Fifty one years have passed since gross and Crafoord independently reported successful repair of aortic coarctation. One could be forgiven for assuming that all the surgical controversies have now been settled. This is far from the case, as the numerous publications (frequently with opposing view points) related to timing, technique and complications bear testament. Perhaps the passage of the golden anniversary of this operation should stimulate a degree of reflection among surgeons and cardiologists.
