenient means to separate out the algae used in biofuel production (for example, hydrogen), or exploited within devices for biodetection of environmental contaminants. However, in these types of situations the swimming cells will usually be suspended in a flow with shear. In this environment, it has previously been shown that cells can become hydrodynamically trapped in regions of high fluid shear, and so the extent to which photofocusing can occur under these conditions is not immediately clear. Moreover, in applications where the light must pass through appreciable volumes of the suspension, cells will typically absorb light and so shade each other from the illumination. As such, the intensity at any point in the flow is dependent upon the global cell concentration. Hence, in this study we model the coupled influence of fluid shear and cell photosensitivity on a suspension of swimming microorganisms, and ask under what circumstances a suspension of photophobic cells might be focused into high concentration regions.

Pricing variance swaps have become a popular subject recently, and most research of this type come under Heston’s two-factor model. This paper is an extension of some recent research which used the dimension-reduction technique based on the Heston model. A new closed-form pricing formula focusing on a log-return variance swap is presented here, under the assumption that the underlying asset prices can be described by a mean-reverting Gaussian volatility model (Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process). Numerical tests in two respects using the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation are included. Moreover, we discuss a procedure of solving a quadratic differential equation with one variable. Our method can avoid the previously encountered limitations, but requires more time for calculation than other recent analytical discrete models.

We study bound states in weakly deformed and heterogeneous waveguides, and compare analytical predictions using a recently developed perturbative method with precise numerical results for three different configurations: a homogeneous asymmetric waveguide, a heterogenous asymmetric waveguide and a homogeneous broken strip. We have found excellent agreement between the analytical and numerical results in all the examples; this provides a numerical verification of the analytical approach.

The immersed boundary method is a widely used mixed Eulerian/Lagrangian framework for simulating the motion of elastic structures immersed in viscous fluids. In this work, we consider a poroelastic immersed boundary method in which a fluid permeates a porous, elastic structure of negligible volume fraction, and extend this method to include stress relaxation of the material. The porous viscoelastic method presented here is validated for a prescribed oscillatory shear and for an expansion driven by the motion at the boundary of a circular material by comparing numerical solutions to an analytical solution of the Maxwell model for viscoelasticity. Finally, an application of the modelling framework to cell biology is provided: passage of a cell through a microfluidic channel. We demonstrate that the rheology of the cell cytoplasm is important for capturing the transit time through a narrow channel in the presence of a pressure drop in the extracellular fluid.

We study the numerical Adomian decomposition method for the pricing of European options under the well-known Black–Scholes model. However, because of the nondifferentiability of the pay-off function for such options, applying the Adomian decomposition method to the Black–Scholes model is not straightforward. Previous works on this assume that the pay-off function is differentiable or is approximated by a continuous estimation. Upon showing that these approximations lead to incorrect results, we provide a proper approach, in which the singular point is relocated to infinity through a coordinate transformation. Further, we show that our technique can be extended to pricing digital options and European options under the Vasicek interest rate model, in both of which the pay-off functions are singular. Numerical results show that our approach overcomes the difficulty of directly dealing with the singularity within the Adomian decomposition method and gives very accurate results.
