Special Euroclay2023 issue
Clay Minerals, journal of the European Clay Groups, will host a special issue of papers from EUROCLAY2023. All presenters of accepted abstracts are invited to submit an article to the journal as part of this special issue. Authors submitting their article through the Clay Minerals submission system should select the special issue ‘Euroclay2023’.
This special issue will be open for submissions from 25 July 2023 until 31 January 2024.
Clays in Construction – the role of clay mineralogy in tomorrow’s built environment
Clay-based resources have been used in construction since the earliest days of humankind. Our global society faces contemporary challenges to develop adequate infrastructure and healthy housing for all, whilst at the same time needing to decarbonise and reduce depletion of natural resources. As we seek to resolve these societal challenges in construction and materials manufacturing, new challenges and solutions arise. Clay-based resources are increasingly generated as waste streams from excavation activities such as mining and construction. There is renewed focus on how a diverse range of clay-based resources, both as primary resource streams and in waste streams, can be optimally used in a range of construction technologies.
Clay mineralogy is crucial to determining the physical and chemical attributes of clay-based resources, which then affect a variety of end properties, including rheology, compaction characteristics, chemical reactivity, hygroscopic behaviour, and more. To ensure that new approaches in construction are reliable and scalable, understanding the clay mineralogy in-depth and developing new strategies to modify clays and clay minerals are essential.
This special issue will attract the interest of researchers who investigate the influence of clay mineralogy and the modification of clays and clay minerals in a variety of construction applications. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Ceramics and masonry
- Processing of clay-based waste streams
- Activated clays in blended Portland cements
- Activated clays in non-conventional cementitious systems
- Geotechnics
- Earthen construction
- Renders, paints and coatings
Deadline for submissions: 31 October 2023
