The present paper develops a two-period, simple model of interbank competition based on the idea that banks can partially control the behaviour of borrowers. The control effort by one bank over its customers is not observable by competitor banks. It is shown that the equilibrium behaviour of banks is characterised by a distorted incentive to exert the control effort. A second implication of the model is that unexpected tightening of the interest rate policy by the Central Bank increases the banks’ liabilities and thereby influences their loan policy. It is also shown that the returns from control are lower if banks expect that the economy be hit by a negative shock.

One of the most usual claims in the debate on economic Integration is that trade liberalization and a fortiori free trade agreements are at the greater advantage of consumers of all countries. In this paper we show that this statement should be temperated if the countries differ considerably with respect to per capita income. If this is the case it can happen that only the consumers of the richest countries gain from the creation of a common market; while, in the poorest countries, the firms gain but the consumers are worse off. The analysis confirms some worries about the short run effects and the distributive problems induced by the economic integration of heterogeneous areas.

Nous analysons, à l’aide d’un modèle théorique à deux pays, si la reprise précoce de l’économie américaine implique une forte hausse des taux d’intérêt en Europe, qui mettrait en péril la reprise européenne. Nous examinons les effets des politiques monétaires, du degré de mobilité internationale du capital, de l’intensité des effets de richesse, et enfin de l’accumulation de dette extérieure aux États-Unis.

Cet article compare les différentes hypothèses d’altruisme qui ont été étudiées dans le cadre du modèle à générations imbriquées. Deux visions concurrentes de l’altruisme se côtoient. La première due à Barro [1974] est proche de l’intuition que l’on peut avoir des solidarités au sein de la famille, mais ne permet pas de garantir la neutralité de la politique budgétaire. La seconde qualifiée de ad hoc dans la mesure où elle ne vérifie plus la définition de Barro selon laquelle l’utilité d’un agent ne dépend que de son utilité de cycle de vie sensu stricto et des utilités de ses enfants (ou de ses parents) permet de retrouver le résultat escompté par Barro, mais au prix d’un retour à la logique du modèle avec agent à durée de vie infinie.

In an intertemporal model with competitive labour and product markets it is shown how nominal inertia with asymmetrical adjustment of nominal wages and prices may arise even though there are no informational asymmetries between the labour and the product markets. As a consequence, nominal shocks can have real effects. Nominal inertia is in the present setting generated by the interplay between incomplete capital markets and an inability of agents to disentangle temporary from permanent shocks.

Dans les années soixante, l’étude de la stabilité, lorsque les échanges ont lieu en dehors de l’équilibre (Hahn-Negishi), a été par la suite utilement complétée par la prise en compte de la monnaie (Arrow-Hahn). Cependant, son introduction dans le modèle, à partir d’une contrainte de transaction monétaire associée à une offre de monnaie exogène et en quantité donnée, n’est pas entièrement convaincante. En particulier, elle ne permet pas l’examen des conséquences possibles de l’endettement des ménages sur la stabilité de l’équilibre. C’est cette question que nous avons étudiée, en adjoignant une monnaie interne aux dotations initiales en biens des agents. A partir d’un modèle de non-tâtonnement, nous montrons que la quasi-stabilité et la stabilité globale sont soumises dans ce cas à des conditions plus restrictives. La convergence du processus d’échanges vers une ou plusieurs valeurs d’adhérence suppose en effet qu’une règle précise relative à l’émission de monnaie ou à la détermination du taux d’intérêt débiteur soit appliquée. Quant à l’unicité des allocations optimales, elle ne peut être vérifiée que dans la mesure où la monnaie créée pendant le processus de convergence est entièrement détruite au moment où l’équilibre concurrentiel est atteint.

L’article analyse la coopération monétaire en Europe comme une coalition (au sens de la théorie des jeux) au sein de l’économie mondiale. Le modèle de Canzoneri et Henderson sert de point de départ; il est enrichi, notamment par la prise en compte d’une fonction de création de la monnaie internationale, pour répondre à trois questions: La coordination des politiques monétaires européennes contribuera-t-elle à améliorer l’équilibre mondial, spécialement du point de vue de l’emploi? Quelles implications associer au refus d’accorder à l’objectif d’emploi une place explicite dans la formulation de la politique monétaire européenne conformément au traité de Maastricht? Quelles implications associer à la promotion de l’euro comme une monnaie internationale concurrente du dollar?

This paper uses a dynamic general equilibrium setup with overlapping generations to provide a better understanding of the causes and consequences of credit constraints resulting from asymmetric information and moral hazard. These constraints imply that the entrepreneur’s access to credit is limited by the amount of internal funds available. In a general equilibrium setup, internal funds and the interest rate are endogenous. It is shown that credit constraints have large effects either by redistributing wealth or by changing the equilibrium capital stock, or both. Insofar as the interest rate elasticity of savings is close to zero, the effects on income distribution are likely to be much more important than the effects on output and investment. Even though Pareto improving policies do exist, they seem extremely difficult to implement in practice. Even in our simple setup with no borrower heterogeneity, simple transfers from unconstrained households to finance-constrained entrepreneurs may well fail to lead to Pareto superior outcomes and to eliminate the inefficiencies generated by capital market imperfections, even though they would have a positive impact on aggregate investment and output.

Dans ce travail, j’introduis une asymétrie d’information dans un modèle d’équilibre général caractérisé par l’incertitude et l’existence d’un système incomplet de marchés financiers. Un concept d’équilibre à anticipations rationnelles est associé à ce modèle à 1 bien et S états de nature et l’on montre qu’il existe une classe générique d’économies pour lesquelles le prix d’équilibre sur les marchés financiers est parfaitement révélateur des asymétries d’information. De ce point de vue, ce modèle s’inscrit dans la continuité de la contribution de Radner [1968] tout en exploitant les développements récents de la théorie des marchés incomplets.

This paper analyses unilateral trade liberalisation in a Cournot duopoly model where the domestic and the foreign firm have different marginal costs. There are three results in the paper. Firstly, with linear demand, it is shown that the domestic country will lose as a result of unilateral free trade unless the foreign firm has a significant cost advantage. Secondly, it is shown that a sufficient condition for there to be gains from unilateral free trade is that the domestic firm is so uncompetitive that it ceases production under free trade. This result is generalised to the case of a Cournot oligopoly with non-linear demand. Thirdly, it is shown that there will always be gains from unilateral free trade with constant elasticity demand functions whatever the elasticity of demand or the relative costs of the domestic and foreign firms.

We construct in this paper a “benchmark” model of fluctuations withoptimizing households and firms. The economy is a monetary one, withimperfect competition in goods and labor markets, as well as increasingreturns to scale and specialization. This economy is subject totechnological and monetary shocks. Analytical solutions are derived, whichallow to understand the respective roles of imperfect competition andincreasing returns in generating underemployment of resources and potentialpersistence effects.

The objective of this article is to evaluate quantitative implications of the hypothesis of matching, with endogenous participation, in the framework of a real cycle model. The choice of participation results from a trade off between domestic production and search for a job. Thus, fluctuations of the unemployment summarise the flows in and out of the labour force. Moreover, in this model, unemployment fluctuations are not Pareto optimal as in Andolfatto [1966] and Merz [1995]. Results of the simulations show how it is possible to explain some stylised facts of the American labour market when flows on this market are so clarified.

Answers of sample survey respondents to questions like the following one: “In the circumstances of your household, what income would you regard as the minimum (or good/bad/sufficient, etc.) for your household?” can be used to estimate equivalence scales. It is sometimes claimed that this is a simple and cheap method to obtain “true” equivalence scales. Typically, these scales are much flatter than those derived from consumption behaviour data, or those incorporated in official poverty lines. A number of possible reasons have been advanced for this result. Yet, using subjective data does not necessarily result in a flat equivalence scale. Equivalence scales can also be estimated from answers to direct survey questions on how satisfied the respondent is with his or her household income, and these scales are often quite steep. In this paper, an application of both methods is reported. A number of possible reasons for the discrepancy are explored. In particular, the effects of a wide range of exogenous variables are examined. Data are from the 1985 and 1988 waves of the Belgian Socio-Economic Panel, a household income survey. The conclusion is that the discrepancy between the equivalence scales persists, even when controlling for a large number of possibly intervening factors.

En dépit de ses enjeux, la mobilité géographique des étudiants de l’enseignement supérieur reste un champ empirique relativement peu exploré. La question investie par la recherche concerne ici principalement le rôle du revenu dans le processus de mobilité. Les choix des localisations sont appréhendés dans la double perspective de mobilité de formation et de mobilité d’emploi. Un processus de double sélection combiné avec une fonction de gains permet d’analyser les relations entre les deux types de mobilité et d’étudier le statut des différentiels de revenus constatés. Le modèle est testé sur la population étudiante de l’enseignement supérieur français durant la période 1984–1987, à partir des données individuelles tirées d’une enquête nationale de cheminement réalisée par le Centre d’Etude et de Recherche sur l’Emploi et la Qualification.

The ability of fiscal policies to smooth macroeconomic fluctuations under the constraints imposed by the Maastricht Treaty is at the heart of the current policy debate in Europe. A two-country intertemporal stochastic general equilibrium model is used in order to evaluate the efficiency of fiscal policy. First, it reveals the importance of the nature of the shocks hitting European countries : asymmetrical shocks actually strengthen the national fluctuations. Then, constraints on public deficit imposed by the Maastricht Treaty limit the ability of national governements to stabilize their économies. Furthermore, they can lead the european countries to adopt pro-cyclical budget rules.

This paper studies the dynamic properties of the labour demand model with non convex adjustment costs proposed by Bentolila and Bertola [1990]. With this model we evaluate the importance of the firing costs, following a great shock, for the dynamics of adjustment of the aggregated labour demand of a stationary state to an other. The model is calibrated on the French economy, and studies the transition following the shock of 1973-74,–i.e. a shock on the price of oil as well as the transition from a rapid and stable growth to a slow and uncertain one. We show that in this case, a drastic reduction of the firing costs when the shock occurs does not allow to modify substantially the path of the economy.
